    • Help with New Horizons

I have a PC (yes...I know, Ambrosia is MAC stuff) but I'm running a BasiliskII emulator. I've tried to download New Horizons from two different sources (Ambrosia and the creator's site) but both have the same problem. In the data plug, all of the resouce names are gibberish. In othe words, if I try to play it, EV shows systems and ships with names of gibberish.

All other plugs that I have downloaded work fine. I'm playing Final Battle just fine for example, and I have tested Pale too. I'd like to know if anybody else has had this problem with New Horizons either on a real Mac or on an emulator. Just in case one wondered, I unstuffed all of the plug-ins inside Basilisk so I doubt that its winblows fault.

PS-Does anybody still have the Pale Music Plug? The download from the plug's homepage doesn't work and ASW doesn't have it posted. Thanks.

    • hmmm...never seen this one before. during the three years since release, a lot of bugs have been reported, but i've never seen anything like this.
however, i experienced a similar problem once during testing. the ship graphics got all messed up. we found no solution to the problem other than re-installing ev and nh. i'd recommend that.

      take care and enjoy nh!

    • I found the plugin on Ambrosia CD 7, but it has the same problem. I'm trying to give all the resources their proper names, but I can easily find the names for only a few of the systems. Could someone on the original developement team e-mail me either a new data file(stuffed since I use an emulator) or the names of all the spobs and systs in resource order? Please? I've heard a lot of good things about this plugin and would really like to play it. Thanks if you do!

I suppose it would be a feeble request to beg for a version of NH with oblique-angle rendered ship graphics...(akin to MAGMA or EV:N)
The shipyard picts are so pretty, it would be nifty to see that level of detail in regular play.

      (I love this plug. )

    • I hear ya, MickeyBIs! Just about every plugin I d/l'ed works, except for NH! I'll try your suggestion, snorre. Hopin' for the best!
      ---------------------------------------------
Okay, I reinstalled EV and NH...didn't work. I'm using an emulated (Basilisk II) PC. It should work, but it doesn't. Sorry.

    • Are you sure you installed NH correctly? You're supposed to create another copy of your EV folder and replace EV Data, EV Graphics, and so on with the stuff in the NH folder (don't put it in your plug-ins folder). I suspect this is the problem. Other than that I don't think I can help.

I hope you can get it to work; New Horizons was indeed an excellent plug-in for EV.

I haven't had any problems using Basilisk II with EV; the only problem I've had is with EVO, where large graphics get messed up. But EV should be fine.

    • Thanks, Firebird! I followed the instructions and put all the files in a folder I called "Original Data," then replaced them with the NH files. I landed on Levo and bought a map (just to see if all the system names were screwed), opened up the map, and it was as though the entire screen (within the borders) was white with long strings of characters. Same thing with outfit descriptions. I know the file size when d/l'ed was around 13 or 14 MB, not the 19.5 MB version reported on another thread.
I just realized the version I d/l'ed is 1.0. I don't know if it was updated or what, but if someone has or has seen a newer (19.5 MB) version, it wasn't put on the addons page or the New Horizons website. Right now, it's completely unplayable. I also noticed that the long strings of white characters (those that are barely readable) are made up of parts of outfit/ship descriptions, comm dialogue, and mission dialogue/info.

Hmm...funny. I think I've seen this problem before when I had memory problems (I'm sure you tried increasing allocation already), but that's about all. The only other explanation is probably what you suspected -- file corruption.

If I get a free minute with EV (not often), I'll see if I have the same problem, and I'll upload my copy somewhere if it's okay.

Do you mean the Pale Intro plug? That's the one with the music in it.

I put it up at (url="http://"http://cs.paching.com/paleintro.sit")http://cs.paching.com/paleintro.sit(/url)

      It should work.

    • I hope you find it uncorrupted, Firebird. I did try decreasing and increasing the memory, to very little effect. Increasing it did allow me to use my (tab-key) targetter, whereas before it didn't work at all! Also, Levo now has a landing pict and sounds, yet when I click on the news, part of the news is screwed. I did see something amusing, though! Ya know how Cap'n Hector is usually seen in a ship? Well, here he's in an asteroid! I went after him and tried firing on him (to no effect, I know), only to get the Levo Militia angry at me (they killed me obviously, since I'm only in a shuttle). I still think there must be a newer version of NH, or why would someone report it? Still, if there is a newer version, why was it not included on either site?

    • I just took a look at the data file in Resedit and nearly everything was composed of strings of letters, numbers or shapes. Could this be C++?

No. C++ is a programming language composed largely of words. What you're seeing is numerical data; in ResEdit, it is presented it two forms. The middle stuff (numbers and letters) is the data in hexadecimal -- a number system based on 16 instead of 10 like you're used to. The stuff on the right is the same thing, but in ASCII -- that is, the numbers are comverted to characters. The stuff on the left is the list of, um, numbers that determine where everything is (it's just like a numbering system, much like the numbers of the questions on a test). Most of this is pretty apparently meaningless and difficult to understand unless you paste in the EV ResEdit Templates, which come with the EV Bible. Then, if you read the EV Bible and look at the much more readable data, you'll understand. You should really try it sometime.

    • This is after I pasted in the templates! I've looked at other plugs and they seem fine. It's only NH that I see this.

    • Hmm, I just looked at my copy of the NH data file, and they've got the same disease. Sorry that I misunderstood you.

Before my Mac blew up, I did have an uncorrupted copy of the plug (I played it); this version appears to be one I downloaded after that.

Unfortunately, that means I can't be of any help.

    • Sounds like we all need to have a talk with NH's creator, doesn't it? Or at least have someone go through and "clean it up." Someone around here has got to have an uncorrupted copy that could be uploaded. Perhaps one of us could put up an "All Read" request on the board. You'd think these plugs would be gone over with a fine-toothed comb before putting them up, wouldn't you?

      -Ace 😄

    • I started fixing outfit and weapon data, but the corruption of the plug also messed up Resedit, it would choke whenever I tried to copy things to another file. After a little while I just gave up. I too would love to see someone post an uncorrupted file, even if it did mean a long d/l time 🙂

PS: Firebird, I found the music on a zip disk for the old mac downstairs, but thanks 🙂

It could be that it was corrupted after they put it up...there must be somewhere I got it from so that it was okay when I had my Mac.

    • I have the exact same problem.. Anyone have contact info for the authors of NH? It was my favorite plug...

The sityes are all down except this one, and is has no e-mails http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/...9/evnhplug.html

    • Considering this post is four years old, I'm sure the contact info has changed. Someone still here might have an uncorrupted copy. Good luck, I hope you find one.

Dear me. It's heartwarming to see that people still use the plugin that Aidan, Snorre, Kevin and I spent so much time on. On the other hand it makes me feel rather old.

Anyway. I have all the necessary files, BUT I have to say that although NH should work relatively problem free as long as it gets its memory requirements (minimum 23 MB) met, there MIGHT be conflicts if it's run on a PC emulator, which we never tested it for. I haven't tried that so I can't tell. I have the EV Tuner plugin in the plugin folder when I play - not sure if it'll make a difference or not.

If desireable, I'll email the thing to whomever wants it, if there's a lot of demand I'll find somewhere on the web to put it up for download.

It's odd though. The version on Ambrosia's CD should work fine. My files are the real mccoy, though, so to speak.

I guess I should add that I'm using the NH plugin myself occasionally, on a G4 powerbook running MacOS 10.2.8, EV 1.05. I've never had any big problems, but there sure are some odd colours on the screen when EV first starts up with the NH data files...
