    • Next up, the Balcrusians.

      These are a race of my own design. Unless you're used to them (or are very open-minded), Balcrusians tend to unnerve humans purely by virtue of their appearance. Aggressive and somewhat quick to anger, Balcrusians average two meters tall, stalk-eyes included, have purple skin, and are armed with carnivore's teeth and taloned hands and feet.

      Their ship architecture mirrors their psychology. Their vessels tend to be weapon-shaped, and military craft of the Balcrusian People's Republic always have a blood-red bow. They focus more on speed and agility than on defenses; even the mighty Death Merchant battleships are much more maneuverable than their Galactic analogs.

      • Balcrusian Transport: The Balcruz Aerospace EP49 Light Transport is a blatant knockoff of the Argosy light freighter popular in the UGF, with one major difference. Due to stringent "public safety" regulations, it has almost no armament.

      • Balcrusian Freighter: Balcruz Aerospace built this ship using the blueprints for Kandava's 2z6 Starlight bulk freighter, which its rival took out of production in order to concentrate on a lucrative starfighter contract with the War Council. Again, due to "public safety" laws, it is practically unarmed. (That's not to say it has little room for weaponry, but you're likely to need to travel to Galactic space to arm it.)

      • Sunflash: The staple starfighter of the Balcrusian People's Navy, the small, speedy Kandava 4c4 Sunflash comes in two variants. By far the most prevalent is a drone model. Due to their low population and reproductive rate, the Balcrusians don't have enough soldiers to man their ships at Galactic or Ganba levels. Instead, they've become masters of robotics and automation, and the basic 4c4 Sunflash is an example. Less common is the 4c4M Sunflash, a manned type which is slower, but carries a little more armament and defenses.
        In groups of three or more, Sunflashes are dangerous; their speed enables them to evade point-defense fire. Singly, however, Black Knights tear them to pieces.

      • Moonblaze: The Kandava 7r9 Moonblaze fighter-bomber carries a bewildering array of weaponry, and is fast enough to give Black Knight pilots a headache, if not be a threat. Though not particularly durable -- one Balcrusian People's Navy mechanic famously complained that they need repairs after "every damned mission" -- the Moonblaze is the approximate equal of a Scallopshell heavy bomber.

      • Nemesis: The boomerang-shaped Nemesis-class frigate is far more effective in wolfpack formations than it is by itself. It's fast, well-armed, and poorly defended, but many Balcrusian admirals have mastered using them for hit-and-run strikes to soften up targets for Death Merchant attack.

      • Marauder: The granddaddy of all Balcrusian warships. The Dragon Claw - and Moonsplitter -class Marauder battleships are a kilometer and a half long, carry several squadrons of Sunflashes (though I'm going to limit it to eight), and mount an enormous fusion cannon on the bow that can rend a warship in half without warning. It takes an enormous amount of energy to fire the fusion beam, but it's one of the most devastating weapons in EVN:UGF.

      The last of the six major factions in EVN:UGF is the Chiss Ascendancy. The Chiss are highly intelligent humanoids with blue skin, blue hair, and luminescent red eyes. They evolved on the icy world of Csilla, deep in what until recently was called the Unknown Regions. Csilla is so snowy and cold, in fact, that keeping records electronically can be risky. For this reason, the Chiss capital city includes the largest publicly owned hard-copy library (e.g. books) in Known Space. The Chiss are cautious and isolationist by nature, and their sense of honor forbids preemptive strikes; they always allow their opponents to attack first.

      Once the first shot is fired, however, anything goes.

      • Chiss Transport: The Chiss variant of the light freighter is fast and has plenty of fuel capacity; the latter is a must in sparsely populated Chiss space, where inhabited systems can be few and far between. Though it doesn't come stock with many weapons, it can be easily upgraded, and its 200-ton lifting capacity makes it one of the most popular craft in the Ascendancy.

