yes, I've seen plenty of Director games/promotional interactives made along the lines you're talking about (and I've worked on a few as well). but I've still never seen an adventure or role playing game of any real size made for shockwave. as was put by Ernest Rutherford (or maybe it was one of his antagonists -- I can't remember which...); "The best proof that something cannot happen is that it never has."

of course, video games aren't exactly nuclear physics. 🙂

but anyway: we're in agreement that CS is a better tool for this purpose, so I'm not really sure why I'm arguing with you... oh well. such is life on these boards.

Neither have I yet, but I have my hopes. Have you seen this site:
      (url="http://"http://www.dualtype.com")http://www.dualtype.com(/url)

These two guys are attempting to do just that. Of course, the finished game will be a Director projector (downloadable), not shockwave (playable over the web). They've made some progress, as the tile editor has been completed and the scripting engine is in production. Unfortunately, they got sidetracked by the UDevGame competition. I still would like to see if their Director RPG ever pans out.

    • Hell, 100%! I can't do (*$& for graphics, so if the original character sets are to be limited, then I'll have to partner up with a graphics guy. Hell, Star Wars CS woul be extremely fun to play. 🙂

I don't think Shockwave is meant for such things, BUT, have you seen (url="http://"http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=8653&db;=mac") Weird Al's Great Adventure (/url)? Not that I'm saying it's good or anything, but it was made in Director...

    • 100% reliant to be honest I'm just hoping that graphics library is good. And big. Really I suppose everyone who relies on these graphics are going to be limited in how far their games can go.

Not if they know how to "edit". Maybe just use the included graphics as a starting point, and learn how to make good computer game art from there.. It will take a while, but no one said it wouldn't. Or can't we edit the included art?

I betcha almost anything (in other words, nothing I wouldn't be willing to part with 😛 ) that you can edit the included art.

    • Editing? Yeah I guess I could do that, I'm pretty good at photoshop, just completely inexperienced at 3d stuff, I've never really even tried it and don't have the software. Still just editing might not be good enough to make the game truly individual. God I'd love to see some samples of the graphics provided. In fact maybe some one will put some library material on the imageboard.

    • An artist! My -er- iMac for an artist! From reading the boards, I guess everyone knows that getting an artist here to do the dirty work is as impossible as keeping Microsoft's IIS secure. So, methinks I shall be using 100% of CGE's graphics library for the moment.

Maybe I'll just do a short intro game, kind of like a demo, then put it up on the web. Hopefully someone who can draw something better than stick figures would like the concept and do some artwork for me. Hey, maybe Infogrames might be interested, give me $200,000 in royalty advances and I can rule the world! Muahahahaha!

Or maybe I should keep my secret plans for world domination to myself....

See, half the problem here is you guys are thinking about artists as resources to manage. While that is more akin to the big corporate game-team way of thinking, the only reason people with talent put up with that kind of mentality is the moolah.

    • I'll be doing everything! Bwhaha!
I'll be using Painter for most of my background work.... sort of a soft, watercolour like look. Similar to Legend of Mana and Saga Frontier 2. Except a tad less pastel. Alot of work with my tablet, that's for sure. 🙂
I'm doing it myself because...well, it's just nicer... you can get a very original look to the game by making the graphics yourself.

I always thought this would be a cool way to style a game.

    • 100% for me unless I get inspired, spend wads of dough on a good graphics program, and actually learn how to make graphics too.

No, no, no. You're confusing management skills with relational skills. A good manager knows that everything, even he himself is a resource, an asset, that must be utilised in the most, cost and time effective manner. Now a great manager would go up to his coworker and say, "Hey, buddy, I need your help with this. Mind spending a couple of hours helping me sort it out?" Or something to that effect

Warning to all! If you hand your team-mates vague directions like, "Just draw something like this," instead of being more specific such as, "Could you render this robot model in, oh, say a week?" expect your game to take much, much longer and less true to your vision. Us puny humans need a time frame and some framework to build upon to put things in perspective. But if you really do want to take your time to create your game, hey, go ahead.

But for those serious ones, I suggest you read some of the articles on (url="http://"http://www.gamasutra.com")www.gamasutra.com(/url) which are very insightful and relevant.

      For me, it's 99%.

I'll start with the furnished graphics.

If necessary, I'll edit them. I'm not an artist, but I can change a great deal in images to modify their feel and effect.

A very important element in a game is how it plays. Once I have that programmed with whatever graphics I have, I can then begin the (for me) work of making it look somewhat original and visually interesting.

      ...it wasn't me...

    • First off, it's incredibly difficult to find a talented artist.

What do you mean? It's easy to find a talented artist! (when you are one!)

The hard part is finding a talented artist that doesn't have something better to do! 😉

Which brings me to my point: I'll probably create a Coldstone graphics library once it comes out and I get my new PBG4. So anyway, yeah, you might see that in the future. BTW: If anyone's interested, I model terrian and objects (not characters) best.

    • Hi, my first post...
I'm relying 0% on the Coldstone graphics. I really don't like 3D graphics for RPGs. PoG is really fun and all, but I can't stand the way it looks. I'm probably gonna "go Earthbound" when I make my game, hehe 🙂

    • anywhere beetween 25 and 75% Yeah, it's a big gap, but it really depends on what kind of graphic I'm making. I'm very good at making certain kinds of graphics, but suck at other kinds(organic-like particularly). So it depends what the characters I need look like.

    • Making graphics doesn't have to be THAT hard. If you aren't good with art and don't have money, why attempt making a game with three-dimensional graphics? It'd be SO much easier going two dimensional with little sprites. It only takes a little bit of work to make the graphics look good. If you aren't very good at making little pixel based sprites, just find a set of sprites and use them as a template for your own. There's a really good web site that teaches you how to do pixel art for RPGs and other games as well. All you need is determination. Go to this website for a decent tutorial: (url="http://"http://24.70.255.173/tutorial/default.htm")http://24.70.255.173...ial/default.htm(/url)
If you still don't have enough confidence to try, then I give up.
