This is a copy of a post I put on the Nova board.

there were people (like myself) who were cruising through websites, Mac Addict CD's and other wierd places, who found this strange game called Escape Velocity. They Installed it expecting another shoot em up asteroid game and found themselves thrown into a wild universe with a white box called a shuttle craft. The game hooked thousands in this manner.

Then Ambrosia did it again with Escape Velocity Override. Once again there was that same feeling of suddenly being thrown into a huge universe with a pile of Scrap from sombody's back yard. Everything you learned In Escape Velocity was changed. You had to do it all again. Players of EVC, for the most part, loved it.

but nova, for me, just doesn't capture that feeling. I've been there before. Nova has a great engine, but thats all thats seems new. People who found nova first will get that nice, new feeling, but it is lost on me.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I personaly like EVO Best, But that doesn't mean I don't like EV anymore, I love it. I just don't play it as much as Override.

    • The outfits and the graphics were great, but that's almost expected with eight years since the first one. The story was good, but it just lacked something, I agree with you there Captain Phillips. The story line was in depth and all the plots were intertwined but overall feeling of the universe being this big desolete void were you could explore and find anything was kinda lost. Don't get me wrong I still ike the game.

Call me old fashioned, but EVC and EVO were still my favorites.

we share the exact same opinion then.

    • Well said. The closest word I can use to describe this "feeling" would be the immense "immersiveness," something I definitely got out of both EVC and EVO, and most of the greatest plug-ins -- notably EVGE, Final Battle, the Frozen Heart, and F-25 (there were others, with varying degrees of this quality but generally great). What you say about the big-ness and the adventurous feeling of exploring the void though, is just what made these games amazing.

EVN was about half as good in this respect the first time I played it through, but it got old pretty fast. The storyline certainly hurt. So did the fast pace of gameplay (EVO didn't have this at all), a shortage of challenges, the faster jump times, and a galaxy that wasn't nearly as large as we hoped it would be (maybe b/c so much of it is made of the empty Wraith or Vell-Os regions). Sure, EV lacked the storyline, but don't dare tell me the Frozen Heart was missing anything (well, maybe a little in the graphics realm, but even those weren't too bad at all).

Still, I bring that up because FH2 is going to make me happy that I contributed my $30 to at least a decent finish to the EV series.

Yeah, and I can remember when I first played and finally got enough money to get a Defender. Then I remember getting blown up constantly and hating myself for getting a damn Defender. Ahh, the good ol' days! 🙂

    • I still remember talking at work (for about 2 weeks) with one of my supervisors about how close I was getting to finally having enough to get my first Kestrel! I had a load of fun flying my Corvette and saving for that ship! 😄 Have a Blessed Day, Mike

I have pleasant memorys about stuff like that too. Saving millions and working like the dickens to have enough to buy myself a Rebel Destroyer once defeated the alien cruiser. Y'know, The RD is wbetter than the kestrel but it costs as much as a corvette. Quite a good deal.

My Lone Cruiser plugin is up if you want it. 😉

    • Yes, the Rebel Destroyer is better than the Kestrel, especially considering the price.
However, if you take the time to get a Kestrel, you will find that there is no ship better for making money. Just follow the instructions written in the Kestrel Owner's Manual.

If you have just purchased this ship because it costed alot, you're an idiot.
However, Atinoda thanks you for your bussiness anyway.

To pay you back for this rip-off, we have included a set of instructions to make your money back within a few days.

      A) Sell your Lightning Fighters.
🆒 Go to a Pirate infested star-system of your choice.
      C) Disable and capture 2 Lightnings, thus adding them to your Bay.
      D) Repete points A-C untill you are filthy rich.

Note: All time increments are in-game time.

Where did you get that, or did you just make it up? If you did do the rest of the manual. and then put it on the crons. 😉

    • I remeber when I first saved enough money to buy a courior, full of excitment I went out to do battle with my new ship. Bravely surging foward I challenged the first pirate defender I met, and prepared to smash his puny hull with my massive laser turret. I think lasted about 15 seconds. 😄 I never bought a courior again.

Yeah, I had a similar experiance. I bought my ship and armed it with an extra pair of laser cannons, I then proceded to get myseylf plastered by pirate argosys. I thought I was tough because I licked a shuttlecraft without taking any hits, therefore I was ready to tackle argosys. Boy was I stupid.

Heh, surely you never forgot that a stock shuttle is laser less after that. 😉

I thought I got the luck of the draw on one of my first profiles: I found a derelict argosy. Course, it was a pirate setup, and I got nuked.

I remember the first time I saw a derlict. It was a Derlict Corvette. I shot it down because I thought it was an enemy.
Then I learned that Derlicts were for boarding and robbing, so I hopped over and boarded that Courier and got attacked by pirates. It takes a while to get used to the EV universe.