      • Chiss Bulk Freighter: The backbone of the Chiss economy, the Yad'orila -class Bulk Freighter can carry 6,000 tons of cargo in its cavernous bay. The ship's massive engines and powerful reactor leave little room for creature comforts; many private owners have converted some of the bay space into passenger quarters, turning it into a passable liner of sorts.

      • Chiss Envoy: The Envoy is a diplomatic transport used primarily by high Chiss government officials. As such, it carries quite a variety of creature comforts within its sleek hull. For example, the Crell Envoy , used by the Crell family, has a full-service restaurant, an observatory, and a library. Don't take it for a lightweight in combat, however; its twin heavy maser* turrets, Icepick missiles, and a pair of Clawcraft attack fighters suffice to keep it out of trouble.

      • Chiss Clawcraft: The Nsiss -class Clawcraft is an attack fighter that exemplifies Chiss ingenuity. It is a seamless fusion of Chiss and Galactic technologies, mating the classic spherical cockpit from Sienar's highly successful TIE fighter line with a quartet of curved arms, each of which mounts a powerful maser cannon. With two more masers underslung on the cockpit, and two Icepick missile launchers for long-range combat, the Clawcraft is a formidable fighter indeed.

      • Chiss Picket Ship: These swift frigates are normally seen in groups of three or more, patrolling the borders of Chiss space against raiders and Vagaari. Several heavy masers and shock net launchers make up their armament, and they also carry a number of squads of Chiss warriors for boarding enemy craft. They form the backbone of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force.

      • Chiss Destroyer: Like most Chiss craft, the Fiir'olong -class destroyer is designed with an eye more toward defense than offense. The vessel has thick armor, strong shields, and powerful engines, making it the perfect craft to escort Chiss battlecruisers. Its weaponry consists of four megamasers and a half-dozen heavy masers, as well as Icepick and Harpoon missiles.

      • Chiss Battlecruiser: The Thiera -class battlecruiser is one of the most powerful vessels in existence. The pinnacle of Chiss technology, it handles rather poorly. However, its graceful lines conceal an array of weapons that would make a Death Star blush: it can deploy a full squadron of Clawcraft at little to no notice, and can fill the vicinity with a hellish cloud of megamaser bolts and Harpoon missiles.

      Although they have remained fiercely aloof from the mainstream of galactic events,** the Chiss have in the past taken part in several conflicts with great effect on the course of history. During the First Yuuzhan Vong War, the Chiss (who are believed to have encountered a Yuuzhan Vong scouting force during the waning days of the Old Republic) fought as hard as anyone, and provided intelligence through their library on Csilla that helped turn the tide. More recently, the Chiss brought their considerable willpower to bear against a Vagaari chieftain who had managed to take a Galactic border planet hostage. (The admiral in charge of the task force got around the "opponent must strike first" rule by sending a small scout force to the system. The Vagaari fired on the picket ship, and the admiral took advantage of it and jumped his forces in.)

      • Maser: microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. In English, it's a laser that emits in the microwave, rather than visual, spectrum.
        ** So you know, "Galactic" with a capital 'G' refers specifically to the UGF. If "galactic" has a lower-case 'g', it refers to basically anything in Known Space.
    • Computer game stuff. Not TC stuff. And cool ship stuff. It is very interesting.

    • In addition to the six major factions -- Galactics, Protoss, Varellavites, Ganba, Balcrusians, and Chiss -- there are also a few minor factions with their own short mission strings and a set of ship classes. We'll start with the Orions.

      The Orions are a race of green-skinned, black-haired near-humans whose pupil-less white eyes see primarily in the ultraviolet spectrum. They are telepathic and empathic by default, and some evidence suggests that certain Orions have limited telekinetic powers as well.

      The first Orion to exert much influence on the course of history was a female named Varen Harsimili Yalandas, who made herself known during the United Powers War a thousand years before the start of EVN:UGF. At that time the Orions were slaves under the warlike Anz'kalarad Principalities. The Principalities attacked human space in the year -11 GSD (Galactic Standard Date) (1226 NC). They struck from the southeast of Known Space, destroying the Tekel House in the early days of the second year of the war.

