    • How long until codes expire?

I registered Coldstone and recieved the code some time last week, but I entered it yesterday. When I went to start a new game or plugin I could not choose where to save the file and had no way to back out of the textbox I was in or quit the program. I had to force quit. Do I need a new code? How would I get that? Or is it just a bug with the program? Any help would be great, thanks!

    • That's really odd...can you duplicate those happenings?

Anyway, to answer your question, I believe codes are good for 30 days. Beyond that, you have to contact ASW for a new one (free of charge, of course).

    • Well it happened to me twice last night, I don't know what's going on with it. I'll try again today, but I think the results will be the same.

    • Which version of the CS editor are you using, and what is your current System Software version? If you're using the OSX editor, back away slowly and begin using the Classic editor (or at least until the patch is released). If it's the Classic editor, it might be something conflicting with CarbonLib, or another conflict with the system.

You might as well post your other specs too, RAM, processor & the like. Let us know, and we'll think for a while and hopefully be able to help. 🙂

    • All right, We have:

      Mac OS 9.0.4
      CarbonLib version 1.4
      Coldstone 1.0

Our processor runs at 275mhz, and we have 128mb of ram.

We also have a ton of other software crap on this thing and everything loves to conflict, so I need to figure out what is conflicting (I think/hope that is what is going on).

On our super-minimal set we have 488 enabled extensions. We have 135 which are not enabled.

OK, there's nothing wrong with that. I'd recommend upgrading to 9.1 as a matter of course, but it shouldn't really affect Coldstone if you don't. The RAM is fine, as the Processor speed. How much RAM is allocated to CS, and is Virtual Memory enabled? Give CS as much RAM as possible as a matter of course, but I don't think that VM will matter that much. Hrm.

Please tell me that that was a typo, and you don't really have over 600 extensions installed, even if only 500 are active. Please!

But assuming it's not a typo........ I don't know whether CS will conflict with any of the extensions (I don't know what they are or do, and I don't know exactly how CS plays with the system) but in any case, having that many extensions is definitely not good.

OK, first go into the Extensions Manager and change the set to 'MacOS 9 Base' (I think). Might be a good idea to save your set first, name it something imaginative, such as 'The Totally Suicidal Extension Set' or 'Just Waiting For Trouble'. I'm sure you get the picture. Anyway, reboot with only the base set, and relauch Coldstone. See if you can duplicate any of the aforementioned errors, if you can't then it is almost certain to have been an extension set. If not, it's probably a bug, although one I haven't ever heard of, and believe me, we hear a lot about bugs here. 🙂

After that, you know the drill. Keep adding extenstions to the base set in the EM one by one, rebooting after each addition, and then trying to relocate the problems in CS. This will pinpoint the problem (assuming it's system based), and although slow as hell, might be considered better than the alternative.

It might be a good idea to browse the net for a guide to resolving system extension conflicts, there are a few good ones around, and they'd be of much more specific assistance than I can be. Try a search through google, and you're bound to find something useful.

I'm actually amazed that you can have that many extensions and suffer no other ill effects in any other application, or in the system itself. I'd recommend turning off most of them just for that problem, but there are other reasons to turn them off. It would free up a great deal more physical RAM, troubleshooting would be easier, software installation wouldn't need you to check as often for extension conflicts, etc.

Anyway, I hope I've helped somewhat. If you still can't fix the problem, I'd recommend dropping a note to Dee about it, as it might be a new bug. Maybe refer him to this thread, or at least give him your system specs.

And although I know this is morbid curiosity........ what extensions do you have, exactly, and why are the so many?!?

    • Well, maybe it was a little bit of an overestimation, I just looked at the info on the Extensions folder, here's a list of my active extensions (Some are folders, some are items within them) :

(I don't think you really need to read all of them, but if you see any that are known trouble makers, please speak up)

Our computer is ancient, I think it was top of the line in mid '96. So things accumulate. I use conflict catcher to make sets, and it does a good job at finding conflicts.

Sorry this post is SO long.

    • I just ran Coldstone again. The "cancel" button in the text box prompting you to save works, but you cannot quit the program. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way....

