My best suggestion to you if you're not into heavy star-fighting, is to modify the plug in to give the planet a single wave of 20-30 ships. That should go fairly quickly.

is 'solid as a rock'.... it's been so long since i've done anything else other than
trying to dominate the rock.

If you're trying to dominate "The Rock" (and I assume you're not talking about the wrestler/actor), I think you're working for Artemis and are in the Darksider string.

'Solid As A Rock' is one of the last Darksider missions. For this mission, I used a combination of the Monty Python and Circle of Death tactics (Monty Python: run away from your pursuer and turn back towards him, so you're flying backwards. Fire all primary weapons. Circle of Death: hold the Autopilot and accelerate keys when you have a ship targeted. If done correctly, you will fly off to the side of the ship and begin circling it. Unleash hell. Its turrets usually won't be able to target you and forward-firing guns won't be able to get a good shot.) Using these techniques, it should be a fair bit easier. Not much faster, but easier. Be sure to run away when your shields and armor get low.

There are 60 ships composed of waves of three that defend The Rock. In my new plugs you will NEVER have to face more than 60 when dominating a stellar or spaceport. If you find it is taking too long you can easily use ResEdit to change the number of ships sent out.
