I tried mixing archons with zealots, but that did not work out because my enemy made guardians, which shredded my archons and left my zealots completely helpless.
How about dragoons? I used to hesistate to make them because I thought they took too much resources, but that was before I understood I had to have dozens and dozens of probes. How effective is a large group of dragoons?**
Generally, the best strategy is not to max out on one thing, which is something a lot of new players miss. Any one kind of unit, no matter how good, can be effectively countered. Zealots/Corsairs is a spiffy combo I've occasionally employed with considerable success. Also, you don't necessarily have to max out, another fine point of the game. Small scale can be very effective as well. A shuttle with 2 Reavers or 4 Dark Templa on top of your enemy's mining can be devastating.
If you like air units, Scouts/Carriers work fairly well. Zealots/Dragoons (or archons) doesn't work bad on the ground, but some Scouts or Corsairs to shoot down Gaurdians or Battlecruisers is a good idea.
Also, if you run into walls of Phoon Cannons surrounding a base, remember that they can be flown over by fast units like Scouts or even Shuttles in some cases.
