    • Creative Monsters


      The time has come to start a discussion where people can list some of the enemies/monsters in their games(the creative ones, no one wants to hear about the damn zombies).
      To start this off I'll talk about the Shasharii.

      The Shasharii are a humanoid race with pale skin, thin bodies, no hair, and long arms. They have no mouths, no nose except for 2 nostrils, and large dark eyes. Colorful lines and sigils adorn their bodies, and their flowing robes are often white or gray. Shasharii are powerful mages, but choose their battles and will not always attack you. They are a civilized race, and can be found in the city of Gilthash, which is also the city of Halflings, Zhent, and occasionally the nomadic Desert Elves.
      When Shasharii do decide to attack you, it is usually wise to carry a rod of magic draining, which will cancel most of their spells. The Shasharii can be transformed into the deadly Vampire by merging minds with an Elf, which is a rare occurence, and thus the healthy lack of Vampires along the Dusk Coast.

    • well..my characters are going to be simple..there is the noble race of the Sairian Desert people THEY are half-elvish people.(Note that the Land is split into 2 areas..Forest&Grass...Desert;&wastland;)

      the Evil Doom Knights of Tenniuga a Evil Town..The doom knights have A heavy armor and are covered in a black Robe..Often Aggresive...The Goblins Of the West are a small yet powerful people who are just trying to get by..Legend has it that they are forvever greatful for resuing one of there own.....The Orcs are actually split into 2 Races the Northern and Southern Orcs..The Northern are a evil Group and often have wars with the Southerns..The Southerns are Good and Kind Orcs who just want peace for all..WELL thats it for now..OH and there will be stuff like "Northern Mage Orc" etc someting,like that 🙂 🙂 🙂

      oh and by the by her's some more info:
      they exhale blue flame from their nostrils (plasma)
      has more of a pale green tint with a tough hide
      they live in a cold montainous region
      look kind of like goblins...I guess
      only fight you one on one and have varying ai, skills,and weapons
      generally you'll only encounter (oops those don't exist anymore,see the log) them in the mountain region.

    • Giant monsters scare the crap out of me in games, 'specially if they feel the need to shoot plasma from their nose.

      The main character in my game will be named Shakwan and is a tribal warrior from the north. After his home is annihilated he finds his way south to the Realm of Phaedrus. Thats about all I want to reveal today.

    • The Hagor is a primitive human race, Hunters and gatherers. They do not hesitate to use any form of nourishment, including enemy humans. Although the Hagor haven't developed any form of writing yet, there religion is very sophisticated. The infamous Ritual of Grinsile is preformed once a year. Normally no match for your weapons, during this time the priests become inhabited by demons, and posses extraordinary powers. Watch out.

    • Okedokey. I haven't worked out specifics for attributes on any of the stuff in my game yet, but I can give a general overview of one high-end baddie you will have to deal with.

      Gellot (singular and plural -- and that's a soft T at the end there): One of the most feared and respected groups of Mages in the whole of the Hussian Millitary. They do not opperate under any command other than the express wishes of The Lord Of The Plains* Himself or one directly under His command. When they are issued the command to attack though, may that person or place go to the next life with good graces and a smile from the Gods.

      Gellots are rarely used though, as they are a self-expiring resource. Meaning: they die in the proccess of using their power. They build up incredible levels of energy very quickly, then slowly begin to expell it from their bodies. The energy, as directed by intense concentration, forms an alter-image of themselves. This image projected by their mind becomes a manifestation of their idealized form -- a creature built purely to serve as a weapon.

      This manifestation can take on any of several forms depending on the will of the Gellot creating it: from a poweful magic wielder beyond comprehension; to a beast of unimaginable strength, able to tear apart raught iron with its bare hands; to other, worse things. There is no way to prepare for battle with a Gellot other than to kiss your loved ones goodbye. Although they are perfectly fragile in their pre-casting form, they become otherwise very quickly. Speed of action is possibly the only weapon that can kill them.

      Unfortunately, the act of creating this alter-image requires that the Gellot expire not only his built up supply of energy, but also every ounce of energy that holds his being together. Although no one has ever lived to tell of the experiance, observers describe the proccess as looking "quite painful." Still, although it is a career with only one clear end, there is no shortage of magi trying to attain this highest honor -- the honor to die in battle for He That Walks The Plains.

