    • The Ultimate Ship Equipment

It can be argued that the phase turret is the best, or perhaps the neutron turret.
These arguments take place all over the place, and I think that although this will
have come up often, it should be brought up again.

Let's together work out what is the best type of equipment or ship. Is a fighter
better than a warship? Is Stud Beefpile's Firebird class any good? (never seen it
myself but I've heard about it)

This will help people choose the right ship, understand what to use against who,
and give us all a chance to make up our own Firebird class ship - once I play EVO
again I'm making something similar to Stud's Firebird idea myself.

Please, no-one boast about your ship. This isn't what this is here for. It's here
to talk about equipment and ships in general, not yours personally. You can say, "I
think neutron turrets are good and I use them on my UE Cruiser", but not "bet you
can't beat my Crescent Warship with Emalgha turrets!"

      Thank you for reading.

      ------------------

    • Well, I prefer to use a light Warship, such as a Lazira or a Miranu Gunship, as my main chassis. I usually ditch all the secondaries, buy the three speed upgrades, three phase/neutron turrets, two D.R. Launchers and a bunch of D.R. Rockets. Sometimes I change my main secondary, like maybe SAEs if I work for the Igadzra or maybe Phased Beams if I'm with the Zidagar. I like to add most of the stuff that takes up no space, such as the auto-refueller, the density scanner and IFF decoder, the escape pod... you know. This ships handles like a heavy fighter, has better protection and secondary weapons than the Arada, and all in all, I feel it's a good mix of strengths. (Sorry Stud, but the ol' Arada is just a little bit vulnerable with me in the cockpit. :))

As for turrets, I usually stick with Phase as my main. I mean, the only race they're weak against is the Voinians, and most of the time, I'm not fighting them. Against all other races, Phase weapons work like a charm, with their good speed, rate of fire, and hitting power. When I'm fighting Voinians, I go to Neutron Turrets if I can, or Blaze or Emalgha if I can't.

    • The ship of my choice is usually the Crescent Fighter.

Lately I've used Zidaras and Aradas, both which I like a lot - with similar
      equipping to yours.

However, I still love this equipping (may be inaccurate):

      Ship: Crescent Fighter
      Shield upgrades (Azdgari if possible)
IFF and Density, all the Systems upgrades and ECMs
Repulsor Beam (for changing Azdara speeds from their max to the impact speed of the
weapon, so I can hunt them down and kill them)
Pursuit Missiles (I like them when I'm too lazy)

I simply spearhead or outcircle almost any opponent (except Igazra, who I run from!)

      --------------------

My Zidara uses SAD modules, as they are good in large numbers, and uses similar
other weapons to the Crescent Fighter, but without pursuit missiles.

      ------------------

    • Oh, and I use phase. Neutrons takes too much space, blaze not enough range for
a good spearhead as you fire less shots per pass, and Emalgha - yuck!

      Phase 2

      Pocket Warship 1
      Fighter 1

      ------------------

    • Paladin - I'm honored! Thank you for complimenting (sp?) the Firebird! I truly am, honored. 🙂 Also, your Crescent Fighter seems like a good layout, and I'll bet you've taken out dozens of Voinian Cruisers, or whatever warship you like to face. Am I correct?

Samurai - That's ok! We all have our own tastes! Your Lazira sounds like its a pretty strong ship!

As for me, most of you know about my Firebird, but only a few know of my Icewind Falcon. I will post the stats of each for all to enjoy. 🙂

      Current Ship: Icewind Falcon
      Ship type: Crescent Fighter

      Upgrades/Outfits:
      4 Swivel Phasers
      Dospect
      Sensory Enhancements
      1 Fuel Tank
      1 Fuel Scoop
      1 Afterburner
Cargo Pod (Required for Zidagar and UE Missions)
      Systems Enhancement
This setting leaves me with 1 ton of free space.

If I take my time, and act like a SMART pilot, I can take out a Voinian Cruiser with ease. I have taken out 3 Voinian Cruisers and 4 Voinian Frigates that were stacked before. The ships that give me the most trouble are Azdaras and Voinian Heavy Fighters. On the Dreadnought mission, my backup was totally obliterated when he was at 54% shields. Thus meaning I pretty much destroyed the Dreadnought myself.

Personal ultimate, favorite ship (though I am close to my falcon): A.E.S. Firebird
      Ship Type: Arada

      Outfits/Upgrades:
      Dospect
      4 Swivel Phasers
      2 Fuel Tanks
      2 Fuel Scoops
      2 Mass Expansions
      4 Shield Enhancers
      1 Shield Generator
      1 Exp. Shield Generator
      Sensory/ECM Equuipment
      1 Afterburner
      Marine Equipment

This leaves me with 6 tons of free space

With this ship, I've probably taken out 2/3 of the Voinian Navy, perhaps ALL the North Tip Renegades and South Tip Renegades, both Human and Alien, maybe 1/4 of the Zidagar Navy, and plenty of Igazras.

