    • QuickTime... Again

I've been implimenting QT movies into several HTML test documents lately, with great success (see (url="http://"http://saberstudios.evula.net/3dimages/CargomasterSpin.html")here(/url). I've got a present for you in the source code, EVula :p). But unfortunately, the movie files are plain huge in size, and not acceptable and practical as far as using them on web pages. In the animation link above, I've removed the control strip to make the movie function like an animated GIF. But I prefer using QT movies over animated GIFs, so long as I can somehow compress the movies to an acceptable size. The Cargomaster spin movie alone is 600k; way too big. Any tips as to how I can shrink movies to smaller sizes, or are animated GIFs still the preferred choice for website animations? If animated GIFs weren't so grainy, I'd have to problem using them. QT just has my type of quality.

      Live long and prosper.

    • Personally, I wouldn't mind downloading large QT files, but I think there are some utilities that can help you in compressing your files (no links yet, I'll get back to you).

Well, that's just my point... I'm wanting to use QT movies in my web pages in place of animated GIFs (which is why I got rid of the controller strip), but only if I can get them to a small size. Most folks won't want several 500k (or more) QuickTime movies to load every page or two. That would kill any connection under ISDN.

I'd appreciate any of those links. Thanks.

    • What video compression are you using? Cinepak is almost 100% compatible, but really crummy, in that the image quality is pretty poor and file size pretty large for the quality. Sorenson works with most modern versions of QuickTime, with decent quality. The newer versions of Sorenson only work with the newer versions of QuickTime (5+, while I'm only running 4) but, I assume, are better yet.

If you're not compressing it, do so, and be amazed. 🙂

      (EDIT)
You were using the Animation codec. I just tried compressing it with Sorenson...it's a bit darker, a little fuzzier, but it's down to 104K.

All I did was export my movie from MoviePlayer 2.5 (it's old, I know, but my movies don't work on the internet unless I do. I have QT 5, though). I performed no compression that I know of...

That file size is nice. Where can I get Sorenson?

    • I've been meaning to ask you skyblade - How did you get Infnini-D movies to play in browsers? No matter what codec I use, it always shows the broken-movie icon...

      ------------------

    • Oh, I see... you're using multiple movies in one page. Well, I can't really think of anything. Download.com only has one compression utility, and it's on a bad server.

Yeah, that was the exact same problem I originally had... as David Arthur pointed out, Infini-D was deleting a vital resource fork necessary to allow the movie to work in browsers. Read (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum9/HTML/002980.html")this(/url) recent topic to fix that.

Precisely. But the program Weepul mentioned sounds like it might be what I'm looking for.

    • To compress movies:
You can set up compression when you render the QuickTime movie right from Infini-D, which may even fix it up for web use. I don't recall having any problems using movies on the web straight from Infini-D.

What I did to test it was, using and old copy of MoviePlayer 2.5.1 and QuickTime 4, I opened your movie,
Export > Movie to QuickTime Movie > Options... > Settings...
Then I selected my compressor (being Sorenson in this case), Medium quality, keyframe every 20 frames, and limit data rate to 90K/second (which was the default).

To answer your question, "Where do I get Sorenson", it's built into QuickTime. It's just the name of one of the supported codecs. It's not a program.

    • Sweet Weepul... you never fail to impress me. 😉 I tried your method, and got the file down to 40k without losing much quality (just the size I'm looking for). Try checking out the link now... shouldn't take any time to load.

      Thanks for all the help.

      -edit- Make that 35k... -/edit-

Just a note (I saw the link elsewhere, can't rememeber where), on test.html, check the HTML at the end of the ***** tag; you've got a missing >.

Heh, I didn't even know I had BBEdit until yesterday... It and Visual Page have made a sweet combination.

I spent forever trying to find out why on earth the test.html page failed to work! All because I left off that ">"... blast. That explains why Visual Page insisted on inserting two closing body tags, heh. I should delete that file anyway. I don't need it anymore.

One thing I like about BBEdit is that it doesn't automatically insert something that it thinks is correct. Visual Page drives me crazy because of that.

      Anytime, glad to hear that.

    • Try checking out the link now... shouldn't take any time to load.

Mhhhh. You must have used Sorenson II or III (if III is even out), those being newer codecs that are only in QT 5 and higher. I, running QT 4, can't view your movie anymore, since QT 4 doesn't support those newer codecs. :frown:

And that's another lesson - the newer technology you use, the fewer people will be able to view it. (yes, I know I should upgrade! )

      Thanks for all the help.

      Anytime.

      ------------------

    • Yeap, I had options for I and III, so I went ahead with version III.

EVula: You mind taking a look at the QT page I put together again? I inserted some CSS, but can't seem get it to work at all...

    • Scratch that regarding the CSS... it shows up just the way I wanted on my other tower. I guess some type of preference is disabled in Explorer on my own tower, since everything simply shows up as black in the background.
