Starting in the square, where you early found the thief of the book -> go south, two squares.
And then search in the woods. You must cross a river (from north to south), then you are on the right way.

its 3 screens south from were the thief was, yet I think its better to go around, since that route goes through the heart of giant country.

And yes, the more easier way is, from the same square out going: one east, three south, one west.
