    • Month names?

After a great deal of searching through the various STR and STR# resources, I finally found that the month names are in an STR# resource in the actual program.
With this knowledge, if I copied that STR# resource into my plug, and gave it the appropriate ResID, would it override the ones in the program? I haven't actually tested this because it might do something unpredictable and undesirable, so if anyone has or knows, this info would be appreciated.

Also, on a similar note, is there any way to make the date elements appear in a different order? (ie "2002 12 17" or something similar, instead of "December 17th, 2002")

#STR are handled in Nova like other resources. If you have the same ID of the resource in your plug, Nova would overrride the months. And there is nothing wrong with trying, your hard drive won't explode if you do something wrong with the Nova resources (just don't go below ID 128 !!!). As for the dates I don't think there is a way to change the order. (correct me if I'm wrong).

    • I kinda wish to be able to change the number of days each month, and
also change the way leap year works, for a certain plug-in I'm working
on. Of course, the current engine won't allow it.

But then, Nova started out as a EVO plug+hack, the hack part meaning
they changed the EVO engine a bit so it does what mcb didn't design
it to do. So maybe if I just a lot about mac resources and stuff, I
might be able to edit the Nova engine to make that happen d-:

But yeah, everything Entarus said is right, and I've tried that at least
on the original EV engine a long time ago (-:

    • While your assessment of how Nova "started out" is vaguely accurate, ATMOS had the full cooperation of Matt Burch by the time Nova was an official Ambrosia SW title. To that end, he made pretty much whatever modifications to the engine that they needed for their scenario. No amount of knowlege of resources or coding will enable you to do something similar without Matt's assistance.

Anyway, take advantage of your ability to rename the months, and don't get too hung up on little things like date formats. There are bigger fish to fry.

    • With that in mind, why exactly are the months in the game itself, as opposed to a data file?

you mean why does the engine hard-code it so there are 12 months, and it goes 31-28-31-30-31... etc days? Probably because there's no "date" resource for us to edit, and mcb just feel like hard-coding it into the engine. It's easier this way than to figure out a resource format and have the engine read it and behave accordingly.

EV, EVO, and EVN's scenario all have humanity based from Earth, as an extension of our future (as opposed to Star Wars or other scifi that doesn't deal with our future) so the current dominant Earth calender gets adopted without much thought.

those are my guesses. Only mcb himself, if anyone, knows the truth.