      *at the time of the game He is Mourin Al-Hussin XIV -- and He is always capitalized to show the humility of those addressing him

    • Ok here's a named monster from my game:

      Terazadiminnyt'ror is the frightening opponent of many great heroes of myth and legend. The Dread Dragon is easily half the size of the "golden" city of Tenova, and is a deep black in hue. The Dragon is believed to have been slain by Tior De'Rodan, the famous Desert Elf, centuries ago.
      Dragons, however, can only be truly killed by the power of a god(dragons are considered DemiGods), and unfortunatly Tior De'Rodan was not a god. The Dulasine(Elven Senate) has determined that when a dragon is wounded to the point of near death by a mortal it will "pretend" to die, where it enters a form of hibernation and will not awake unless certain conditions are met(like a world wide war, a special sacrifice, etc). Thus the Dulasine have concluded that Terazadiminnyt'ror is not truly dead, but "sleeping" along with all the other dragons, if indeed they ever did exist. If Terazadiminnyt'ror ever awakens, it is most likely that he will head straight for the tomb of Tior De'Rodan, and destroy all in his path.

      Terazadiminnyt'ror was a Dread Dragon, and thus obsessed with killing, so it is fairly safe to assume that a large amount of people would have to die at once for him to awaken.

      The types of Dragons are: Dread-violent and evil Spirit-undead, evil or neutral
      Green-evil, greedy Archaia-most powerful, generally good, although sometimes evil These are the only types of dragons included in myth an legend.

    • Monsters, you say? Well here is one from me.

      Wampere (wham-peer)
      One of the Elder races along side the elves, the Wampere are not to be trifled with. Unlike the vampires of modern myth, the Wampere do not drink the blood of their victims, instead they consume the soul. Most Wampere require that the prey's flesh be cut in order to draw the soul out of the body, while the most powerfull only need to touch the victim to consume their soul. Wampere are generally discribed as having a rather elven apearance, side from their completely black, pupiless eyes and sharp teeth. Wampere also gain certain gifts from absorbing another's soul. They gain the physical and magical abilities of the victim, and they can take on their physical apearance.

      Pretty cool, huh?

    • Zhenth are by far the rarest "creatures" in my game, as there are only about 3. Zhenth were once human, dwarf, elven, halfling, or gnome, but committed grave crimes centuries ago. An incredibly talented and powerful mage would lay a curse on them, that constantly destroys them. The only way to counteract this curse is with the extinction of the race the Zhenth was originally(this may seem like encouragement for more violence, but the Zhenth were only given a couple years at most to live, and every curse has a countercurse, the more powerful the spell the more powerful the means to remove it). The mage Rothe the Wise was the only mage capable of casting this powerful enchantment, and he used it on 3 people who had attempted to awaken ancient forces, and give themselves absolute power. The three were Zsissaj the only mage close to rivalling Rothe's power, Ratiras who was once a ruling member of the Elven Senate Dulasine, and Hytasha who was a powerful wizard, corrupted by Zsissaj. After the curse was placed on each of them they were imprisoned far beneath the earth in a system of ancient catacombs. Centuries have passed, and it is assumed the three are dead, as the curse only requires a couple years to run its course. The locations of the catacombs have long since been forgotten.
      Zhenth appear almost exactly like they did before the curse, except their eyes are a hollow white, and strange thin lines run along their flesh.

      A random smattering of enemies:

      Goblin Highwaymen: Everyone knows the natural prey of the Goblin is money. Usually this means that the worse they'll do to you is offer you soulviniers at outrageous prices, or maybe set up a tourist trap, but several desperate Goblins hunt money in more... terminal... ways. Thus come the Goblin Highwaymen. They trivel along the roads of the Midlands, the Northlands, the Southlands, indeed, anywhere where there are Goblins (ie, everywhere), and wait for unwary and/or wary travellers to pass. Then they charge out from their hiding places. They aren't very good fighters, and since only the most poor Goblins would opt for this career path, they aren't too well equiped. But there's a lot of 'em. Many a Goblin has lost his fortune in the Goblin Stock Market, and been forced to prey off of others to survive.

      City Guard: Most cities have guards. They don't bother you if you don't kill any body. They may offer you a job, but if that's the case they'll cease to be City Guards and become _____ the City Guard. Most cities in the Midlands have a motely collection of men, women, Elves, Goblins and anything else that may be living in the area (but not Orcs or Dwarves... they face heavy discrimination. No one knows why), with a higher proportion of humans as you get futher north or south.

      Goblin Terrorists: The Goblin Highwaymen have a reason hurt others. They need money, or they'll starve and freeze and, in the Iltmir River Valley, drown. The Goblin Terrorists, on the other hand, have simply gone off the deep end. They're usually quite rich, and thus better equipped than the Highwaymen, usually carrying weapons using Gunpowder, making them fighters to be reckoned with. Fortunately, they are really rare, and tend to explode spectacularly when their guns malfunction.