      In late 1228 NC, an Orion slave, Varen Harsimili Yalandas, was rescued from a disabled Anz'kalarad destroyer by Heraani warriors. Yalandas became a warrior in her own right, taking the warrior name "KarHallarn," and quickly accumulated honor after honor, becoming the Thurokiir of Heraan in September 1229, after her predecessor Techerakh was killed leading Heraan's "home fleet" warriors against an Anz'kalarad attack force. Even with such leadership, the only reason Heraan was saved was the timely intervention of a Federation battle group under Admiral Raczak, who died in the battle.

      KarHallarn returned the favor in November when she led an elite team of Heraan warriors -- dubbed the Wolfpack -- to the Sol System, helping to repel an Anz'kalarad thrust at the heart of the Federation. She later took the Thunderforge Thor's Hammer and the Wolfpack to her homeland in the Orion Nebula, where she incited a slave revolt that took a great deal of pressure off the Auroran-Federation alliance by forcing the Anz'kalarads to split their forces, and eventually helped the alliance to win the war.

      The Orions remain very active in galactic events to the present day, where their sector of space -- the Orion League -- is an influential member government of the UGF, and holds one of the fifteen permanent seats on the Galactic High Council.

      • Orion Interceptor: The Orions have always favored speed and agility over brute force, and the Orion Martial Systems F-4 Furwin -class Interceptor is a prime example. The fighter is lightly armed, but its strength lies in its ability to outmaneuver missiles and torpedoes and other fighters. The dagger-shaped interceptors have long been the staple attack craft of the Orion League.

      • Orion Bomber: The Orion Martial Systems B-30 Ovios -class Bomber was built in recent years to fill a necessary, but as-yet empty, niche in the Orion League's starfighter forces. It lifted much of the anti-capital ship duty from the Interceptor, freeing them up to take on starfighters. The boomerang-shaped bomber can deliver quite a variety of weapons due to its modular design, but its cargo bay is quite small.

      • Orion Frigate: The Orion Martial Systems LC-25 Haladar -class Frigate was not designed with aesthetics in mind by any stretch of the imagination. However, it WAS designed to use the strategy of misdirection: as it can be easily mistaken for the Kangaroo freighter, the Haladar -class frigate is the perfect vessel for hunting pirates. It makes a show of fleeing to lure the raiders into range, then turns them to rubble with three turbolaser batteries.

      • Orion Assault Cruiser: The C-107 Orion -class Assault Cruiser is designed with close-range combat in mind, and carries few missile weapons. It relies on its brutally powerful engines and thick shields and armor to defend itself, and can unleash a devastating barrage of turbolaser fire. For long-range combat, it relies on a trio of Orion Interceptors launched from a ventral rack. Though not quite a match for the UGN's O'Brien II battlecruiser, it's quite a vessel.

      • Orion Battleship: The HC-92 Warcrad -class Battleship by far the most powerful vessel in the Orion arsenal, but the Orions departed from their usual ethic of speed when they designed it. The Warcrad -class is slow, hard to maneuver, and cantankerous, but all the same it is a vital part of the Orion League Defense Force. It carries a dozen Interceptors and four Bombers, and has the distinction of being the only vessel other than the UGN command ship that can carry Devastator -class MIRVs.*

      • MIRV is an acronym dating back to the 20th century Cold War that stands for "multiple independent reentry vehicle." The Devastator missile, the most powerful weapon in the Galactic arsenal, and so large and cumbersome that only Galactic command ships and Orion Battleships can use it effectively, carries twenty independent homing warheads that are normally tipped with a high-yield proton-compression warhead. The warheads are interchangeable as well, and can be mounted with sprayers for chemical or biological weapons as well. Using two WEAP resources, I made it so the Devastator can be used against both ships ("Devastator MIRVs" on the secondary weapons bar) and SPOBs ("Dev. MIRVs (Bombard)").

