    • 1st person?

The more i read about the game, the more interested i become. I have one last
question though. Is it first person? I was looking at some screenshots, and
i didn't see any cockpit screens. So, i'm wondering if it is 1st or 3rd person.
Also, if it is 1st person, what is the flight model like? Is it like I-War? Or
      Wing commander? Thanks again.

    • It's top down, third person. For future reference, you could easily have posted this in your other topic. Making many unnecessary topics is generally frowned upon.

    • There is, however, a game called Exobattle by Matt Burch, the same guy who wrote Escape Velocity, that is basically EV in a cockpit view.

It was never finished, and is very hard, but its still playable.

That is a very old site that I have not updated in years, but there is a link to Exobattle somewhere on there.

    • Of course, you could always download the game and see for yourself. Playing it is much more fun than just reading about it.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded

But, i don't have a mac. That's what i've been trying to decide. If the
game is good enough to justify buying a mac just for this game. Of course, i'm
sure there are a lot of good "mac only" games.

One more question on this topic. I'm trying to figure out how you control your ship.
Do you control it with a joystick? Or is it it more like Homeworld? In HW you
just point to a certain place on the screen, and your ship moves to that point?

You control your ship with the keyboard. The controls are adjustable, but by default, the up arrow is thrust, left and right are turning, down is reverse heading, spacebar is fire primary weapons, shift is fire secondary weapons, tab is select target, W is select secondary weapon, J is jump into hyperspace, and so on.

    • Thanks for all the info. I think i've made my decision to get this game. All
i have to do now is find a mac.

    • Ebay should have a few. You can play the game on a mac as low as an apple II, I believe

Uh, no, I think EV requires a bit more muscle than that. I think any Performa or Quadra should run it fine though, unless Apple made those lines longer ago than I'm thinking. If you want to run Nova on this machine too when it comes out, I suggest an iMac. You wouldn't need quite that much power, but it'd be easy to find one, and an iMac should run most stuff you're likely to want.

I first ran Escape Velocity on a 25 MHz Quadra 660av, and it was fast enough, although it took a long time to load. It slowed down when there were a large number of ships in the system, but I think that was more because of the 8 MB RAM. Anyway, a Power Mac running Mac OS 8 or higher is probably the best and cheapest bet for running all three EVs. I'm not sure where Jimbob is getting that Apple II, as Escape Velocity is a Mac OS-only program. Perhaps he's thinking of the Macintosh II?

    • Bah, I said I think! 😉 Anyway, I must've not been thinking when I posted that, now that I think about it.

It's rather like Asteroids, except that the screen scrolls to keep you in the centre, rather than you wrapping around the place. Left, right, thrust and some other buttons for selecting weapons, using them, hailing others, etc.

    • Exobattle is a good(ish) game, but does anybody know how I can code this game without knowing loads about coding in res-edit 😕?

      ------------------

    • That depends... Which game do you mean? Exobattle or EV? For EV you can use res edit or ben chess's editor. There are some other editors to, but if your serious about a plug...

Although now I read your post... Looks like your talking about something different...

For the record, you don't do coding for actual programs in ResEdit. That would be done in any simple text editor (I believe that Matt uses BBEdit for the actual code) and then load it into a compiler, which gives you the actual, usable program.

hmm.. if you are asking a question like this, then you probably should wait a whle before trying to tackle adding/mod'ing Exobattle. I'm fairly certain that it is written with a main stream language like C or C++, which requires much more knowledge then ResEdit abilities..
