Wow, tough question. EVO is definitely a distant third. Beyond that, it gets fuzzy.

As something of a small time programmer/plugin developer, I have to say Nova's engine really rocks, like Zeppelin rocks. Definite advantage there.

In graphics... I don't pay a huge amount of attention to graphics. Nova's are clearly superior, but not enough to make it a factor, as far as I'm concerned.

The story is fuzzy. EV's was short and simple, whereas Nova's are long and detailed. Nova tends to push you into a storyline early, and doesn't have much focus on combat at all. They both have really good points. Constantly being some superhuman in Nova got a bit odd, and I found all the endings - except, ironically, the Fed ending - rather depressing in some inquantifiable way.

Ultimately, I don't think I can really choose between the two, they're both really good. I would certainly say I don't have any problem with the thirty dollar investment into Nova, though.

I know this is the EV board and all, but I think Override has it's merits. Personally, the graphics aren't something I care a great deal about. Like sound, graphics aren't the strong point of either game, I hate the lurid colours on the Zidagar and Igadzra ships but beyond that, I don't see the problem. And who's to say that star ships wouldn't be made of plastic?
To be honest, EV and EV:O are as boring as each other once the mission strings are complete, although there's slightly more variation than just hunting pirates and killing confeds/rebels in EV:O (i.e. the Zachit, raids against the Voinians, raids for your strand).
I'd have to say that EV:O has the longer lifespan too, it's a while since I played EV but I don't remember there being a whole lot of mission strings, whereas EV:O has lots. Fundamentally, a lot of players will play EV:O through at least three times, once for each strand, whereas I've only played EV through twice.
Also, one of the things I like the most about EV:O is that you actually change the galaxy (new stations built, stations destroyed, planets annihlated etc), whereas after finishing EV's central objective, the universe is exactly as it was at the beginning of the game.
I loved EV back when I started playing it, but I think EV:O does improve on it in a number of areas (although graphics obviously isn't one of them), isn't that the point of a sequel after all?

I was more than ready to cry after my first few days with Nova. All that hype, all those hours sitting dazed in front of the Nova board, dying for some new little blurb of information just to keep me satisified until the next little tidbit was released.

The weapons, storyline, universe, plot, writing, everything but graphics, AI, and engine were simply.... Well, not to disrespect ATMOS, but if I had set my dog to smashing her tail on the keyboard, we would have ended up with a better game.

If I can hijack this topic for my own question...

Thinking along the lines of what cable_guy said about the (Nova) Rebellion having a dark side at the end, how would you guys react to a plug where all of the governments had both a good side and a dark side? I have half a plot and even a little tech hammered out for a TC plug I want to do after AI, but I'm not sure how everyone would react to a plug that didn't really have any clear "good guys" or "bad guys." I've got one government fighting for a good cause using questionable tactics, two groups fighting a war either could stop if they were willing to bend a bit, though both are fighting for semi-reasonable causes, and another that's fairly imperialist. Any thoughts on how that would go over?

I personally prefer storylines which have a defined "bad guy" and "good guy" (or at least sides where the player can choose for himself which side is the good guy). I don't know about anyone else, but I like having plugs / games which begin with a thick plot between the forces of good and evil.

The point is, you're going to have to, because they're all going to be unclear - it isn't going to be like in standard EV, where (at least, in the majority opinion, not everyone's) it's pretty well defined for you that the Rebels are good and the Confeds are evil. In my stroy, you'd be presented with a number of questionable groups, such as one that's fighting for self preservation but is coersive to small fish and uses other odd (or evil) tactics; one that's fighting a war for a good reason, but one that could be solved without the war; or one that could avoid a war if they weren't so set in there ways, but would rather fight than give up a small point of principle even temporarily - you'd have to sort out for yourself which of those were "good" and which were "evil". In EV, EVO, and EVN it's fairly well defined for you who's "good" and who's "evil" in most cases.

I would love to finally have a plug that resembles human nature. Everyone has a dark side, except games seems fairly 2D in their representation of human nature. Go ahead and create it.

You people just can't see through the Rebel lies and His Burchness's obscurity in documenting the Confederation infractures. I am not going to get into a debate, but if you examine the game thoroughly, it is clearly evident that the Rebels are an aggresive tyannical force and the Confeds are not.

I noticed noone even mentioned EVO... that's good. Hi, I'm new here.. anyway- I haven't played Nova, but if it's as dissapointing in the area of plot as Override was, then EV is still the best. I've had it since it came out and I'm still hooked. If repetitive missions and making a lot of money gets boring, you could allways start coquering, and, once that inevitable gets old, there's actually a plot... Several of them in fact. So far I count about 5 or 6 gov'ts, agencies, whatever to join... Unless I can play Nova for 3 years and find something new every time I play, then there's no contest. As far as I'm concerned, plot outweighs any graphics or battle sim's. So I guess it's EV hands down.

haven't played Nova yet, but i started playing EVO and (even though it did seem pretty cool) it made me want to go back to EV and do everything in it that i possibly could before i went on to play the others...if that makes any sense

Also, I still think that the ship set for EV was the most evenly spaced and fairly priced of all of the EV games. EVO had a severe lack of ships immediately available to you, and the only good ship in EVN (in my opinion - lets not turn this into a "the best ship is..." topic) is the starbridge. It looks cool, and has good ability. The rebel destroyer is the best ship across the whole series; fast, powerful and probably the coolest looking ship ever (even if it is just an argosy with a different paint job). The EV:N ships are too cheap and easily got; with EV there was a genuine sense of achievement if you get to a more powerful ship, and it meant that the game lasted much longer.

Well, thats what I think anyway.
