    • Need help with memory & stuff in Plugin- URGENT!!!

Here's my problem: My to-be-released plugin, "Reign of the UE," is about 99.9999% finished- all I need to do is make a change or two in the mission descs and check them over again for spelling. But guess what? When I put it in my plugins folder, the game loads up but then there's a message telling me that an error has occurred- I should increase EVO's memory allocation and try again. Well guess what? I've set my iMac's virtual memory to maximum (996K), upped EVO's memory allocation to the max, and I still get the error message and no game! "Reign of the UE" is 1.1 MB, will come in regular and MAGMA versions, has 5 ships, 50 missions (2-3 are regular EVO missions with added mission strings, and 2-3 setup missions), a ton of systems (all the remaining Voinian systems (except for Dyeram and Voinia) had to go through UE Frontier and United Earth stages, and the Hinwar systems had to be modified so there were no more Voinian fleets there after the Voinians were vanquished) and several new weapons, outfits and dudes. Once I had the "basic" game done, (missions, ships, systems, weapons, outfits etc) I decided to add some mission-related "disasters" for a little bit of "decoration" and a few "persons" for the U.E. Dreadnought. It was after I added the disasters and the persons did I get the error message. If anyone has successfully dealt with problems like this please post. I will try to e-mail you the plugin as soon as I can- just get it fixed before February 28. I'll remember to thank you in the release version's readme.

      God bless,

      UE Patriot

    • Sigh. This is the one problem that hits just about every plugin sometime. I believe the solution is in the Plugin Developer's FAQ or Bomb's Plugin Making Guide...one of them.

The problem: some resource is pointing at another resource ID - but that doesn't exist. The #1 most common resource type for this to happen to is the spďn resource. I don't know what happens if, say, a planet points to a nonexistant landing pict, or a weapon to a nonexistant sound (hmm, I should do some testing....nah :p), but I and many other people have discovered the curse of the invalid spďn "out of memory" problem.

Don't bother to email me the plugin: I don't have the time to download, resend, or fix it. Just find the darn problem yourself now that you know what it is. Squash it like the "bug" it is! 🙂

If it's not a missing reference, then I don't know what it could be, offhand. Were you using EV-Edit at all?

      ------------------

    • Actually, the entire plugin as it it was NOT made with EV-Edit, I used Mission Control (1.0.4 and 1.0.6), EVO Developer's Map, ShipWrite and ResEdit. I did use EV-Edit at first to add some persons, but I later deleted them- some time after that I created some persons using ResEdit, but deleted them after recieving the error message. Thanks for the tip, Weepul.

      God bless,

    • Yeah. Make sure there are no missing spďns or masks. That's usually the case.

    • Run through it with plug checker. it solves the problems that cause this.

Is the answer to this question 'no'?

    • To UE Patriot - URGENT! VERY URGENT!: UE Patriot, I've finished the intro PICTs for Reign of the UE as you requested, however, I'm not sure if you got them. Did you get them? I sent the PICTs a few days ago, but I'm wonder as to whether or not I got your current e-mail address. So, did you get my e-mail, or do I just need to e-mail it to you again? Please respond quickly!

    • 99.9999999% of the time, sprites are the cause of this problem. Either they're missing or pointing to the wrong resource, as above described. I always have a "working copy folder" - every time I make changes, I boot up the game to make sure it works, then copy the plug(s) into the "working copy" folder so I have a backup in case I have this problem - it's a lot easier to go back a generation and re-do the changes then it is to try and figure out what sprite is causing the problem. Provided you copy the plug every time you make changes. It's a very easy 2-second habbit to get into.

    • You right, it was the sprites, I think. Anyway, Reign of the UE is out and uploaded, so nobody needs to respond to this article anymore! 🙂

Wow! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who does this. Funny thing is, I've got like 50 copies in my "Before Revision" folder. The oldest one is November 11th, better keep it just in case...
