The little key that shows up is the key you have to find in order to open the chest to get what is inside. If you are in the original world files, level one - a Scent of Peril - you will have to search around until you find the key. As a hint - you will go across some water on a swing - the key is around there. Look up.
(And before you go too far, make sure you have upgraded to version 1.03 from the website, because otherwise there are some bugs that will cause you no end of trouble.)
