Mission bits, more often called bits, are the things that make nova grant and remove missions, technology and other stuff, but for a person like you that is just starting plugs you may want to start on easier stuff, like items and weapons. Nova uses a lot of desc resources, open up the data files a have a look and see what some good numbers are.

For used bits, check out the nova bits bible from the addons page. Very useful reference. For resouce id's, i reccomend looking at the datafiles.
In any case, for Descs, most of the desc ID's are set by the ID of whatever the desc is linked to - If you want to describe planet 674, by definition, you have to use desc 674.

Why cant you use Resedit/Novatools? The ban on resedit is rahter oppressive. In my opinion, it is the best way to edit.

Well, my dad says i could mess up the computer and alter the Os or something.Plus the pluin i am making is not for EVN, but EV, because the mission bits are a bit more simple. I will read the Ev bible, thanks for that.

Sure, if you used resedit to edit the OS files. I am sure you could do atleast as much damage with a text editor too if you modified the wrong files (mabey not though - Macs make it really hard to use apps to open things they're not made for, which annoys the hell outta me, because it's forever forgetting that a certain app is able to open a filetype).

That's because they're encoded different ways, and if the app isn't hardcoded to recognize the method used, you'll get a bunch of symbols.
Dan27: Tell your parents that all you're doing is making plug-ins for a game you like. Tell them that you have no interest whatsoever in programming, and that you know the first thing to do is back up your file. Tell them that you won't be touching the system files (ResEdit warns you when you try anyway). That's what I did ('cept for the bit about not being interested in programming...I love programming, except for Java, which I despise).
If your parents still have issues, they don't have to know you're using it! 
Anyway, I don't see what you plan to accomplish. There is no Wild Geese storyline in EV.

That may be true, but someone put out an extension to the storyline. 14 missions added if i remember correctly......
