    • How can I get a cloaking device...

without actually doing the rebel missions for it? I'm playing EVGE and used the Mission Control (set) plugin to set the misbits, so I could kinda continue where I "left off." Now I can't get the cloaking device. I cleared all the misbits for all the rebel missions, yet when I go to the bar, I get the Astrodyne Outpost Recruitment mission instead of the Covert Ops #1 Mission. Is there a plug somewhere that might allow me to buy a new cloaking device or some way to get the one I'm supposed to have?

Well, if you know a thing or two about ResEdit, you could temporarily change the cloaking device outf so that it has a mission bit of -1 and a tech level of 1. Then you'll be able to buy it anywhere with an outfitter.

    • I know precious little about ResEdit. I did use EVEdit to open up a copy of the plug and found the cloaking device listed. I also found the tractor beam listed as a weapon. In fact, isn't that how it's listed after you first capture it? I did d/l "freecloaking" plug, but according to the EV Plugin Auditor, it "modified the item already modified by EVGE." Even with cheat plugs like "Availability Cheat" or "Cord's EV Cheat A," I can never find it in the outfitters. I guess I'll just have to go without. Such is life.
Thanks anyway, Firebird! BTW: I got Ares up and running! Apparently there are three "pieces" in the Ares installer. All I did was install them one-at-a-time! Unfortunately, games like "Harry" or "Mars Rising" only come in one large piece. Therefore, I cannot install them.

      Thanks!

    • I don't want to sound stupid, but what is EVGE?

A large plug-in called 'EV Game Expander'.

Well, I wouldn't let its complexity scare you -- it can be a surprisingly simple program. If you can get on AIM when I'm on (not often, unfortunately), I might be able to walk you through it. You might also try reading some of the guides that are out there on ResEdit, as it is a very powerful tool -- and essential if you ever plan on making a plug-in.

As far as the installation of those other games go -- what exactly do you mean by "pieces"? I never had a problem with any of that; probably because I'm using hard disk files like most of the Basilisk tutorials suggested. Also, Mars Rising won't run anyway since it's PPC only. I have gotten Harry to work though.

Well that sucked. Everything I typed didn't make it...

Anyways, as I was going to say:

Most people are scared away from EV-Editing with ResEdit when they open it up and are hit with a wall of text. I believe the templates come installed in the EV Data and EV Graphics files but creating a new plugin requires that they either be pasted into the new file or into the Res-Edit preferences file (Which isn't a wonderful idea if you're going to be editing plugins for multiple releases of EV, EVO, and/or EVN.) I'm sure there's something we can point people to that explains the use of templates.

    • When I say "pieces," I mean all of the files in the Ares package. When installing, instead of "Easy Install," choose "Custom Install." There you will see three files: 1)Ares 1.2.0, 2)Net Sprocket 1.1.1 and 3)68K Network Items. I guess I could've left out the last two and only installed the Ares file since I'm not on a network. Still, I've had no luck installing Harry, and that was/is one of my favorites. As for the cloaking device, I thought I had set all the misbits, but was recently offered the "Covert-Ops" mission, took it, and now have the cloaking device. EVGE is a great plug! Lotsa gov'ts, lotsa aliens, and lotsa lotsa pirates! I've done the Polaris missions and would like to begin the Proximan missions, but have no idea where it's offered. I know that it's offered from another ship (I'm guessing a disabled Proximan ship), but just where might that ship be found? Usually when asked (on a planet/station) to find a disabled ship, that ship can be found either right next to that planet/station that asked you to find it, or right next to the planet/station one jump away. These planets/stations have enough ships to fight off someone trying to dominate them, but never do they have just one to go find their disabled ship. Strange, huh?

Yeah, it's strange. In this case (spoiler alert!) the particular ship isn't known to be missing, because, well, it's not supposed to be disabled but actually destroyed (the Proximans self-destruct their ships so that their technology can't fall into others' hands.

But, since it'll take you forever to look otherwise, you can find the disabled ship in the Talaria system (in Orion space) if you land and take off enough times. It's actually a pers. Also, it can only appear if you started a new pilot file for EVGE or used the Captain Scumdog one, because otherwise, the EVGE pers's won't show up (if you've been seeing Alien ships from time to time with strange names, like Alien Mothership or Alien Raider, you should be fine).

As far as that whole installing things in emulator things go, I don't really understand why you've been having problems, unless you're still trying to install stuff to your real hard drive.

    • I took a look at some of the other posts about the Proximan missions. So now I'm in the Talarian system, landing and taking-off, again and again. I've seen several Proximan scoutships, but none were disabled. I did use the Captain Scumdog pilot file, and I do see alien ships with "Mothership," "C&C; Command ship," and "Raider," so I guess I'm fine. I did the "destroy the Alien Portal" mission, so all we have to do is clean-up the rest of the galaxy. Fortunately, the aliens that were left on this side of the portal tend to seek me out, which is fine with me. If the aliens, the pirates, the Confeds, and the Orion Union...want to give their lives for their governments, I'm all too happy to oblige! BTW: Have you ever had this happen: Just as my escape pod is ejected, my ship suddenly turns itself 90 degrees! This doesn't happen each time I get destroyed, just sometimes. As for Harry, I've tried installing it on "MacHD," but I keep getting a "not enough space...need to free up X amount of space" message. What should I do?

    • You can get a cheat.

(This message has been edited by kc3 (edited 09-23-2002).)

    • I did cheat, sorta. I put in "Mission Control (clear)" and cleared the "Covert Ops" misbits, removed the "Mission Control" plug, went to the bar and was given the first part (take docs to Palshife), did that, was given the second part (take troops to Luna), put the "Mission Control (set) plug in and set the misbits for the rest of the "Covert Ops" string. So, now I have the cloaking device. I did the same thing for the Proximan missions. I went to Talaria, landed and launched, many times, and never once saw the Proximan ship. So, I used the MC set plug to set the misbit saying that I did the mission, went to Alpha Proxima, landed, and from there the missions continued. I don't like to cheat like that, but sometimes it's necessary. Lemme tell ya, that one Cassiopean mission (where you have to destroy three Confed Cruisers) was a toughie! I knew the mission was to destroy only the three cruisers, and if I wiped out any other Confed ships, something would screw up. So there I am, in the Cassiopean system (less three Confed Cruisers), with a crapload of Gunboats and Patrol Ships after me. I decided the best thing to do (before trying to dock at Station Denigrada) was to hyper to the next system over and back again, then dock. No problem.
Hey, kc3, I went to your site and d/l'ed your "freecloaking" plug, but, according to "EV Plugin Auditor," it modified the outfit that EVGE already modified. So, I took it out and did as described above. BTW: Great looking site, kc3!
