Yes! I just remembered a realization I had a long time ago about weapon damage. I just decided to post this here, um, because I felt like it.

Yeah, but anyway, the EV BIble's wrong -- the formulas should be divided by 2, not 4. Which explains why a Lightning is disabled with three missiles, not four. Among other things -- like the reason a Patrol Ship has 0% shields after two missile hits.
