    • EV classic dead?

Does this web board need to be euthanized?

So I came back from my "other" life after a few years of no posts with a new name and what do I see? I see there hasn't been a post for about a month, the mods and administrators have seemed to stop bothering to move EVO and Nova posts even when people are responding to them, and a clear lack of interest.

It's a shame, but life moves on. I don't know, I still haven't had the heart to throw out my old PowerPC with EVC on it. It's just too damn nostalgic. The sheer beauty of its originality; the sounds, the graphics, the storyline, and all the fun to be had (oh the fun). It's interesting to me that there were semi-recent efforts I can see that people made to keep new topics coming but after the 10 year anniversary, the thing seemed to just die all together (In spite of all you devoted fans over all these years).

I remember about a two-month period over one summer when I wasn't able to go out that I decided to do every single thing I could possibly do before I ran out of new things. This involved things like maxing out my credits, starting both rebel and confed missions at the same time to get access to both special weapons and the confed and rebel cruiser, outfitting my ship to its max with 6 cruiser escorts and having a mix of hawks, lightnings, mantas, and patrol ships up to the maximum amount that could be in play based on the games' limits, dominating every system (by means of legit tactics involving space bombs), then relinquishing certain systems' servitude to develop pillar of society and role model status, etc the list goes on. I played it out until I could consider myself at least as good as anyone else out there. loads of fun..that was years ago.

Now here I am; graduated with my bachelor's degree and soon to be working on my master's, building up a server, taking on a few other business endeavors, and still, here I am, posting on this forum. Maybe I should just let it die and acknowledge this simply as a database of all the great discussions we had about this game. If anyone wants, they should feel free to share their old memories with the game. If not, then I'm glad you were all able to move on easier than myself.

If I don't hear anything from you take care guys and girls!

    • Well Ev Classic was technically before my time (Override too) but I have played it in the total conversion port of nova.

I've always just loved the sleek, pointed shapes of the Corvette and Kestrel, with those being my favorite ships in the game for stat reasons also.

I liked how there was no clear "good guy" in the EVC and EVO story lines, unlike in Nova, where everything is black and white except with Frandall.

Sorry if this post does not meet your nostalgic expectations, but, again, I have little experience with the game. Never even dominated any planets.

    • I'd say I'd have to agree that it has been kinda left behind, but that's also very true of the operating system that runs it. And while I may personally like both a lot ( and I play EV on a regular basis on a Mac OS 9 machine ), things do get left behind, which allows for new things to have their time in the spotlight, so overall the lack of activity simply means people have moved on and taken their EV experiences elsewhere.

As for the EVC port, while Guy's port was very good, it simply was not as good as the original (both the speed and how it plays are fairly different). EV was a very fast game, the EVC port wasn't however.

    • I actually have an ancient Mac capable of playing it, and indeed, I do have it. I just haven't purchased it. Personally, I've always preferred EVO to the others, even Nova. Exploring was much more rewarding, the ship balance was excellent, and best of all, Earth is governed by the good guys, which is unique to the Escape Velocity series.

Not true, the Confederation are the 'good guys' in EV, unless you're using some odd definition of good.

No need to apologize, I'm happy to see posts on the classic board.

      Very true.

I love hearing about ppl other than myself holding on to their old macs in spite of the clutter the old things can make!

Well, personally, I never got into EVO or Nova. I played them both on a VERY limited basis. It has been a trend for me to feel like I have utterly master a game (ie. Super Smash Bros. 64, which I actually once organized a cash-prize local tournament for simply because at the time I couldn't figure any other way to pay rent) and then resist their successors.

I typically realize what I have invested into the original and see the added complexity in the following games and know that it would just intrude on my real priorities if I were to take them on. I take my hat off to those who can balance gaming and their mandates because my discipline crumbles when you put a keyboard or controller in my hand.

Well this post is going too long and becoming less and less relevant, I apologize. Thanks for sharing though guys!

Edit: How do you add a your quote to the bottom automatically again?

    • Well, it will truly be sad the day EVC dies. But this is not the day nor time. I haven't been on these boards for a very long time. I, like you retro, have moved on to other things as well. But I still occasionally drop by and try to post and keep it going. The sad part is that EV isn't played as much anymore and EVN has come to take some of it's place. But truly, I will still continue to play all of them long into the future and never forget any of them. Also, this could just be a lull, either long or short, when people just don't play EVC as much. But I'm sure as well that one day people will come back to it, whether it be a few or many, and want to post here. Regardless, I believe it is important that this forum be kept and am willing to donate my pound of flesh a year to keep it that way. Of course, I'm just joking about that. But sincerely, I love this board and always will, and the day it is taken away will be the day I lose a piece of me as well. It sounds dramatic, but very true at the same time. Please never take this board away.

    • I, too, played EVC for a long time and still do. Sure, I use the Nova port and not the original EVC now, but I did start with the original EVC. In fact, EVC was my first Ambrosia Software game and what got me hooked on its successors and other ASW games like Ares, Barrack, Slithereens, and Swoop. In fact, I dare say if it were not for Ambrosia Software games, I wouldn't be as interested in computers today as I am.

Thank you, Ambrosia Software, and keep up the amazing job bringing fun to computers everywhere!

P.S. To have a quote automatically appear is to have a signature. Look around in your control panel, Retro_Renaissance_Gamer, I'm sure you can figure it out.

Yeah, I've noticed people saying things like that on these boards for awhile. It's cool when when games create software designers, programmers, or just people extremely knowledgeable of computers in general.

I'm going to hook my PowerPC back up again relatively soon and post some screen shots. That should be fun. If anyone else can conjure some up that would be cool.

    • I, too, remember EVC being my first ASW game - the game that got me hooked on the EV series as a whole.

    • Didn't you say a while ago in the EVO board, Mike, that EVO was your first? I could be wrong, I at least remember you saying it was your favorite.

    • It is a 13 year old game you know.

Your point being? Remember, Starcraft is 11 years old, and it's still one of the most popular RTSs around.

Nope. 'Twas EVC that was my first. EVO is just my favorite of the bunch. 🙂

    • EVC is/was one of my favorite games ever, back when osX was still in the works I played it a lot. I never can say that I got anywhere, but I enjoyed the game. It's sad that the community is dying off. 😞

Escape Velocity was black and white, only no one agrees which was black and which was white. 🙂 My reading is that Matt originally intended the rebels to be the good guys fighting an evil Confederation, but that in the game he eventually gave us, the opposite is true.

I've got to say, though, that EV Override doesn't really seem to have much moral complexity. United Earth, the Miranu, and the subjugated races are good, barring minor complaints from fringe groups like the Fuzz Liberation Front and Free Huroners; the Voinians and renegades are bad; and so, in a different sense, are all three Strands and the Council, since they've fought a pointless war for no real reason. Nova at least has questions like ‘Should the Polaris have destroyed the Colonial convoy?’ and ‘Why are the Aurorans and Polaris enemies?’.

    • I dunno, arguing morality, everything will always seem black and white to somebody.

    • i just started playing again after years of not touching it.

    • With an emulator? Old hardware? Or the Nova port? Sadly it seems, every computer I've ever had that can run Escape Velocity natively has died. Older computers that can't run it without being ridiculously choppy (I've tried :p) are still around, and newer computers that have hardware incompatibilities are too, but everything in between is dead :(.

If you send me $1000 I could give you one of my iMac DV (G3 400mhz, Mac OS 9.2.2, 192MB RAM, 10 GB HD). =P
