    • Cheap, Difficult but [Good] Strategy

Has anyone ever worked for the Confeds until you get the particle beam, and then become a Rebel? You can have a Rebel Cruiser with a particle beam, so cool. Unless maybe this is only possible in corrupt data files...but try it, if you have the time. 😄 I did it accidentally, actually, I was trying to do the Confederate mission string, then I sort of accidentally 'fired' (destroyed, yes :D) on a Confederate ship...Or maybe I just defected. In any case, then I worked for the Rebels and it was cool.

    • The particle beam wastes too much fuel to be practical, if you ask me.

    • But it's worth it!!! To say that you've done it! Well, perhaps not, but it can be useful while in pirate-fighter-infested space. Plus, it does quite a bit of damage.

    • Personally I dislike weapons which consume fuel, it's why I avoid the tractor beam and repulsor beam in EVO but I like using the tractor beam in EV. Granted, the damage is great, but I don't like just sitting around waiting for my ramscoop to slowly recharge my fuel. Secondary weapon as a GUN I prefer the Neutron Cannon.

Neutron Blasters in my opinion, are a waste of space. You can fit four laser cannons and two javelin pods in less space than it takes to equip one Neutron Blaster, and the former combination is vastly more effective.

I rather like having the Particle Beam aboard, even if I rarely use it. It takes up no space, so it doesn't hurt. Besides, if you are doing your fighting in a particular system, you won't need to hyper out anyway.

    • Heh, you're talking about inpractical weapons? Instead of wasting 140 tons of my space on 4 neutron blasters (with shots slower than some ships), I figure it's more useful to get a pair of javelin pods (decent range too). Or get a pair of bomb racks. Of course, if you have a plug-in, there are other fun weapons to get (the mass driver's much more practical in EVGE, for instance).

    • Hm....I guess the particle beam is really only useful in major battles or for repelling interceptors. I.e. domination, etc.

    • Particle Beam, Mass Driver, and Neutron Blaster are next to useless, IMO. The first one uses too much fuel (but I supose if you are in a huge battle you'll have time to recharge), and the last two are too slow.

Javelins, as somebody mentioned, are great. The pods are cheap, and the missiles are free (you can get them off pirate Clippers).

    • I shun secondary weapons most of the time, but I have been known to use guided missles sometimes.

    • All hail the torpedo, proton turret, laser cannon combination. In my modified Corvette, I can regularly take out a Kestrel with this combination before it can even launch one fighter. A particle beam in place of the torpedoes would probably be just as effective, though I've never tried it.(light bulb goes on) 😄

    • The reason you normally can only work for one government is because when you complete the deliver Rebel/Confed parcels, the other string becmes unavaidable. What you need to do is to get get the one of the cargo missions, but DON'T complete it. Then, accept the other governments cargo mission. Now you have acess to BOTH mission strings.

P.S in GS, the Particle beam is excellent, since the power reactor rapidly regenerates fuel (well, I tinker with it in Res-Edit so it does.). I have a Rebel Deestroyer with four proton turrets, eight triproton cannons (okay, I changed the maximum on that also ), a manta bay, a tractor beam, a cloaking device, a particle beam and all those little upgrades you get for doing the Cydonian mission string. I can now outgun a Cruiser 😄 (okay a cheated a little bit, but doesn't everybody :p?)

As you can see, I usually prefer weapons that don't run out of ammunition half-way through a battle, although when trying to dominate planets, missiles are essential (torpedoes are useless on fighters, they just miss, and killing them at a range prevents those fighters from eating away those sheilds too quickly).

    • Yeah, well, if you're tweaking in ResEdit, you might as well tweak the particle beam to take no fuel...and no, not everyone cheats. Sure, we might've done it before, but we learned, as you will eventually, that it just isn't quite as fun without the challenge.

But yes, I have to agree that secondaries just don't cut it sometimes. But I use them now because 1) I don't use the monty python tactic anymore, 2) it's more realistic, and 3) I'm figuring out ways to keep them useful. In dominating some outer Cofederate stellars, it's convenient to have 20-odd missiles and a few heavy rockets around to finish off a ship if it happens to slip out of primary range. And generally a takes a long while before I actually run out.

As far as secondaries go, I generally stick with two missile racks and one torpedo launcher. The torpedoes are helpful in chewing shields away, plus it keeps that realism factor in (I don't like making my ship a different ship, just with the same hull). And yes, they generally don't work with fighters, but when the fighter's on top of your ship, it works. It's fun to do with Defenders. And missiles are, well, missiles.

And don't forget about the javelin rocket -- it's arguably he best secondary weapon in the game. It's a powerful supplement to your guns, has a long range, and has enough impact to keep large groups of fighters at bay.

And most people don't realize how useful the heavy rocket is. It's a pretty nice weapon, providing you aim it right. Even considering weight, it does more damage than the torpedo.

I only cheated after I finished both the Rebel and Confed mission strings, gave fighting a little more appeal, but not much.

    • I amost always shun secondary weapons that do not have unlimited ammo, or take up too much space. What is there for me then, anyways? Why, the best secondary weapon in the game. Fighters! Some other good ones are space bombs, because of their massive power, and Javilins. I have never flown for the Confeds. I tried once, and was forced to defect. That was annoying. I don't like missles becuase it is very annoying, when, the enemy is about to die, suddnly you are out. Boom-boom time for you. Also, I always totally refit my ship because the origanal form is not always the best. Also, Mass Drivers rock! If you have a couple, just fly away from the bad guy, turn, fly back, and start shooting. A whole cloud of shots hit them, doing a LOT of damage. Try it!

Were you using Pale when you bought the mass drivers. In Pale they fire rapidly and they rock, without Pale they suck.

      No, really...

Yeah, secondarys were more useful in EVO if I remember correctly... Let's see, where were we? Oh yes.
That beam wastes way too much fuel to be effective for very long.If you are fighting a bunch of light fighters, fine. If you decide to go after a capital ship, the fuel might be best used elsewhere. Like an afterburner, maybe?

I never did like secondarys much... I geuss I was too cheap 😛
