eh, I hesitate to reffer to anything about a magic wielding game character as "realistic." It's not like changing your oil every 3000 miles -- I doubt there's an "MP Low" light anywhere in a mage's peripheral vision. I mean, when was the last time you saw some guy on the street whip out a magic missile and then say to himself "Damn, only got 8 points left! better down this gooey blue stuff in an oddly shapped flask to top off!"
or, maybe you have seen that guy. different neighborhood, I guess...
On a more serious note: I've always liked the idea of representing "MP" as a more general characteristic like Stamina. Every time you cast a spell, it drains you mentally and physically. I mean, that's some hard work conjuring up that dragon or what have you. My theory goes that it's the same kind of energy needed to run quickly, or fight a sustained battle, or lift a big rock -- and so can be represented on the same meter.