      Did you miss this topic's first post? I said there that EVN:UGF is set about a thousand years after the end of the Rebel storyline. I've got the timeline preamble (minus graphics) attached if you want to look. Technically, I suppose EVN:UGF is a Nova expansion, but it's so much further in the future that the only things remaining of the original scenario are the map and some cultural elements (for instance, the Auroran warrior culture is still strong, making Aurora Sector a major recruitment zone), so I'm calling it a TC. I'm not even keeping the Polaris -- the story there is that their region of space has been cut off from the rest of the galaxy by a temporal rift, dating back to the year 0 GSD (1237 NC).

    • Another of the UGF's important member governments is the Baticlearan Federal Republic. The Baticlearans are a subrace of humans that were genetically enhanced hundreds of years ago in order to live comfortably on the mountainous, high-gravity world of Baticlear. The government's name is actually a misnomer, as it is in fact a constitutional monarchy. The monarch (the "Bat Lord"), however, is essentially a figurehead; for all intents and purposes, the BFR is a republic.

      The BFR controls a small area of space in the southwestern Milky Way, with three principal inhabited worlds: Baticlear and Leonia in the Roland System, and Vamperia in the Corvus System. The other worlds are sparsely populated colonies that mainly produce raw materials and foodstuffs.

      • Baticlearan Arrow: The Baticlear Design Works F73 Arrow has been the staple fighter of the Baticlearans since before they joined the UGF nearly a decade ago. The ships carry only a modest load of missiles and rely on their dual lasers for attack and defense. Still, they are fast, and the price tag is impressively cheap, making them extremely popular.

      • Baticlearan Destroyer: The Baticlearans' long D8 Destroyers are quite quite often the deciding factor in any combat situation involving the Baticlearan Astro Corps. Ordinarily a vessel of this length would be awkward to maneuver, but the Baticlearans hit on an elegant solution in the form of a number of maneuvering jets located at bow and stern. The long fuselage with a saucer at one end, large wings, and the bulging main engines at the stern make it an unconventional vessel, but an effective one.

      • Baticlearan Cruiser: Baticlearan Astro Corps C7 Cruisers are built for speed and defense, and their armament is organized around missile barrages. Still, they are not entirely useless in the energy weapons department, mounting four turbolasers, several quad lasers, and a pair of ion cannons. Their primary duty consists of babysitting the giant fleet carriers that are the most powerful vessels the BAC can field.

      • Baticlearan Fleet Carrier: At six kilometers long, the Baticlear Design Works CA9 Fleet Carrier is a leviathan. Ships this size are a decided rarity, but the Baticlearan Astro Corps has fifty in orbit, and seventy on patrol, at any one time. They mount dozens of weapons and can deploy swarms of swift Arrow fighters to demolish all foes of the Bat Lord. This makes them the power hitter of the BAC.

    • Here's some of the civilian vessels in the plug:

      • Shuttle: The starter craft of EVN:UGF, the Terran Engineering Corporation C-3 Pigeon -class Cargo Shuttle is basically just an in-system ferry that has been fitted with a short-range (four jumps) hyperdrive, as well as a pair of lasers for defense. The craft is called the Pigeon -class in honor of the carrier pigeons that were used to carry messages on Earth well into the 21st century. The basic Mark I shuttle is a solid performer for its class (which doesn't mean much), and the Mark II adds a small missile launcher and additional armor.

      • Dynacross: The ThrensinCorp F-40 Dynacross isn't half bad as an interceptor; in fact at one point it was the staple craft of the United Galactic Fighter Corps. Since then it has been displaced by faster and better armed fighters -- first the Foxfire, and now the Black Knight -- but the Dynacross is still pretty popular in the defense fleets and security forces of Galactic member worlds. It's also available as a shipboard fighter.

      • Starhawk: Kuat Systems Engineering designed and built this masterpiece of a fighter craft using components from several different companies. It is built to fly aggressively and can take on craft several times its size with an impressive payload for a ship of its class. More than a thousand sectors use it as the backbone starfighter of their defense fleets. It's also available as a shipboard fighter, though the bay itself was actually built by Sienar Fleet Systems to reduce the price. (KSE products, though of very high quality, tend to be quite expensive.)

