    • I'm a beginner...any suggestions?


      I need help starting my plug-in career...can anyone out there tell me how to get started?

    • A great start would be to download Res-Edit in the EV Utilities page. This is the better plug-in editor out there. Hard (a little) for beginners but I would still get this one. You could get EV-Edit (another plug-in editor) but it's buggy and does not work well with bigger plug-ins (even smaller ones).

      To go along with Res-Edit you should get the Res-Edit Beginners guide (also downloadable on the EV Utilities page). This guide will help you get started and tell you what you need to make a plug-in. Oh yeah, and it also tells you how to make everything for a plug-in.

      There you go. This should be a good start.

      P.S. The beginners guide will tell you to download other stuff like Schmelta V (a mission editor), a 3D graphics editor (download Mechanisto: on utilities page too), the EV Bible (utilities page) and other stuff you can get from the utilities page.

    • Have you even tried Res-Edit? I don't know why you would use anything else (theres not much else anyway). If you ask everyone else (who knows their stuff about plug-ins) they would say Res-Edit is the way to go.

      EV-Edit is a little easier to figure out but it sucks cuz it is buggy. And then your plugin is gonna suck too. Use Res-Edit and you can start easy with the info I gave you in the above reply.

      P.S. No need to ask "How do you make a plug-in" you now know.

    • Missions are difficult even for experienced plug-in developers. I suggest using Shmelta-V. It crashes very rarely, and if you just back up regularly you have nothing to worry about. Don't bother using Shmelta for dude's and pers's, the Res way is easy anyway.

      I would also recomend making a VERY small expansion plug first to practace. Make a new system, a planet and maybe a station, a new tech, a new ship, a new govt, and two or three missions. Test it until it is bug-free. Release it if you want, but remember the most important thing is the practace. It won't take too long, and you can gain valuble experience that you will NEED in a bigger plug.

      ResEdit or Resorcerer and their appropriate templates.

      EV/O bibles or EV/Obae

      Mechanisto & Mechanisto Helper

      All of these except Resorcerer are in the archives. Resorcerer is $256US.

    • i looked at the evo bible the other day and i couldn't understand a word they were saying! it was all jibberish and why does everything have those two little dots above it?

    • If you get Resourcerer with the annotated templates then it's easier to use than ResEdit with it's templates, there's also an Annotated version of the EVO Bible if you are having trouble with the original one.

    • hmm. Try Schmelta V first. Make a plug that adds a few missions. Then move on to bigger things. You should learn to do missions first.

    • You should definitely use the ultimate EVO tool , EVO Developer's Map

      Awesome in functionality, very stable if you avoid the custom landscapes chooser.

      Clayscape is at (url="http://"http://www.jarfish.com")www.jarfish.com(/url). Awesome in its own way, even on a slowish Mac.

      Schmelta definitely for missions.

      EVO Plug Checker is a must as well.

      Despite what everyone says, EV-Edit is a good way of fleshing out a plug in the early stages. Back up often, though.

    • I just have to add that you should also pick up the ShipWrite prog that roger just released. It's still beta but it hasn't crashed on me yet and makes getting the graphics going much faster.

      Where do I get mechanisto, schmelta v, ev formula calc, evo developers map, and the other stuff you guys have mentioned, its not under EVO addons or utilites.

      Where do I get the ID numbers for the systems in evo and weapons and ships?

      How do I import a graphic for a new ship/stellar/outfit that I am making?

      If you guys could answer those questions asap your efforts will be greatly appreciated.

    • If you're going to make an EVO plug why get the EV formula calc. there's an EV one. For the latest version of EVO Developer's Map go to Pontus's page - look through the webboard for his post about it.
