I would love to help with a StarCraft plug. I'm not much with graphics, but I love doing storylines and descs. I could do the galaxy layout and missions strings.
I actually think Nova comes with a good enough variety of graphics that new ones aren't that necessary. If there are people who want to do new graphics, that's even better, but we could easily use the following as placeholder graphics:
Pirates = Confederacy
Federation = UED
Polaris/Vellos (All with a bright yellow or blue tint) = Protoss
Wraiths and a few weird polaris ships = Zerg
As for the limited number of systems: I personally consider that a good thing. A smaller Galaxy means less work and more likelihood that the project will get finished. After we've created a "Base Universe," other developers (or us) can add expansions. The most important thing is to give people access to a bunch of ships and outfits to try out and an environment to explore with them. Just cause its a TC doesn't mean it has to be friggin huge.
Story String Ideas:
I think that the storyline should be set just after Brood War. Each of the powers from BW (Dominion, UED, Kerrigan and Protoss) are currently recovering from their major losses. Kerrigan obviously will have the upper hand right now, but as she just spent a lot of resources defeating the Dominion, Protoss and UED, she isn't exactly in a position to conquer everything immediately. Here are some ideas for storylines that don't conflict with anything but offer some new ideas. (Will they be obsolete when Ghost comes out? Yes. But given Blizzard's habit of taking 4+ years to develop games, I don't think we have to worry about the plug-in getting spoiled anytime soon)
Confederate Resurgents String - A group of surviving Confederate Venerables want to reclaim power from the Dominion. They start you off with a few blind missions (Ferry random unknown cargo to system X. Once you've helped them for a while, they reveal themselves and ask if you want to help officially. You might strike a deal with the remaining UED forces to get ship support, and eventually steal a Psi-Emitter and bring in a bajillion zerg to attack Korhal, killing it again with poetic justice.
Hybrid String - A telepathic voice begins to enter your mind, asking that you travel to various obscure planets and locating cocooned Protoss-Zerg hybrids. You become more and more infected by a psychic plague as you obey the whims of the Xel'Naga. (Those of you who have seen the secret level in Brood War know who and what I am talking about)
Rogue Zerg String - A group of pirates are using stolen UED technology to control renegade Zerg. They may hire you (once you have a decent combat rating) to raid Kerrigan's outer bases and steal the eggs of more powerful Zerg. After doing this, you gain access to some Zerg "technology" such as infested ships (I always wondered, if they can infest a Command Center, why not a battlecruier?) and hire Zerg escorts.
Protoss String - Zeratul approaches you, heavily robed so you can't really tell who or what he is, asking for transport back to Shakuras. After that, you gradually get to help out the Protoss and gain access to their technologies.
None of these strings need to be majorly complicated. Mostly, the point is to make it so that you can't simply buy all different outfits all at once - mission strings that gradually give you more access to more powerful and exotic equipment.
------------------
Raemon's Law: Given a lack of better things to do, a group of webboard goers with way too much time on their hands will tend to develop web pages loaded with useless information on webboard dynamic theory.
Also, the SC & SCBW campaigns can be adapted into such a plug.
If you start as a terran civillain, you could join the Sons of Korhal or the Confederacy, following some of the NPCs around following the same story as Starcraft, but with a different viewpoint, depending on your faction.
After following the campaigns, it can lead the strings described above, or wait for Ghost to come out and write more story in at that point.

Can't believe I missed this!!
Awesome idea. I might try making a new starcraft ships over the weekend! Think I'll start easy with the colony ship, the progress to the dropship. What colours we wanting? Are there going to be colour variations for certain fleets perhaps (to keep in with the whole starcraft look and feel). It will be no problem creating multiple colour schemes!

Yes! Different colors!
Each faction/fleet in each race has a unit color listed in the SC manual. Not only that, but also symbols for each squadron/faction/tribe has its own symbol.
Terran
Omega Squadron: Black
Nova Squadron: Purple
Alpha Squadron: White
Sons of Korhal: Red
Umojan Protectorate: Aqua
Kel-Morian Combine: Green
Zerg
Tiamat Brood: Red
Fenris Brood: Green
Baelrog Brood: White
Garm Brood: Orange
Jorgamund Brood: Purple
Sutur Brood: Blue
Protoss
Ara Tribe: Red
Akilae Tribe: Green
Shelak Tribe: White
Sargas Tribe: Blue
Auriga Tribe: Orange
Furinax Tribe: Purple

I will try and make a ship too, probably the Scout or Wraith, but it may not have textures. ( I am learning to make textures right now.)
Good storyline idea Raemon.

