    • One Dumb Question

Ok, I have played EV for years, and finally have hit the point of boredom. I always hear about plugins and decided to download one finally. My question is this: Now that I have downloaded the plug-in, do I just put the files in the EV folder? Do I then take out the old coresponding files as well? Any help would be great. Sorry this is such a lame question, but I'm retarded when it comes to this upgrade stuff. Thanks for you time.

Welcome to the boards reefer157! Using plugs is so simple anyone could do it. Download the file and unstuff it. You probably want to look at the readme files (If any) that come with the plug, especially for large plugs, but it's usually not neccesary.

The important files are the ones that that have an icon looking a little like a puzzle piece. These are usually called whatever the name of the plug is called. (Such as Realm of Prey)
For some plugs there will be more puzzle shaped files which might say, Graphics, Sounds, Data, etc. etc. You want to take all of the puzzle-shaped pieces and put them into your "Plugins" folder. (I think that's the name of it, whatever it is, it's located inside your Escape Velocity folder.)

After that you're ready to go! But you should also know that some larger plugins will require more memory before you can run them. I'm assuming you know how to do this since you do own a Mac. Just go ahead and increase Escape Velocity's memory.

But before you start playing, just know that not all plugs are as good as the next. If that plug you downloaded isn't working for you, try and get a different one. If you've got time, you can even learn to use ResEdit and make your own! πŸ˜‰

    • It's highly recomended that you read the read-me that comes with a plugin. Most plugins are simply placed in the "EV Plug-Ins" folder but there are a few exceptions. Arena, for example, is designed to replace the original EV data files.

Like Penguin said, be sure to increase EV's memory allocation, or you'll be back her asking about a strange error you get upon loading the game.

    • Thanks guys, I think I have it figured out now. Blast On!!!

    • Ok, I'm back. Guess I didn't get it figured out after all. I did what the read me said to do and moved all the files to the EV file and took out the old ones. Now, I double click on EV to play and it gives me the start up screen and it almost finishes loading when it kicks me out and takes me back to the desktop. Is this the memory issue you were telling me about? I am running an Imac with 192 MB of memory. It has OS X.03 on it and I run a 9.0 simulator to run older programs like EV that weren't made for OS X. It works for original EV, like just before I did the Plug in conversion, now it won't work. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone.

    • Yep, that means you need more memory. You probably know this, but:

Click once on the Escape Velocity icon. Go to File. Go to Get Info. Go to Memory. See what works. πŸ™‚

      Good luck!

Have you ever actually seen a big block ties to a ball and chain? And you forgot to mention that the blob is actually falling. A blob just sitting there on the ground, even while tied to a ball and chain, doesn't fall very fast. Does it? πŸ˜‰

And using cheats doesn't neccesarily make the game boring. Some cheats are fun to watch while others might let you just do the impossible, which can be very fun. Imagine raiding all of Sol and than using a giant flamethrower on all of the attacking ships! You can't say that wouldn't be fun... (Everyone should not say, "pp, it wouldn't be any fun*")

reefer157:Welcome to the boards(even though you've heard it already ;)). From what you said, it sounds like you only put the plugin in the "Escape Velocity" folder, not in the "EV Plugins" folder, and removed all the data files that were there. If the plugin is not a total conversion of the game, then it should not replace all the data. Put simply, unless the readme tells you to, do not remove the files "EV Data", "EV Graphics", etc. EV will not work with out them!!
Also, we could help you better if we knew what plugin you are trying to use πŸ˜‰

Yes, I think that was enough bolded commands πŸ˜›

"Fun" is a relative term. If someone has fun cheating in a game, then they have fun. That's the purpose of a game, after all...

That said, cheating in multiplayer games is horrible, but since EV isn't multiplayer, there is nothing wrong with cheating if you want.

Why is it horrible? Because youre cheating real people?

Cheating in single-player only effects a single person, and it is assumed that if that person is cheating, they are doing so because they enjoy it (it's fun). Cheating in multi-player games effects many people, and the chances are pretty slim that everyone in there enjoys the fact that a single person is cheating, which causes it to be less fun.

    • are we talking like a pale kind of addon? if so just copy all the files in the add-on download folder and stick 'em in the add-on folder in your game folder.
or, you could just read the read-me file πŸ˜›
