    • Polaris Hypergate


      Hey, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what a Polaris hypergate would look like. Also, how does one make one of those rlë8 things, anyway?

    • The destroyed hypergates in Polaris space look like any other so I'd imagine that they'd all look alike regardless of where they were. They were all constructed at around the same time before the different cultures became isolated. I imagine that if the Polaris were to construct their own for some reason they'd look much cooler, all organic and all 😉

      To create Rle* you need to use EnRLE and drop in a shan resource than contains both ship sprite and the corresponding mask.

      Well, I was thinking that the Polaris could rebuild the hypergates and make them look cooler. I could always use the graphic for one of the sky mining stations (the spiky one), and add some kind of cool glow.

      What? How do I make a shan resource that contains both ship sprite and the corresponding mask? I don't know a thing about shans. I'll read the shan section of the Nova Bible and see if that helps, though.

      Edit: It didn't help. I'm confused.
      Edit #2: Wait, both ship sprite and corresponding masks? I'm trying to make a hypergate. Besides, the hypergate in the data files doesn't have a shan resource, only a spin and the rlë*'s.

      The Sprites and masks are created by sending a movie file with the ship or spob graphic through m2s. If you only have a graphic with no animation, like a station or a planet, you can easily create both the sprite and mask without m2s. If you want to make RLE* files you'll need ResEdit and EnRLE. In ResEdit, create a new file and include both the sprite and mask PICT images. Then create a shan(or spin) just like how it says in the other post. Save the file and then send it through EnRLE - VOILA! RLE8 and RLED. Shans are also interchangeable with spins in that they're both created the same way. Shans are just for ship while Spins are for everything else.

      First off, what's an m2? So if I want a hypergate that opens and closes just like the one in the game, I'll need to make 42 150x150 sprites (plus 42 masks) in Photoshop or something? That sounds like a good way to go insane. :eek: Anyway, so I then make a spin resource in the file that has the sprite and mask picts that is exactly the same as the current hypergate one (except that I'll find other ID's to use). Then I EnRLE it. Do I have the process down correctly? Oh, and about that hypergate spin: I easily found what the SpritesID was referring to, but where is the MaskID? I can't find it anywhere in the data files.

      As for the design, I'll probably just make the hypergate more purplish-black and rounded than usual.

      Edit: I downloaded EnRLE/DeRLE, and the readme answered some of my questions.

    • Related to this topic, but slightly off. Is it possible for stationary objects such as planets and stations to have animated images? This would make things like blinking lights on stations possible, or planets that rotate.

      Actually, yes, it would require you to do the whole process of making frames on a grid, making a spin resource, etc.

      To Kame: I actually made the Banshee using your instructions on the other topic (although I used resedit and EnRLE, not MC) as practice, so I've gotten the hang of it now, although I do still want to know what an m2 is.

    • m2s is a program (w00tware I think) that turns movie files into those 6x6 (or however big) images with every view of the ship - movie 2 sprite. For those people that make their graphics in a 3D program, they can use this to turn the animation of the ship spinning into two image files - the sprite PICT and sprite PICT mask. Much easier than rendering each frame 😉 Basically, if you choose to make a Polaris hypergate, this is the way to go. Sounds like the rest of it you got alright.

      Sounds good, but I don't have a 3D program. I'll check out that one on one of the other topics, though.

      Actually, I just made an alternate hypergate in Photoshop: It's a two-frame smiley face (closed mouth and open mouth). It's kinda funny to see it spitting out Pegasi.

    • Hmmm.... animated stellars.... blinking lights on stations.... Could one make a 1x2 grid/mask (one of them normal, the other with lights on) to do blinking lights? It would be a project in the realm of photoshop instead of 3d modeling apps. It'd be pretty cool, methinks, and easy to do.

      Yeah, one could, as the 2-frame smiley animation I mentioned above works great. The open mouth is a little small, though.

      Anyway, My ideas of what a revamped Pol. gate would be.
