    • Just land on Earth, and you can be Mostly harmless. 😉

Macavenger breaks out his Scoutship and goes on a real hunting spree. First, he gets behind Hunter and laces his rear shields with laser fire and scoots away, just to show the innate superiority of the Scoutship. Then he finds a Corvette, disables it, boards it, and takes all its money. Now nearly out of Missiles but undamaged, he takes an Argosy with his 3 laser cannons, and steals it's money too. A Defender flying around is hit with a few shots, then a Missile, and explodes, after which he knocks off another Argosy. Then he goes back down to get more ammo.

BTW, I could easily do this in the real game, even with a much bigger fleet including kestrels scooting around... Scoutships rule. You try this kind of thing with a Courier in the game, you'll get toasted.

    • Insano goes in a shuttle and equips it with a neutron blaster. He destoys one ship, the shuttle blows up, then he drifts into another ship and takes over it. This process repeats, and repeats, and repeats...

      It's a matter of preference:

      Scoutship:
      Speed: 275 AU/h
      Accel: 187
      Turn: 120°/sec
      Shields: 30u
      Charge: 0.24u/sec
      Armor: 5u
      Guns: 4 (max)
      Turrets: -
      Space: 35 tons
      Cargo: 40 tons
      Fuel: 900u (9)
      Length: 18m
      Mass: 50 tons
      Crew: 2
      Cost: 80,000 cr

      Courier:
      Speed: 250 AU/h
      Accel: 155
      Turn: 120°/sec
      Shields: 15u
      Charge: 0.15u/sec
      Armor: 25u
      Guns: 2 (max)
      Turrets: 1 (max)
      Space: 30 tons
      Cargo: 50 tons
      Fuel: 800u (8)
      Length: 15 m
      Mass: 75 tons
      Crew: 10
      Cost: 180,000 cr

I prefer the Courier because of overall greater protection: 40u to the Scoutships' 35u, Plus having a Proton turret is useful. I'll take two lasers a proton turret and 40u protection to 4 lasers abd 35u any day. Not to mention the overall space: Courier: 80, Scoutship: 75. Mass expanders can make the Courier even more dangerous, though to be fair the same is true for the Scoutship. Pros for the Scoutship is 1 jump more fuel and slightly greater speed and accel, but that's not IMO going to compensate for the Courier's advantages. Even if the Courer does cost more. One final thing good about the Courier is it has a crew of 10; the Scoutship has only 2. A ship with 10 crew has a greater chance of cpautring a better ship then a ship crewed by 2 people does. There's my 2 cents. 🙂

The Hunter: semi-dangerously flying around in his Courier, looking for Pirates who are worse them him to blow up. Loyalty: Umm...I like the Feds better but I ain't enlisting!

    • However, there are a couple issues outside the numbers that you haven't considered.

First, the Scoutship has a smaller target profile. In a head to head pass with an Argosy, for example, you'll take a lot more fire in the Scoutship. Additionally, you seem to have forgotten the fact that the Scoutship's shields recharge much quicker, so it's 35 is superior to the Courier's 40. Also, Missiles do much more damage to Armor than Shields, so they'll take down a Courier faster than a Scoutship.

The Scoutship is faster and more manuverable, and with the performance upgrades flies like a fighter.

The turret slot on the Courier is, IMHO, mostly useless. I've found that one turret doesn't make a significant difference, you need at least 2. By contrast, the 3 Lasers I usually put on my Scout do a lot of damage.

Finally, if you think your Courier is so hot, go hunt down and disable a Corvette in it. I love to see Pirate Corvettes in my Scoutship, because I know that's just another 100,000 or so toward a Corvette of my own. Good luck, you'll need it.

The general opinion around the boards is that Couriers are ok if you're going to be doing Cargo missions around the Core Worlds, but if you're seeing any significant combat, you want a Scoutship. A few disagree, but not many.

Come on, I'm just trying to get him to accept "Try it, you'll like it!" That's all. I'm not trying to convince him the universe is a figment of his imagination or anything. This is really minor on the scale of me arguing. 😉

Either that means that you'll get hit more in a Scoutship, or I didn't quite get that.

But once you get past the Scoutship's Shields it's probably dead, where as with the Courier, that's not the case.

Also, Missiles do much more damage to Armor than Shields, so they'll take down a Courier faster than a Scoutship.

      See my last comment.

I never claimed that the Scoutship wasn't faster and more manuverable. This is understandable since it's built to hold less cargo.

I think that my two lasers and a proton turret (isn't it nice not have to aim it) outgun your three lasers. IMO.

It helps that you're probably 5 times the pilot I am as well. Since I've beenn playing EV for only about 15 days. 🙂 Anyway, I believe the Courier is good enough to idsable a Corvette, but I'm going to have to improve my combat skills before I can do it myself. For now I'l prey on Pirate Clippers and Argosies while I pretend to be a non-violent trader. 😄

My belief is that the Courier is a better combat ship that most people think,(and it's an excellent trading ship) and besides, it's a nice stepping stone so I can get the Corvette on the other side of the river.

      The Defense rests.

The shields on a scout will take much longer to break through, however. Also, one word: Armaplast.

I find the difference between a 40 and 50 tons to be inconsequential. Besides, if I want to do some major hauling, I'll hire some Light Freighter escorts, which my Scoutship will be much more capable of defending.

      a) You have to aim the lasers anyway. 😛
🆒 One turret isn't enough to seriously hurt any ship that it will track effectively. Turrets don't aim at fighters well, and one turret won't do a lot to a capital ship. I bet a lot of your shots from that thing miss.

Actually, the way I take Corvettes has far more to do with my ship and how I upgrade it than piloting skill. Unless everyone else is lying, I'm far from the best pilot around these boards.

After boarding 2 more Argosies, he goes down and switches weapons, then goes up hunting the remaining Pepsi Cruisers. Their weapons can't penetrate his Sprite shields, but his DP torpedoes rapidly level Pepsi Cruisers, demonstrating the innate superiority of Coke over Roach Juice.

No, I'm not. 😛 Seriously, just give it a try, you can make the Scoutship into such a cool fighter if you try.

Macavenger continues dogfighting the Pepsi fleet in his Scoutship. However, since his shields are impenetrable to them, and his bombs go straight through their shields and blow their ships away, they quickly decide to leave. Mac looks for more pirates, but Captain Skyblade has cleared all of them out by this time. The bar has been saved.
