You can with around 2M (at least, less than the price of the Corvette) get an Argosy that can destroy Kestrels (I admit, you have to be a bit skilled). And still carry bulk cargo (100 tons).
This reminds me I did not post my list. So here it goes:
Courier: Shuttlecraft with one or two fuel pods, and maybe one cargo expansion. That way, no need to buy anything before Argosy or 'vette.
Fighter: that's a thoughie, I don't like them, as I can't envision earning my money solely from combat. Let us say Rapier
Warship: Rebel Cruiser.
Freighter: Bulk Freighter. If you're serious about freighting without being able to defend yourself, you might as well use the biggest one, it's not that manned so you can capture one with not that much hassle.