Just working on adding details, recessed panels, doo-dads and weapons at the moment. Once I've done that I'll texture it and render up a scene for y'all...

added some weapons, recessed a few panels... still thinking about the details... just putting in the odd couple of minutes every so often. details will be added shortly

Cool looking wraith.
Another we might consider is changing the game to be a little more "fleet oriented." Perhaps make Dominating Planets a little more feasible (and/or Lucrative), and make certain mission goals hinge around Dominating enemy worlds.
I've always thought the long, drawn out battles with Domination were annoying and boring and just not cool. It's really not that hard, if you're a skilled player, but it's so ridiculously time consuming that, realism aside, it's not as fun as it should be.
I think worlds should instantly dump out 30 some odd ships to attack you all at once, instead of 5 ships at a time. Really big worlds might have more (perhaps up to 3 waves of 20). But really, how much of a government's fleet can afford to just sit waiting for some boistrous upstart to try and demand tribute?
A world based around StarCraft would be a perfect plug to try this out in, since StarCraft is based around conquest.

Do you happen to have the game and the OS X updates? There is some additional information that you might find useful in the icon of the Carbonized game.

Thats got to be the best idea for it so far However, mix that with normal sort missions. I think you need to mix the more traditional game play of NOVA with this to create a more Starcraft-esque game!

Yeah, Im using that a little for reference, but Im also using the Starcraft desktops found on Blizzard's Starcraft page. There's some excellent reference material on there

We may also consider creating three different three different "characters" to choose. Human civillian, protoss warrior and zerg... something or other. Human and Protoss would be pretty easy to work with. Start them out with a dropship or scout. With Zerg, you could either be an infested Terran (with some retained intelligence) or perhaps an overlord or something like that.
Perhaps you could be an original Zerg: a little larvae thingy that can infest other creatures. At the Zerg worlds, you can "purchase" other bodies to infest and fly around in. In the Zerg campaign, money wouldn't represent money, so much as an overall standing with the Hive or resources at your control.

Yeah. I think thats probably how it would work. However, I see the Zerg string working more like the Vellos string in NOVA. You get to a certain point in the string and you "grow" into a more powerful being. That would make more sense with organic beings than purchasing and infesting other bodies.
As far as I see it, the Zerg would be the hardest race to do. While with the Terrans and the Protos you already have methods of space flight and can easily adapt for any ships in the range that are missing, the Zerg pretty much require you to write their method of travel from scratch. Im not sure how that would be done...

The zerg use a kind of tunneling tech, like the wrath in NOVA*. So, thats easy to implament.

**Wow. Ok, good. A lot to discuss here. First of all, I like some of your ideas Raemon- but I disagree with your starting point (i.e after Brood War) I think some of the most dynamic and interesting things happen in the original game (though the Dark Templar **** is cool as hell) like the fall of the Confederacy, the rise of the Sons of Korhal, the invasion of Aiur, the fall of the first Overmind. I've got literally hundreds of ideas on storylines/missions/overall scenario things, but who doesn't? I think before we get ahead of ourselves here we need to figure out who has serious interest in making the scenario, as opposed to idle dreaming, which is what we're doing right now... If thats all we want to do, thats fine, but I'd at least like to try and give this a serious run.
Oh, and karma points are still up for grabs for eye candy.

I'm not very familiar with Starcraft, but this aspect of the game might match up nicely with the ShipColor field of EVN's Govt resource -- if each faction is a different govt (with govts linked together into alliances/classes), its ships could be differently tinted without Skyblade or Jules (or whomever) needing to create such a huge number of download-slowing RLEs.
Of course, you wouldn't be able to release the plug until EVN 1.0.8 comes out, since the update is probably going to change which codes point to which colors. In the meanwhile, I suspect that creating tinted pers ships would give you an idea of what each color code will do to your base sprites.

I used the ShipColor field in my SigmaStation plugin, so if you want to see what it does, download that. I don't think it will have the effect you want.

Doesn't the ship colour just make the whole ship tinted that colour? A la CATS Leviathan?
Its certainly no bother to do the changing of the hues on Photoshop, as long as people don't mind a longer download time...
