If you are at the point where you can't do anymore missions as a rebel, try the confederate string, or even go for a plug-in like Galactic Scourge. Plugins are game expanders. I would suggest downloading the EMPIRE plugins from the addons page, those show EV in a totally different perspective.

Well, they could be either. Some plugins merely extend the game, some pretty much make it into a whole new game.
