    • Personal Space (ATTN: Andrew)

Thanks to Dee answering a question I was loosing sleep over, I now have a new question.

Okay, we will have the option to enable plugins for our games, but how will we distribute them? There are numerous "free web space" offers out there, but the lag is incredible, some that I've seen even limit file transfer speeds to a sad few kilobytes per second....

Is there any way AmbrosiaSW could offer web space with Colstone as a package deal? It would be nice to have some sort of a link to toss arround in chatrooms and message boards that would take people to a page entirely focused on one game, instead of picking one based on the merrits of the description in the add-ons page. Players would need enough space to store their game, and any add-on files that would be used with it.

One great problem with using the traditional Add-ons page would be that it's not just add-ons for one game, it would be many games, most with add-ons of their own. I'm sure you've allready got a solution for this, but just how much space could any one freeware game get to allow for distribution?

Nothing, but not everyone has it, so distributing games only through Hotline isn't a good idea, and some webspace will probably be required... Although, I sincerely doubt that Ambrosia Software will be providing free webspace to game developers (unless the game is being developed or published by Ambrosia, in which case some webspace may be granted, like they did with (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/~mburch")Matt Burch(/url)).

So what makes you all think they would give you personal space on their professional sever?? Sounds pretty unresonable, go get a job(or a higher payin' one at that)...

    • Do we even have a rough estimate of how big coldstone games will be when they are compiled? Really, unless somebody was hosting their own server of was shelling out big bucks to a dedicated server then I don't see how we could do it.

    • Darkblade: I have hotline, but I have no means of keeping a server online much at all (I have cable and I had a server once but it crashed often)

To chill: Must you bitch about everything anyone says?

I mean this as a package deal, in limited space, with limited bandwidth, with many sponsors (like all the other free web space deals out there)

I can more than afford my own web space, but I lack two things.

      1. The knowledge of HTML. Hey, I know a little basic HTML, and it's not hard to do, but I've got my hands full with work and "beta testing" 😄
      2. Any knowledge of a website where I could go about getting my own website (anyone know a good link? While your at it, anyone know a website where I could try and get T3?)

      Cost means nothing...

Read Andrew's call for beta testers for PoG... It is more than 100 Mb compressed. If you also wish to share graphics files (24 bit), character animations, 3rd party items and NPC's and other Colstone games, plan on having a website(s) in excess of 2 Gb.

One solution is for one person (or company) to dedicate a 10 Mb or so Web page of links to the 'creator hosted' sites. This host site could also contain descriptions/reviews of linked games.

    • Heh... I've got a spare 20GB Hard drive that ain't doing too much... Somebody want to fund a T3 pipe to my apartment? Shucks, for that bit of kindness, I'll even maintain and create the site for all of us. 🙂 Ain't I sweet?

Yes, I am a freelance 2D and 3D artist and 3D animator... Who also happens to play waaay too many games. (75% of all games released for Mac I've played/owned/beaten! So that explains why I am here... Any game that's decent coming for Mac, I'm probably there sticking my nose in, and figuring if I want to mess with it in the future.)

HTML is very easy to learn, and it's worth it, too.

http://www.htmlhelp.com is a place that could help you with HTML, unless you meant a host for your website, in which case http://www.angelfire.com offers up to 50 free megabytes of webspace -- and is very easy for beginners to use, and http://www.geocities.com offers 15 megabytes of free webspace, and it, too, is easier for beginners to learn.

I think I recall andrew saying something about the PoG beta being over 100 megabytes when it's compressed.

    • and still no T3 😞 I know not of it's origon, speed, or means of aquiring, but I've heard it can cost thousands of dollars a month. I reiterare.

What we all need is a place to store our creations, and have some link to it. Not everyone can run a hotline server, and not everyone has hotline (It sucks, that's why)

There are plenty of "free web space" offers out there, but I've tried a few, and the lag was beyond redemption. It was clear that they must be very popular, though there is much to be asked about their bandwidth. Ambrosia has allways stored Add-On files, because they further the popularity of the product. Coldstone related games aren't really add-ons, however.

Perhaps there is some good place out there where we could store large files with bandwidth enough do be downloaded...

::Continues quest for webspace fit for human consumption::

Well, it depends on you. PoG is quite big because it uses plenty of graphic files as well as movies. If size matters for you, just limit yourself in your graphics like in the good old days. I guess that 10-30MB compressed would be a good average.

True. Then again, perhaps Ambrosia might consider hosting a few select games that have higher quality than others. Once people see what can be accomplished with Coldstone, it might encourage them to buy the product.

    • Well, I am going to assume that everybody who creates games will have a registered copy because in the beta, if you try and launch your game it will say it was built with an unregistered version of the editor (which looks pretty bad if you are the author). I am actually very concerned with how we will distribute our games. Angel's Fate is actually divided into 4 chapters, and I am toying with the idea of having each one built and released seperately. That means those poor chaps with dial-up are not left out in the cold.

    • I happen to have extensive knowledge of HTML so I can offer my wisdom. If my dad didn't run a graphics/web publishing company I would not have the benifit of dreamweaver/fireworks studio and I would probably use these:
      Graphic Converter
      Freeway
A Smaller Gif (I actually use this anyways)
Photoshop (use LE if you don't want to spend big bucks. It is pretty much the same as normal photoshop just without the goodies.)
      BBEdit