      • Argosy: CDX Starworks' classic light freighter is one of the most popular models around. Modification is made easy by its modular construction, and its range enables it to carry large cargoes quickly and safely to all corners of the galaxy. Well armed compared to competing craft like the Kangaroo, and with a much bigger hold than the YT-1300, the Argosy has been flown for generations, and is used as a fleet tender (in modified form) by the UGN.

      • Starliner: After Sigma Shipyards folded during the Depression, the company's assets were basically split down the middle between the Terran Engineering Corporation, a corporation based on a station in Martian orbit, and the enormous Kuat Drive Yards. KDY took Sigma's bestselling Echo Starliner series and combined its best points with KDY's own Krenzler-class heavy transport to make the Nebula -class Starliner. Long range, great accommodations, and good defenses are hallmarks of the Nebula -class.
        With a few tweaks to the defenses and a reduction in cargo space, it becomes a passable warship that can go into backwaters where a normal liner wouldn't dare go. It still depends primarily on speed, but the four Dynacrosses in its docking bay and its CEC quad lasers make it capable of defending itself if trapped.

      • Chevron: The Chevron is the crown jewel of the Merlin Starcraft civilian starship line. Originally designed by Maskirovka, the production line was bought up by MSC after Maskirovka filed for Chapter 11 during the Depression. Armed with quad lasers, missiles, and the famous Starhawk bay from Sienar, the Chevron is very popular among privateers and merchants.

    • Reading through all these lists of ships, I'm compelled to ask how many of these ships have the base ship resource completed, not counting variants, descs, escort descs, and shipyard graphics, ship sprites, and targeting graphics?

      I've finished the ships up to and including the Ganba Destroyer. I also came up with an interesting idea. Since fighter bays require support crew and fighters require pilots, I made the outfits of fighter bays and fighters not only weaps and ammo, but also a given number of marines. Thoughts, anyone?

      With the exception of the contribute/require bits, and the ionization characteristics, the SHIP resources are done, Josh. About half of them have multiple variants, and they all have the full mix of DESCs. However, I don't have graphics software.

      Here's some more of the civvie ships in the plug:

      • Shogun: Named for the samurai overlords of feudal Japan, the Shogun -class cruiser by New Japan Shipyards is one of the most dangerous ships on the market. It carries two bays' worth of Shinobi -class fighters and a formidable arsenal of turbolasers and ion cannons that make it among the greatest starships ever built.
        Aesthetically speaking, the Shogun's design was inspired mainly by the Osiris cruiser in Polycon.

      • Superstar: The most popular bulk freighter in the UGF, the Superstar is slow and poorly armed. Nevertheless, thanks to surprisingly strong shields and armor, these two-and-a-half kilometer craft form the backbone of the Galactic merchant marine, carrying thousands of tons of freight to all corners of the UGF.
        The Superstar in fact has the largest cargo bay in EVN:UGF (7,500 metric tons), making a mass mod a cinch. It may not come with many weapons, but it has a respectable number of weapon emplacements.

      • Kangaroo: The Kangaroo -class transport is slightly faster than CDX Starworks' bestselling Argosy, but can't carry nearly as much cargo and, due to budget constraints, is practically a sitting duck in combat. Still, they've become quite popular in the Core Worlds, where pirates rarely appear.

      • Kestrel: Merlin Starcraft bought the blueprints and technical readouts for the Kestrel from Matt Burch before he died of a heart attack nearly two decades ago. MSC then took those readouts and tweaked them to make this new model of Kestrel that carries a full squadron of Starhawks. This keel is good for just about any purpose.

      • Firespray: Kuat Systems Engineering created this keel for law enforcement during the Old Republic, but it was made infamous as the ship of choice for the Fett family of bounty hunters. Today the United Galactic Bureau of Investigation uses Firesprays heavily as police craft, but thanks to the ease of expansion, it's become popular with privateers and pirates, somewhat ironically.
