    • Corvette vs Kestrel vs Confed Frigate?

      I know most people think comparing a Corvette to a Kestrel is kind of dumb, but the Corvette does have its advantages, like Clipper-quality speed and its almost five times cheaper. And what about the Confed Frigate? I know it has a lot of firepower but it moves like a sloth. Thanks in advance 🙂

      Well, this all comes to down to preference. If your looking for quick attacks with good firepower and speed, you want the Corvette. If you want a warship with exceptional firepower, but fairly slow, get the Kestrel. If you want to have a ship with good sheilding and excellent firepower, and can stand a slow, slow ship, go with the frigate.

      Corvette. The other two are too slow, although it's a near thing with the Kestrel.

      Corvette is perfect for everything, from trashing Confed patrol fleets to bashing the alien invaders (hint, hint: Mac, finish that plugin! :p).

      Load 'er up with laser cannons and javelins, along with any other toys you like to take aboard, and you've got one of the most potent ships in the game.

      Well, the Kestrel is a very nicely upgradable ship. If you give it all the sheild regernerator and sheild up upgrades, plus stovk it up on lightnings, missles, torps, turrets, and lasers. All of it would fit in the nice 120 upgrade space they give you. If you have the money, that is.

      While I disagree that it is the best-looking ship in the game, I do like the fact that the Confederation is a very well-organized, and very aesthetically co-ordinated, group. However, I think that the Rebel ships contrasting sharply in look (other than color) further defines the "rag-tag" nature of the group: they have a ancient ship as their primary fighter craft, a modified freighter as their midrange, and a sleek ship for their cruiser (I like how the Rebel Cruiser is designed, with the ring for Mantas to dock).

      I think that if the Confederation, with it's billions in the bank, couldn't maintain a uniform look across their ships, they wouldn't inspire much confidence. It also reinforces the military attitude, which is good. If they were just silly looking ships, I don't think the Confederation would have many volunteers. 😉

      In my opinion, the confed frigate was too clunky. It looks good, but don't judge a book by it's cover. When I had a kestrel I could easily take out a Confed Frigate without using my fighters. You don't even have to have missiles, just dodge the enemy's fire j and use simple proton turrets on it. Blast it to blazes!

      You can take out damn near anythin with a shuttlecraft if you exploit the AI. I'm wondering why the Rebel Destroyer wasn't mentioned in that comparison list. It's a bit faster than a Confederate frigate and still outguns a stock Kestrel. If you're not counting that, then I'd go with a kestrel. The only thing I need is a high enough RCS to keep the AI from firing Torpedos at me. A Kestrel with an RCS upgrade fills that slot nicely. The most balanced speed/firepower combo would be the corvette: When you absolutely need to haul arse. Of course, a properly outfitted defender can take out a corvette and haul twice as much arse...

      To tell the truth, it doesn't really matter what you fly... it's how you fly with what you have.

      I didn't mention the Rebel Destroyer because it makes polls turn into b*tch-fights about if its the best ship in the game. Oh, and anyone who says the Confed Frigate is better than a Defender just aren't skilled enough to use a fast ship :p.

      Wrong there. Confed Frigate is definitely better than the Defender. The three main elements are speed (Maneuverability, perhaps even more), firepower, and protection, and generally you need at least two to have a viable ship. The Defender has only one, speed. Frigate has two, protection and firepower. It's not the most balanced ship out there, but much more so than the Defender.

      That's the big reason the Rebel Destroyer is the best (human) ship in the game: It has all three areas covered very well.

      And before you say I don't know how to fly ships with speed, let me point out that speed is generally the most important factor to me, and that I love the Azdara in EVO.

      I disagree. As it has been said in the past (distant past according to how its been since I was here), the confeds are ugly cos they got those tacky blue dots. Go with the real good looking one...the rebel cruiser. Or, since this is a poll, the corvette.

      Personally, I prefer the Rapier 🙂 It is a better combat ship than any of the above. With the right mods it can outrun missiles, outmaneuver mmost other ships. When you sell everything and fill it with torps you can easily eliminate any force that comes your way.

      I agree that the Rapier is a very good ship, I even conquered four planets with one (one confed, the rest independant). But if you just save up for a little longer, you can afford a Corvette which has almost the Manoeverability of a Rapier, and tons more sheilds and firepower.

      P.S. A great way to make some cash is to buy Industrial Goods (or metal, Iremember which) on Capella, sell them on Nemesis (I think, It's the one two jumps to the right of Capella). Then buy Luxury Goods at Nemesis and sell them at Capella. I know most people think trading is for people who are too scared to do bounty hunting or something similar, but after one hour of doing this trade run, I had enough cash to but a Kestrel. You can never get this amount of cash by raiding Argosies.

      Frigate, DUH!!! Corvette's fast but weak, Kestral looks good, but has no real advantages. The Frigate's the only one on the list that lives up to and beyond its name.

      The Corvette is, in my experience, the best overall ship, but the Kestrel and the Confederation frigate are quite good in certain, more specific, roles.
