    • EV lives? I've been gone for so long.

WOW, I had no idea the community for EV was still 'there'. I thought like so many games of its type the community fades and goes off to other games.

I know many communities don't appreciate rambling, or related, but I wish just to introduce myself, and get over the excitment of reviving an old devotion and in a friendly manner find myself in a community I was previously unaware of. 🙂

Man, seeing this site and seeing the ships just brings back memories. I used to play EV avidly, was writing a plug-in too large a scale to complete (like so many others). Until I lost possession of my G3 years ago and moved onto a PC. A changeover I was much appreciative of, but the largest loss I had was that of EV.

I would find it worth it to run a small mac emulator to play EV on my PC. Could anyone fill me in on huge things I missed? I was there for the release of Override. However the somewhat gritty graphics got to me. The new ships seemed just too like they ran out of ideas. However I remember some awesome mods, and some uncanny talent. After seeing this board I spent a good hour looking over my backups that have survived from my g3. I found one highly unfinished shot from a set of ships I was developing.

To avoid trying to post this image, annoying some, Ill leave you the link :

      (url="http://"http://www.postnuclear.net/images/racer.jpg")http://www.postnucle...mages/racer.jpg(/url)

Its not nearly as detailed or superior as the pics my brief browsing has shown me, most particular those by Captain Skyblade, but the image is dated, and a reflection of my skill and creativity years ago, however don't let me sound prideful, I still feel Captain Skyblades model remakes are phenomenal and far better then my ability.

edit : I have read more on the board and seem to have found info on this: In addition, I'm sure this topic has come up in miniscule numbers, and futily so, but is there any remorse for an EV addict, in ownership of a PC?

To conclude my quite elaborate Introductory post, My coding skill has reached level far greater then that of years past when I played EV. However that knowledge is based off of web based application coding, similiar to that of C++. A goal of mine for many years is to recreate that experience that EV made, but for a PC game. Any thoughts on this?

Anyways, time is money, as they say. So I'll stop taking your money with my 2 cents.

      Peace-

Yeap, the Escape Velocity community certainly lives on. I got hooked on the game back in 1996, back when plugin developing sounded like a joke to me. I hung around the forums a bit, but never registered or posted. I've returned to the forums, as an even bigger EV fan, and a full-time graphics developer (or so it seems :p).

Traffic has actually greatly increased during the last few months. When I first registered back in February, this forum had just over 6,000 posts. Now, not even a year later, it has made a dramatic climb to over 30,000. Frequent posters have become more common, and people's love for EV lives on. No matter how much of an impact Nova has on the series, Escape Velocity will always be the classic.

Of course, I do play other games every now and then (Ares, Riven, Deus Ex etc.), but nothing beats good 'ol EV.

Darn, I couldn't stand to go back to a PC environment. I've got two precious G3s and an iMac, and they ain't going anywhere. 😉 Did your old Mac break down, or did you get rid of it in place of a PC?

Wow, that's an impressive image. I've yet to achieve the skill of advanced modelling, but I'm doing my best to learn all I can in the 3D world (I hope to persue it and web designing as a career). I personally don't believe my ship remakes come close to beating half the work seen at the EV Image Gallery (another forum added, likely after you left). Your own graphic there is quite impressive. I've only been into 3D graphics for around four months now, so I have plenty to learn.

What 3D application did you use for that?

As for the emulation issue, I believe someone here can fill you in. Since I've never had to worry about emulators, I know nothing about them.

Welcome back. Good to see "one of the originals" return. 😉 Hope you intend on hanging around for the time to come.

      4 months???
That makes me feel guilty. I've been doing graphics for twice that long and I haven't made anything near as good as what you make.

Welcome back Lucid. That's a very nice graphic you have. I like the fighter in particular.

Yeap, four months. I've actually had Infini-D for much longer than that, but never messed around with it until recently. Certainly beats (url="http://"http://tmgmedia.net/tempo/Shipyard.html") the hardships of Photoshop graphics(/url), though. 😉 They took nearly twice as long to create. Perspective is no problem with 3D programs, where as it's a major issue with 2D art.

Remember, I've had around six years of experience with Photoshop, which made learning Infini-D quite a breeze. We all progress at different rates, and you get better with every graphic you create. Keep it up, and you'll go a long way...

For the emulator, I suggest you try WarBeast's tutorial. I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard good things about it. As for the current state of the EV community, the biggest thing coming right now is the impending release of the new game EV Nova, which appears to be coming very soon. If you haven't already, you should check out the EV Nova Screenshots and the Nova Preambles.

It's not a matter of having run out of ideas. The EV Override scenario was made by different people than the original Escape Velocity one.

Yes an oldie, but recognized/popular? no.. was trying to help some EV designers get free webhosting off of my site postnuclear.net.

Bryce 3d, one of the best renderering engines on the market, plus the prog used to design all the landing scenes 😛

so very true. I too have had almost 5 years of photoshop work, 3 years of 3d, and 2 years of web design, and yet web design is my strongest asset. If your having trouble at something, keep trying and you'll find you learn things in steps.

David Arthur, thanks for the heads up on Nova, saw that referred somewhere, wasnt sure what that meant.

Like David Arthur said, EV Nova is probably the biggest thing going on around now. You should also check out the Nova web board. I would give you a link, but I'm incredibly lazy.

Say, you wouldn't happen to have Infini-d 4.5 that you could sell me, wouldja? 🙂
