...and please, don't pull a "kberg" on us and leave us with an early, half-done build. We want to test this engine out until it's done.

eytee, it is indeed a pleasure to hear from you again.

Tycho, glad to see Helian Wars is back. It seems that we always see these multiplayer EV projects emerge during summer. Program on!

must have missed the slather this year. well it's summer here now, so logically it all works out.

i also just realised it was mazca who locked my helian wars topic, so it will be he who must die.

(throw down guantlet).... what ship do you want to die in mazca? only stock UE EVO ships allowed(nothing higher than the UE equivalent of a turncoat). choose 2 moderator scums to be your allies. i choose eytee and salami capable. i will be in my helian.

eytee, choose your weapon. renegade ships only.

till the ether collapses on itself.

    • excellent. the guerrillas are forming as planned. salami has expressed adamantly that he will never be seen in a renegade ship and at least wants an az. but i don't think that is fair against our cowardly and silent foes.

corun? you up for a turncoat?

i probably will rename it renegade wars.

gonna add filming support soon so we can watch our heroes fall.

is the net picture over a lan or the internet and how does your net engine work?

      ------------------

    • it's half and half. speal and i were lan'ed and nil was over the internet. it's all just tcp/ip so there is no distinguishing between the two. i was going to ask you why you had a lan and internet version, but i assumed it was how java works.

at the moment the protocol requires all clients to send their x and y position as well as their direction, every frame. the server will then send all this information to all clients, who will update their screens and game progress. this is fairly adequte for ships just moving around, but i have to sit down and think about how firing will work.

at the moment the clients handle the players input, but i was thinking that maybe the server should handle this. it won't be a great load until there are 100 players. so yeah, i think it will stay as the client figuring out it's own player's movement and possibly it's own weapons. but the server will handle collisions.

      hopes this answers stuff.

    • I have two versions because the lan version sendsa too much infomation for the internet to handle... the lan version sends about 40 times per second whereas the internet version only sends 10 times per second and that is the only difference... i just couldn't be bothered to put a checkbox in saying "Internet Play" :).... Also, some advise on making the networking faster(less jerky) : instead of sending the x, y coordinatess every frame, send the x velocity and y velocity every frame and send x, y every 5-10 frames and make it so that the ship goes at the last recieved velocity untill it recieves the next and every 5frames when it recieves the x, y have it update the position of the ship as it can get a bit off course.
      hope that made sense....

Also for firing i suggest you send a boolean every frame saying whether the ship has fired or not and send the damage done by the players ship to all the other ships every 5-10 frames so that all players have syncronized damage... Hope that made sense again, if not then email me and i'll try and give some examples of code...

Also, is there any chance of me having a downloasd for your net version?
And i'd rather be in a helian than a turncoat btw...

Someone once suggested using direction vectors instead of explicit coordinates and frame numbers, extrapolating for display purposes and updating only when the direction changed. That sounds more reasonable to me -- don't know how hard it would be to implement it, though.

    • NTiOzymandias, i think that is what corun was saying:
send the x velocity and y velocity

it's kind of like. the client can then determine the ships direction vector, without being told where the ship really is.

those ideas are really good and i'll probably implement them. holidays next week.

the version in the screenshot was hardcoded for myself, speal and nilobject. so, you could download it, but it would do nothing. it was a bit of a hack just to test the networking principles, but since they will change now, it's redundant.

a variable version will be made in the holidays. i'm still of the thinking that the cient will send a "primary fire" message each time a shot is fired, and the server will handle all weapons.

yeah... you're prolly right... the server should handle all weapons, and the sooner the net version the better :)... i want a turn against your helian!and btw, i have decided that in my new project i am going to have multidirectional weapons ie like the green weapon from deimos rising that fires at 0 deg -10 deg and 10deg....Also, will your support team play and other cool networking things like that ( ie capture flag etc)?

      ------------------

    • the main gametype will be team based. this could be a team of one to a team of whatever. but there could be 100 teams or whatever. this would just be a huge deathmatch.

but then there would be games like capture the flag and world domination and kill the guy with the skull, or funny hat, or flailing arms or electric powered fooling machine. just a whole bunch of games like in marathon and myth. there'd also be one where each ship has a metal ball and chain attached to the back of it and physics would work and ships would tripp out everywhere.

      basic net support a week away(maybe 2).