      The Gronk: Gronk! Gronk! Gronk!

      The player can be a Goblin, human or Elf. I COULD let them be a Dwarf or Orc, but because of differing attitudes about Dwarves and Orcs as opposed to the more mainstream humans, Goblins and Elves, I'd probably have to make two different versions of the game 😉

    • I have a race of humans (or maybe elves it could be either) who are at extreme peace with nature and the forest. In their native lands (err those need a name) they are almost impossible to see unless they want to be seen. Also, they are extremely skilled at using Earth magic but not very good at other magic. They are called the People of the Woods when translated from the tongue they use for religous puposes.

    • Gargants: Large(13 ft tall with horns) beasts that represent a cross breed of desert scarab, and an Orc. These brutish beasts roam the arid lands, attacking all that stray too near their dens. Gargants have venom stored in their claws, which when released into a victim, can cause a coma, or disease.

      Psions: Named for their psionic abilities, Psions are sophisticated Dryads with powerful magics at their disposal. They often appear as Elven women, but their shape hasbeen known to vary. Psions wield skull wands, which serve as a focus point for their mental control spells. Psions are linked to trees much like Dryads, and thus must stay in a forested area.

      Te'Mir(or sword vampire): Appearing as slightly tall humans with long silver hair(male or female), Te'Mir are actually "lost souls" or dead people, who were attempted to be resurrected but the spell somehow failed. The soul wanders the Terra, lost and confused, often killing everything that moves. Te'Mir wield "Wraith Blades" which are curved swords, thin and long. With these blades, the Te'Mir drain the very soul from their victims, and are thus classified as a form of Vampire.

      One more random critter:

      Mountian Orcs: In the nameless world my game takes place on, very few beings are pure evil. There are criminals, despots, and other things like that, but they all have motivations, be it poverty, greed, overzealousness, a curse, misunderstanding, whatever. Then there's the Mountain Orcs. It would be nice to say that they were normal Orcs, cursed by a cruel sorcerer to be twisted monsters (even by Orcish Standards) and have an eternal hunger for the flesh of sentient beings. This is half true. There is a curse, but the Mountain Orcs don't really mind. They like what they are. They see themselves as the perfect warriors. The last time a major mountain orc invasion took place was over five hundred years ago, when they swept through the Midland kingdom of Macharia, slaughtering entire armies before finally broken at the Siege of Hillport, when they were beaten back by a desperate army of civillians (this is the origin of the Macharian tradition of the Citizen Guard), and the Mountain Orcs fled back up to the mountains of the Northlands. They haven't been seen since. But every so often, a Samurai from the Northlands nations disappears while patrolling the mountains, every so often a Goblin Investor's winter cottage is found ransacked with no trace of it's inhabitants.

      ...You seem to be implying that having "powers, abilities, and/or descriptions" that also appear in other RPGs is "unoriginal." Certainly, slavishly imitating another RPG is unoriginal, but there's a limit to how original you can be. If you apply your rule strictly, anything which casts spells, breathes fire, can turn invisible, calls itself an "Orc" or "Goblin" (this was the first I've heard "Goblins grow from spores" - unless that's from some RPG I'm not familiar with, it's certainly original), shapechanges in any way, or even just wears black is "unoriginal." I see the point you're trying to make, though.

      Personally, I think about the "coolest" thing to do with any part of a story (characters, plotlines, creatures, magic items, whatever) is to take something old and familiar, and use it in a new way. An example which I don't mind sharing (gotta have some secrets, after all!): Consider the extinct moa of New Zealand. (If you're not familiar with it, imagine a 13-foot tall emu/dinobird.) From the accounts I've read, they could be quite dangerous if cornered (their kicks would be rather vicious), but they were eventually hunted to extinction for their meat.

      That's the "familiar" part. Now some new ideas:

      1. What if a forest-dwelling culture had domesticated the moa? Can you imagine swarms of moa-riding raiders bearing down on your merchant caravan, the heads of the riders as high as the tops of your wagons?

      2. What if a nasty life-wizard got his hands on a moa? Made his pet bigger, nastier, smarter, flesh-eating?

      3. What if moas hunted in packs like wolves?

      Do you begin to get the idea? 🙂 Take something from your everyday experience, from a book you've read, from a game you've played... and look at it in a different way. That's what originality is all about. 🙂
