    • Bryce... does it work with Coldstone


      I have the program Bryce. It's great and I was wondering, since I haven't tinkered with CS lately if it supports Bryce. Because it seems like a great way to do landscape or scenery. Anyone know?

    • Hi. I have Bryce as well. Coldstone will support pictures that you create in Bryce so long as you convert them to png file or pict file. I'm using bryce to create the maps for my game. Also the pictures must be converted to 16 bit resolution and be 72 dpi.

      Not to mention animations...Bryce can export an ani as a folder of PICT images with numeric suffixes.

    • I also use Bryce for nature items like rocks. I don't save anything in Bryce except for the original Bryce file that I want to keep. I use Snapz Pro 2 and save everything I want as a pict (.pct) file. For me, it's much faster and cleaner that way. I made my opening picture (start game, load game, quit game) that way and it works fantastically. Snapz Pro 2 also converts whatever you want into Coldstone specs and still maintains quality. I then open the pict file in Photoshop to get rid of the white border quickly and easily (for nature items I make in Bryce).

      I'd be interested in how you do the animations from Bryce to Coldstone.

      Really, you're making your maps with Bryce? (I'm assuming the landscaping and not the non-nature items.) How's it working for you? I'd think there would be problems with the horizon line and the view of the hero in relation to the perspective that Coldstone seems to want. I may be wrong here. I just tried to make a wall in Bryce so I can piece it together in Coldstone and it failed utterly because of Bryce's perspective.

    • Actually i have had few problems with it so far, but i have not been able to use it as much lately as I am focusing on the plot for my game. I generally create my objects, (barrels, walls, whatever) in bryce, then switch my camera view to "From the top" so that I'm looking down on my objects from above. This removes the very troublesome horizon line. I then rotate my objects so that line up with the prespective that Coldstone wants. I have an early test image and bryce file i can email you if you would like. The problem i found with this particular file is that the hero is way to big compared to the room...so i will have to resize it and fix it up a bit (um i mean finish it).

    • Oh sweet! I just made a wall piece in Bryce and did what you suggested (view from top) to manipulate it. No more pesky Bryce perspective. I then pieced the wall to make it longer in Coldstone and it worked like a charm. Many, many thanks!

      You might want to consider keeping the barrels in perspective, though. It looks fantastic. You do know how to make the entire canvas white, don't you? It took me forever to figure THAT one out!

      I suppose that if you were to make a map, you could rotate that, too, after clicking on viewing from the top?

      I considered making a map from Bryce, complete with ponds, rivers, and hills, (just the ground) and then piecing in the items like walls and trees and grass shoots. Is that what you're doing?

      As you've figured out by now, the preset views (front, back, top, etc.) can not be tilted or angled. The better way is to go into a non-camera view and edit the camera numerically. Also, try using an extremely long telephoto lense. The longer your lense, the more the scene will flatten out. Unfortunately, there is no way (as least up to B4), to render without perspective entirely.

      I'm old-fashioned, tho...I started scenery in Bryce as massive top-down shots of textured plains, then took those into PhotoShop to crop out small squares which I then made into seamless tiles using all the usual PhotoShop tools.

      As far as Bryce goes, I really need to sit down with that program again at some point. Version 5 is worth the upgrade price for the tree generator alone!

      I know Bryce has some a enthusiastic (rabid?) community; does anyone know of any good (and recently-updated) sites with Bryce tutorials?

      Eh? The Edit menu operates on objects, not preset views. Or were you thinking the "bank" controls? The preset views are so-called because they are, well, preset.

    • Open up Bryce and make the entire canvas white. Up at the top is a cube. Click on it, and create a cube. Texture the cube. Then change to Top View. Click on EDIT and you'll see the icons at the top. Click on ROTATE and rotate the cube to make it look the way you want it to look. Change the sun direction to make it look the way you want it to. Render it. I use Snapz Pro 2 to export into a pict file. I then use Photoshop to get rid of the white glow around it.
