    • Too many systems

My Nova TC Factions has run into one small problem in release time. Ok as the thread says 'too many systems' I have 'too many systems' as I have ahem 992 systems and I haven't put them all in yet! I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get through putting stuff in them (they are just placed and don't have anything in them) quickly. If not then sigh I'll just have to do it the LONG way.

Oh I am using the 'Filler' idea from the Non Technical Nova Bible because otherwise I only had about 150 systems. But now I have 992 systems :frown:. If you think I should I'll just have to remove all the Filler systems. Though I don't really want to as that would make the galaxy depressingly small (hey I even thought that the Nova galaxy was small!). I also decided to cut the galaxy in half by placing a supposubdely impenetrable Nebula to get rid of about 300 systems. But the galaxy is still too big :frown:. I want to keep it the same size but I don't want to have to fill it all (ironic that isn't it...).

Oh well evening all i have to get back to work. Now how many spobs is that...

    • I've no sympathy for you, my friend -- Starfleet Adventures has over 1200 s˙sts, most of them with planets, 98% of them taken from Star Trek canon, and 90% of them with spöbs that require dëscs -- and in some cases, bar dëscs. There's no quick and easy way to create them, either -- just patience, dedication, and a lot of free time. (It's taken me over six months just to get the s˙sts with the hyperlinks put in, and I still am working on putting in all the spöbs. I've also only just started writing placeholder text for them.)

If you don't want all to have to fill all those s˙sts with planets, leave 'em empty. There's a lot of empty space.

    • or you could probably get someone to write a "name generator" type thing that will create desc for your planets. You still wouldn't get as good of quality from it though.

    • There is a name generator available already that is EV specific. I think Ben Chess made it, the dude behind EV-Edit. Check the tools section of Ambrosia's site for it. It may be under EVO, though. You would have to add considerably more material to it, though, because if memory serves me their isn't much there.

Unfortunately, there is no quick way to do it. In fact, there shouldn't.. Every part of your galaxy should be personalized and custom made by the designer.. but also keep in mind, 922 systems is a ******** load of systems. As a point of reference, F-25 had 522 systems, at least 50 of which are duplicates of systems to reflect change, and people complained ceaselessly about the vast territory to cover in making trips. Even if the majority of systems are abandoned, that still adds a lot of time for trips.. I'm not trying to criticize you in any way, it's just an enormous area of space and sometimes it's better to go for quality as opposed to quantity.

    • This is true, Bomb. My TC, the Resurgence, is a polar opposite to this large plug - it contains less than 60 systems, but about 40-45 are inhabited, many with 2 or 3 spobs. The result is a compact, exciting TC with no long hyperspace treks.

    • I just really feel a nasty urge to plug the plug I'm working on- its based in our solar system, with all the planets from the sun to Mercury out to Uranus, so there are only really 8 systems we are working with. We've found quite a few places to add more-the lagrange points, moon systems and hyperspace, for example- but it is still going to be a limited number of places- Less than 30, I think. However, most everywhere has at least 4 spobs, many will have a full 16. However, making it all work multiplies the number of systems we actually have by an order of about 16, at least.

Well, best of luck with it, it sounds good. My TC also boasts a (relatively) small galaxy that is more compact and dense in terms of development for the individual planets, as opposed to making it massive and somewhat generic, because there's really only so many ways you can say "Habitable/inhabitable world A is an important/unimportant planet for <government> because of <reason A> and <reason B>. Plus, an interesting/quirky feature is <feature>." The less planets you have the more creative they'll be.

      shrug

      Just my personal belief.

    • Despite the project I'm working on, I feel the same way, which is why writing all these texts for 1000+ spöbs in the Star Trek universe -- many of them mentioned maybe once on one of the shows in a fleeting line of dialogue -- is rather daunting. Fortunately, for this plug, most people are more concerned with flying around blowing up Klingons than reading planetary descriptions.

When I get around to doing my original project (the one Starfleet Adventures was supposed to be a small "learn how to make an EVN TC" project to lead up to doing), that's fully my intent -- small universe, pertinent and important dësc text.

    • What I have done to make life easy is to use the Ev-Names program (I think you can get in on the Nova addons page) and made modifications of it. One produces the names of the Systems inside a Nebula (NGS-) and the other produces names of uncontrolled systems (NCG-). And I then used Ev-Edit to connect all the systems (really and it worked too! No bugs amazingly. A far cry from trying to make Ev plugs with it). So now all I have to do is fill them with content (yeah 'only') so hopefully they will be done by the end of March.

Firstly welcome to the boards, may your stay be long and enjoyable. Secondly, have you ever made a plug with 992 systems? If not then you are yet to find the horror of a terrifying number of systems. Oh and about my message about how Ev-edit had worked. Well as it turns out it decided to randomnly place a bunch of planets in various systems. Curses!

Well as I said I am using the filler idea so unlike F-25 you don't need to travel throug heven a quarter of the systems. they're just there to flesh out the galaxy a bit. Increase it's size. Anyway as for the quality over quantity, don't think this is so in the Read Me i can say "I have 992 systems" because trust me I will NOT be saying that. It might dissuade people from playing. Oh and bomb I checked out your guide. Nice bit of work that and I hope to hear about how you go with your plug.

Also as a point of reference is there a limit to the number of systems you can have? And if so has anyone ever reached it?

It'll be slightly less data if most of the 2048 systems are used to create a medium sized dynamic universe. I like how EVN had the occasional Auroan / Fed border change, though I only see it in the cron and never noticed when playing the game (I need to pay more attention d-: ).

I think players would appreciate and enjoy more a universe that changes from time to time, some due to player's deeds, and some independent of player's deeds. Creating a huge static universe is not cost-effective in terms of developer's effort vs players' enjoyability.
