    • Happy 100 people. I think this is the boards longest topic! Hurray! Congrats to the man who started it all, Lorenoth.

BTW, books are a terrible terrible idea IMO. I usually won't play games where I have to read book or memorize stuff

this topic is older than the hills, but I never got around to asking Chill what slot magic was... Chill what do u mean by slot magic?
Oh and maybe we need some new views on the matter, even if the spell system is now a little more limitted.

I believe he refers to the systems used in Final Fantasy, especially VII, where you equip magic on characters, i.e. materia.

      Whoa, 105 replies?

    • Personaly I believe that spells should be memorized, but memorizing a spell is usually quick, and you can cast a spell you haven't memorized, it will just take a while to cast.

oh yeah baby!!!!! this thread is reeeeeeally old. I was at an FF8 forum, they hand a 45 page long topic called "the quiz". well I may have to start one of those here, it would be very interesting.

    • mp rockz though the idea of memorization intrigues me, mp is mmuch more realistic

      (i) The Dursleys had not changed much in the ten years that had passed, the only thing that was different was the pictures on the wall. Before, they looked like a pink beach ball wearing different colored bobble hats. (i)

    • eh, I hesitate to reffer to anything about a magic wielding game character as "realistic." It's not like changing your oil every 3000 miles -- I doubt there's an "MP Low" light anywhere in a mage's peripheral vision. I mean, when was the last time you saw some guy on the street whip out a magic missile and then say to himself "Damn, only got 8 points left! better down this gooey blue stuff in an oddly shapped flask to top off!"
or, maybe you have seen that guy. different neighborhood, I guess...

On a more serious note: I've always liked the idea of representing "MP" as a more general characteristic like Stamina. Every time you cast a spell, it drains you mentally and physically. I mean, that's some hard work conjuring up that dragon or what have you. My theory goes that it's the same kind of energy needed to run quickly, or fight a sustained battle, or lift a big rock -- and so can be represented on the same meter.

      hey, look! Posts = 111. I don't know why, but that's cool -- I'm sure of it.

In that recently posted interview with Dee, yes the one with 2 topics based on its announcement, it was stated that while the spell system would use spell points, it could be worked around to include other methods. Therefore, we don't all have to do the whole mana thing.

Note that I will never again play a game in which you have a limited number of spell casts per memorization (ahem, Baldur's Gate).

yeah I think spell points are less frustrating towards newbies(as in lower lvl characters in the game), but near the end of Baldur's Gate 2 you could have so many spells memorized that it was ridiculously easy. Spell points seem to balance things better.. and they don't just have to be for spells, they could be used for special abilites. It makes a lot more sense to use points for abilites than memorizable abilities. I don't think I need to provide yet another silly "I forgot how to cast fireball" example, which would be even more laughable in the case of special abilites. "I forgot how to jump"
