It's like falling off a log.

Controls: accelerate button, your port and starboard turning buttons, your "face in direction reverse of velocity" button, primary & secondary fire, target select button (some weapons benefit from this), "target nearest hostile" button, autopilot (points you in the direction of target), eject button, map, player/ship info, mission info, hyperspace jump, F1-F4 target planets, cloak (optional), etc.

Get missions in bar or BBS, complete their objectives to earn cash (and other things sometimes), spend cash on upgrades.

After getting a combat rating greater than harmless, hang around bars on planets that belong to the main government that you want to join and you should get a mission that involves delivering some documents for that government, doing so will get you into one of the two main strings.
