Is the a limit to how many escorts you can have? I'm talking about the ones you captured, not that ones you hired.

However, fighters are not escorts. In the standard game you can have 2 Hawks + either 2 Lightnings or 4 Mantas, or 4 Patrolships (depending on what you are flying). This is in addition to up to 6 escorts (and their fighters, if any).
Thus, if you were in a Cruiser with a Hawk bay and you had 6 Cruiser escorts who got angry there would be you + 2 hawks + 6 cruisers + 6*4 fighters + whoever got them angry (assume 1 ship) = 1+2+6+24+1=34 ships vaguely under you command.
However, there is a maximum of 36 ships of any kind allowed on the screen at a time. If there are, say, 5 enemy ships, then 2 fighters cannot be launched until two ships are destroyed (not disabled).
If you are using a plugin which gives you more fighters then you can more hit this limit.
Oh, there is also a maximum of 64 shots and 8 beams on the screen at a time.
Finally, you can have mission based escorts (e.g. escort freighters to Manos). You control them even less than hired or captured escorts. These do not count against your total of 6, but go away upon completion of that mission.