Think I'm lying? Read "Moments of Pride and Accomplishment". Still think I'm lying? Oh well, think what you wish.

As you can see, I'm a fighter pilot for the most part. On my earlier pilots, I have one flying an Igazra, and another the UE Carrier, and another the Crescent Warship. However those days are far back, and now I can summarize pretty much what you need to know to survive in this universe: "Speed can be your best friend, or your worst enemy."

I choose to have it be my friend. Others may hate speed, and use raw power. Both approaches work, both can be successful. However in my case, I need weapons that don't weigh too much, are fast, hard hitting, and can't be a turret. I don't EVER use turrets on my Firebird, or my Falcon. Why? Too much space, and they both have a maximum of 1 turret. I turn towards my personal favorite: The Swivel Phase Cannon.

The Swivel Phase Cannon is the ultimate for fighters. You can keep hitting your enemy while blasting towards him, it will target your enemy, unlike regular cannons, and it wipes out shields with a snap. However, it is not so great against Voinians. I don't look at it that way though. I see it as a challenge. People like to switch to Neutron of Blaze or even Emalgha when fighting the big Rocks, I keep my phasers, and accept the challenge. Generally, I win the battle, the only downside is that it takes around 5 minutes of constant shooting to take down a Voinian Cruiser with phasers. Also, on fighters, afterburners are a MUST. I can't think of a time when I haven't relied on my afterburners to get away from all those rockets. Crescent Fighters and Aradas may be fast, but not fasr enough when you have 5% armor, and a rocket is almost in your engine it's so close.

    • I prefer using the heavily armored tanker. I have a few pilots that fly Igazras, and this is what they have:

Igazra #1 (the Mighty Yellow Penis)

      1 Dospect
      1 Bronev Plating
      5 Neutron Turrets
      2 Fuel Tanks
      2 Fuel Scoops
      4 Shield Enhancers
      Sensory Stuff/ECM/Pod
      1 Afterburner
      1 Needle Jammer
      1 UE Cloaking Device
      1 Plasma Siphon
      The 3 Miranu upgrades

That ship is just a big, semi-fast, heavily armored tank. Even when I lose all my shields, it takes crescent ships just as long to take down the armor.

My other Igazra has the same upgrades, but

      -1 Bronev Plating
      -5 Neutron Turrets
+1 Crescent Fighter Bay + 3 Crescent Fighters
      +5 Phase Turrets
+2 Pursuit Missile Launchers + 40 Pursuit Missiles

That Igazra isn't as powerful, but it still packs a punch. The fighters are a nice addition.... I still like the first one much more, however. The second one, I really didn't know what to do with. The pursuit missiles are just there cuz they fit, and fighter swarms were getting annoying.... so, because of the p missiles fast fire rate, and semi-decent damage, I could pick off fighters pretty easily...

My final ship is called the U.E.S. Juggernaut. It's a Crescent Warship that's conquered most of the galaxy.

      1 Dospect
      4 Phase Turrets
1 Crescent Fighter Bay + 3 Crescent Fighters
      2 Fuel Tanks
      2 Fuel Scoops
      4 Shield Enhancers
      1 Shield Generator
      1 Exp. Shield Generator
      Sensory Stuff/ECM/Pod
      1 Afterburner
      1 Needle Jammer
      1 UE Cloaking Device
      The 3 Miranu upgrades

It works well... does it's job. It's fast than most every AI ship, and it has 4 CW and 2 Igazra escorts, so it's well defended.

    • On your first Igazra, you say you have Bronev and a UE Cloaking Device. How is this possible? I've never done the Voinian Missions, but I'm pretty sure you can't get a UE Cloaking Device on them, and I know you can't buy Bronev after doing the Paaren Station missions.

    • I fly a Crescent Warship. Here are its stats:
      -1 C.F. Bay
      -3 C.F.
      -All Phase Turrets
+Mass Expansions to 50 tons of cargo left
+As many Neutron Turrets as I can put in
      +4 Shield Capacitors
      +1 Azdgari Advanced Shield Recharge
      +1 Shield Recharger
      +1 Dospect armour
+As many SAEs that will fit

If I decide to cheat I will use a Dark Crescent Warship

    • Well, I'm certain some people know my ship, what it is, what it has, but I'll give the lowdown to all those who haven't heard what my ship has.