OK, that list of extensions tells me several things about you, some of which may be mutually exclusive. These are:

      a) - You have one of every laserwriter printer supported by OS 9 out of the box
🆒 - You have installed a USB card on a six year old machine (or have a pre-G3 machine with USB...... nah
      c) - You are a hoarder, who doesn't throw anything away, ever.
      d) - You don't have the time/energy to clean up your System Folder
      e) - All/none of the above.

Sorry if any of that was offensive, but that's what that list seems to imply. Now, since I've never even heard of some of those extensions, I'm afraid I can't really tell you which could be causing the problem. At the moment, though, I'm assuming that half of them really aren't necessary, especially the Laserwriter/USB ones. I'm going to guess you have a Color StyleWriter 2500, and maybe an Epson as well.

OK. now my remedy of using only the base system may be a bit difficult, but I'd try it first and then let me know whether it helps. If not, there are a few things to try:

Trash every extension that is not used by an active application on your machine. By this, I mean an app you use at least once a month. If you have extensions there for supporting, say, Bryce, which you might use twice a year, dump them. Back them up first, maybe, but at the moment they're just wasting space.

Clear out all of the printer and gamesprocket extensions you don't use. I seriously doubt you have a dozen laser printers, as well as numerous trackpads and joysticks from at least three different companies.

Now, go through and dump everthing not vital to running the machine. Don't empty the trash if you feel you can't. but move the extensions/control panes/whatever out of your active system. You may be surprised how much snappier your machine feels once you have removed all the nonessentials, with all of the freed up system memory, and less sharing of processor time.

Now, with your nonessentials removed, try to duplicate your problems with CS. If it has dissappeared completely, then you know what the culprit was/is. If you like, you can start to do the one-by-one extension test to see if it helps, but since you've probably fallen in love with your snappier machine, you probably won't want to. 🙂

And of course, there are two further options: delete all of Coldstone's files, prefs, apps and guides off your hard drive and do a clean install, and/or do a clean install of your system. That should do it.

Now, if after this you've spent the ten or so hours I've outlined trying to fix it, and it still hangs up on you, it's time to send an email to either Dee or Andrew, listing your problem once more. If it hasn't been fixed by now, I'm afraid it's probably a bug, and is the premise of the CS programmers, not humble me and my kill the system routine. 😉

But of course, you could always wait for the forthcoming patch, and hope. But I'd still do the system tests/fiddling, if not the drastic ones. Who knows, it could be something so simple that I've missed it, but that you find within five minutes of tweaking.

Best of luck Shrout! Let me know how it goes. 🙂

    • Lol, lol, lol and lol again.

This is my father's machine, not my own. I have only about 40 extensions enabled on mine.

You should see our garage (just kidding - you wouldn't want to). Indeed, we have had 3 joysticks on here, three mice I think (no trackballs), a colorstyle writer printer (though no more) and we currently have an epson. The Laser printer extensions are probably left over from one of the hard drive transfers we've had, that printer is about seven years gone, and I have no idea why we still have those things. This computer needs to be dragged out, shot and buried in a field somewhere.

Now, if I were to simply put these extensions in the "disabled extensions" folder, would that take care of them? I could simply make a bare-bones set using Conflict Catcher.

Oh BTW, do you think that even though I have "Shared Processor" off in EVN, by disabling more of these extensions, would it smooth things out? I'm in desperate need of speed!

Yes, putting them in the disabled exstention folder would cause them to be, well, disabled, and would achieve the same effect as Andiyar's method, with less hassle. Go for it.

Yes, that disables them, and has the same effect of trashing them. Really, moving the extensions out of their proper folder and then rebooting disables them by default. I merely suggested trashing them, as they really don't seem to be necessary. 🙂

As for your EVN question, it would free up more RAM, which would be nice for Nova. Also, you could try playing with doubled speed (caps lock) on, I do, even on a G3 400 with 320MB RAM. Or you could try turning off a few graphics options, that'll speed it up for sure.

Back on topic though, has disabling helped any for CS?

    • Yus, you would be simpleh amazed at the difference in speed when you pare down that extension list.
