    • Theory behind interstellar flight/hyperjump?

Well, being that kind of guy (geek?) i was wondering what the principles behind the hyperjumpin EV are? I know there's probably not an official explanation, i mean, that being just a little 'too' much detail, but i was wondering if anyone is interested, can they come up with a plausible explanation behind the theory of the hyperjump?
(the thougt, though always floating in the deep reaches of my mind, surfaced when i visited the website for that pc space game EVE - it explains it jump theory, jump gates and wormholes - but i dont think thats how EV is, or would be)
I never did like the idea of wormholes and all that.
Is it like that of Star Wars (the books at least), the ship enters into Hyperspace, which is outside of normal space, a plane where there is no time, etc. etc. and then drops back in at the designated location or what? Or, like star trek, is hyperspeed simply light/faster than light speed - and id so, than how does the ship manage and make it?
🙂 impossible, overdoing it question? Maybe, since EV needs no explanation on such a thing, but i was just wondering. Be happy for your thoughts!

    • Well, the way it happens, is that you press this big j key, a big whoosy sound is heard and a little green blip tells you you've moved a few hundred light years south of the M45

    • I believe that doccumentation packaged with EV states that there exist several levels of "hyperspace" outside our space, and the ship travels quickly through to make intersolar jumps.

EVN may explain this in greater detail, and I believe EVO skips over the topic completely.

    • every sci-fi has its own explanation for its ftl travel, most of them with huge, glaring flaws. here are a few of them:

      honor harrington:
hyperspace layers exist on top of normal space. with a significant expenditure of energy (exponential in the layer number) you can climb to a higher layer. each layer has its own time an space so that travelling at sublight speeds within a layer result in superluminous speeds in sufficiently lower levels (with our space being the lowest).

      midshipman's hope:
there exist n-waves (waves of some odd form of radiation) which travel faster than light. by using some pretty cool drive (or, in the case of the fish, some pretty cool metabolic process), one can "bond" oneself to the n-waves, travelling as fast as they do.

      life probe:
there are two streams of time, one flowing from the start to the end of time, the other flowing from the end to the start of time, and each one has its own set of matter travelling in its direction. somehow, this realization allows you to do all kinds of crazy stuff, including travelling faster than light. further, we are part of the matter going the wrong way, and we are a whole lot closer to the big bang than we are to the gnab gib

(insert explanations of bistromathic drives and infinite improbability drives here, i have to get to class)

    • No, it's like star trek. If anyone has noticed, time passes when you hyperspace. It is, showing this evidence, only a really, really fast pace that uses a lot of extra fuel. If it used another plane... Well it still could, but you could make an arugment that you wouldn't lose any fuel because it would be like manuevering normally, just in a different plane.

I readed the document you wrote. I liked it, but many weapons were missing. Tractor Beam, Repulsor Beam, Plasma Siphon, Emalgha Cannon/Turret, Turreted Rocket, and SAE Module. Atleast the SAE you MUST put inside. It is just that often used weapon.

Do you know what? You start shoving stranger and stranger skills. You write Youre welcome in my native language. Though if its Finnish and not Hungarian, there is no c after ä.

    • Well, considering that hyperspace and warp drives are not allowed by the laws of physics...

Specifically, faster-than-light travel is forbidden by Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, as long as an object has mass. A warp drive that would create a space-time bubble big enough to hold a ship requires more energy than there is in the entire universe. Keep in mind—even if we did develop new unified field theories about the universe, Einsteinian physics, in all likelihood, would still hold true, just like Newton's laws of motion still hold true in the vast majority of cases.

However, the laws of physics do allow for wormholes, so if you could artificially generate a wormhole and control where its end is produced, you could traverse great distances quickly. And if you could figure out a way to convert a ship and its passengers into a stream of tachyons—theoretical particles that can move faster than light and have no mass, if they exist—you could consequently move faster than light. However, you would be moving backwards in time, and you'd also need to devise some mechanism to reintegrate all the tachyons back into all the complicated structures they originally were, not to mention input a large amount of energy just to slow the tachyons down when you want to land somewhere.

Right. But it's still nice and convenient to have a speedy form of transportation in the game to make those shipping deadlines. 😄

      Regards,
      Solel