      Class: Crecent Warship
      Name: S.S. Indestructable
      Weapons/Upgrades: 4 Phase Turrets, 1 Voinian Rocket launcher+15 rockets, 1 dispy launcher+15 rockets,1 CF bay+3CF's, 4 Shield Capacitors, 1 RCS/Thrust/Engine upgrade, and 40 tons of cargo space.

And to those who think you hafta switch from Phase to Neutron each time you enter Voinian space, you don't!! Phase Turrets/Cannons might not be as effective as Neutrons on the Voinian's armor, but after a little while you can defeat it if you're ship is at least as fast as a UE Destroyer/CW, I know because I've done it over and over and over and over....It could just go on, the list of times I've showed Voinians up with superior speed and brainpower, no matter what main weapon I had! I once took out a V. Frigate in a UE Fighter! (Not that it's any challenge when you're as good as I am or anything ;))

You go through the Voinian missions, get a Fake ID from Renegade space (which clears your rating in all UE core planets), and then you go and do the UE missions. It'll take a while to get the UE frontier happy with you again, but it works. And it's nice to swipe that Voinian technology.

    • It took me a LOOONG time to work on the Igazra. I had to get it first, then get the bronev put on.... then I had to finish the voinian string, do part of the UE string (miranu trade), work for the Iggies, sell all that worthless crap that came with the ship, and then put the rest of the stuff on.

    • That actually works in 1.0.2? You can work with the Voinians, get a fake ID, and then work with the UE in 1.0.2?

    • Stud, I made the equipping up myself.

It has nothing to do with the Firebird.

And I don't use armour plating - never really got around to trying it out, actually.

    • I'm a tank kinda person, my ships an igazra (sp?)

      stats
      3 main upgrades
      dospect armour
      5 phase turrets
      an afterburner
      2 fuel tanks
      2 fuel scoops
      IFF decoder
      Density Scanner
      Sensor Upgrade
      Auto Refueler
      Needle Jammer
      ECM system
      Marine upgrade
      Plasma Siphon
      Nebula Penetration Device

This leaves me with 150 tons of space which I fill with an appropriate secondary weapon. I like this setup cause with afterburner I can monty python most ships and anything faster I can kill in about 5 seconds.

    • I realy like the Blaze Turrets. realy nice sound..but if u watah distroy something FAST u should use the neutron guns....(too bad the whole Voinian race isn't built like that) 🙂

    • What I used to do was go for sheer power. Mainly, I cheated a little by modifing the number of turrets allowed to say, 6, and making the max number of guns higher too. I'd then fill the turret spaces withwhatever had the fastest fire rate, and do the same for the guns. This way, whenever an enemy came close, no matter how fast or strong, they would be swamped in a cloud of turret and gun fire. Small fighter ships would fly through and blow up straight away, and bigger ships would take major beatings with every pass.

Of course, that's hard to do if you don't cheat, which I don't anymore. I found a great way to dominate planets though. Simply do the missions to get the cloaking device, hire/capture a few fighter escorts, place yourself directly over whichever planet you want to dominate, then message said planet. As soon as the first wave of ships come out, cloak, and the enemy ships should just sit there (or, at least, they used to!) Let your escorts take care of everything, and when the ships stop, you have yourself a dominated planet. 🙂

      Good fortune,

    • I prefer phase weapons. They are not quite as effective as Voinians, but they will fit on most ships. The Neutron guns are probably superior in most respects, but they are just to big. Blaze cannons have way to short of a range for my tastes, and Emalgha cannons are useless against shields. I also hate trading weapons all the time. I have an idea though, why not make a voinian cruiser into my smuggling ship..... 😄

    • I usually use a Crescent Warship with the fighters removed and extra guns installed, although lately I've been enjoying flying an Arada whenever I don't need heavy firepower. I generally avoid fighters and secondary weapons whenever possible.

    • This is to Flatulence. I agree that the neutron turrets lays the smack down no matter where you are however the slow firing rate has always given me trouble when fighting fighter. Since you like neutron turrets do you have a technique for dealing with cresent fighters and azdara. The previous reason is why I have always stuck with phase in the cresent. Also instead of a fighter bay have you thought about using defense pods. I usually only use them when my shields are down. I cloak go above my target, uncloak and bombs away. With 60 pods and 8 d. launchers, I can really make a battle short even against an Igazra.

    • I like N. cannons, but not N. turrets. The turrets, although the pic shows them as having two cannons, only fire at the same rate as the cannons. Compared to other turrets, N. turrets aren't that good. Phase turrets do more damage to shields in a given amount of time than N. turrets, and Blaze turrets do more damage to armor (and close on shields).
