Actually, the post with the flame was a guy defending me also. That thread was mostly cleaned out a while ago, but interestingly, a couple of posts were left behind. The choice to leave that post with the huge flame quoted has long intrigued me. The idiot who posted that was quite thoroughly denounced by at least three people before his post got nuked with most of the rest of it. I don't think the FAQs are moderated very much, just cleaned every now and then.

As for my seriousness, part of that is my debate instincts rising at places, and part of it is the "text on the screen" thing taking all the humanity out of my posts. In real life, I'm an insane nerd... I'm still a nerd here, of course, but some of the insanity is left behind.

JB- I think I already answered that, the ships just have to meet.

Moose - I don't see why it couldn't be used to bribe governments, but you'll have to get them to accept it. The map will be updated as often as I can.

Well, KK and Esponer have seen the light of reason. Guys, all of you have to quiet down about this impending alliance. Me and RC are working it out. Actually, comparing us with GH's Renegade Alliance is a pretty good comparison, Esponer. That's basically what we are: former pirate anarchists who now have an organized government.

/me also thinks of the Renegade Legion in Reign of Chaos, although they really are pirates... 😛

    • <Sigh...> Here goes:

      Quote

      ...Macavenger:
You're missing the point. Sure, you may know the Aliens, but do they know you? Not
      necessarily.

Don't be "thick," Mac. By the very same logic of us knowing them ... they know us. In II, when we studied HC computer files (I think it was when KK captured Yemuro) my fleet discovered -- and transmitted to the other pirates -- the existence of the HC's Alien hostilities and suggested we take advantage of the HC "distraction". Throughout EV -- and especially in II -- humans have marvelled at the "advanced" Alien tech. Of course such an advanced culture could do the same snooping with the HC systems they captured. This represents an obvious "plot possibility" for either the Pirates to attempt to contact Aliens or vica versa. The opening is big enough to fly that Dreden "Big Momma" ship through it! (Skyblade, please notice I finally got the right government with that last phrase.) 😄

      Quote

All the Aliens remember about the pirates is that there was a fleet involved at Levo, using somewhat different technology, which got its arse kicked by rebel council's fleet.

See above. (And "Ouch!" to that last shot.) :frown:

      Quote

How do they know that you are in fact a separate government? How would they have contacted you since then?

Also in II ... My fleet broadcast an unscrambled message to the Pirates about plans we found in a captured system's computer. (Our scrambler was broken.) Some pimply faced twelve year old on Barnard could have intercepted that comm!!! Is it not conceivable that such an "advanced culture" as the Aliens could have too???? OF COURSE IT IS! That single comm alone showed them the pirates were organized / opposed to the HC (and therefore, "potential" allies to the Aliens) / and (somewhat) successful against the HC. As for the "how contact?" part, seems to me there was plenty of "contact" in the Battle of Levo...! GEEZ!!! (Keep reading...)

      Quote

Why would they in the first place, when your first encounter was decidedly hostile...?

Again, there is plenty of "plot potential" here. Yes, they were "hostile" while they were blasting away in Levo. (I concede that the pirates may not have been perceived as being very ... powerful ... but we were still "hostile" at Levo.) The possiblity already has been demonstrated that the Aliens know we could be effective against the HC. What's to prevent Levo from having been a "first hand probing" of how good the Aliens thought the Pirates were? What they witnessed was WARRIORS, WITH THE HEARTS OF LIONS fighting the vastly superior numbers and technology of the HC (and Aliens). (Flashback to an Alien "hermit crab thingy" leader rubbing his tri-mandible (or whatever) thinking, "Hmmm. I wonder how those funny-looking human "Pirate" things would manage with somewhat better tech? If they're that good with such out-dated equipment, we should 'keep one of our eye-stalks' on them in the future. Just in case....") (Gosh! I'm really good at this. I should get involved in a webstory someplace....)

      Quote

...and they likely don't recognize you as a separate government?

      Already SMASHED that point...

      Quote

If you can satisfactorily answer those questions, I'll consider this more.

Done! Ta-da!!! "Game, Set and Match to KK" (Elvis Voice)Thank you very much.(/Elvis Voice)

Mac........... I was sit'n on the can last night (about 12ish) and this struck me:

In the official rules it says that the fleet can be broken apart inside a system but can one part of the fleet leave, leaving the other part in an inhabited system joining the planets defence fleet?

Also, mac or skyblade, can you sent (email) me the texture you used for the alien ships?

That rule is outdated, and needs to be revised. Splitting a fleet across multiple systems will be allowed, on a limited basis.

Done. Afraid it's a bit big, but I think you'll be able to handle it ok.

KK - Highly persuasive argument. If you can give me some idea how the Pirates and Aliens would be talking to each other now, separated by galaxies and all, I'll drop all objections. (I am thinking detail here... 😉 )

Also, we have good news for the map - It now works correctly in both IE and Netscape, in every version I've tried! Sadly, it seems OmniWeb and iCab don't like my new coding system, and they don't work as well as before, but everyone has either Netscape or IE, right? it also works with a couple fewer files (probably won't notice much difference in loading time, but maybe a bit), is more accurate, and will be easier to update in the future.
      /me w00ts 😄

I still can't fix the ugly green link boxes around all the fleets in Netscape, but at least they're in the right places.

    • I don't think I'll mind the Alliance between the two as long as they have some sort of realistic way of transmitting technology or information, and/or diplomats across the galaxies.

And Mac, about the deal, perhaps it should have an official time? Otherwise its a bit hard.

Now? Well, uh.... Since the story has not even started, I have no idea how the two sides could be talking to each other.

Just like since the story has not started yet, the Dreden has not made themselves known to the HC. And of course you and Skyblade being honorable men ... you have not already been talking / scheming.

As I indicated in my argument, all we seem to have is plot possibilities. It remains to be seen if those possibilities occur. (IMPERIOUS VOICE) And I better not see any more posts (Cadet, Cyber-Dragon, Asriel, Rebel Council) speculating about this hypothetically discussed "alliance"!(/IMPERIOUS VOICE)

      Where'd that voice come from????

    • AHHH! Mac, you screwed up the map! Before, all the fleets were hovering slightly above their designated places, now, they're all at the bottom. No wOOt! Change back! (I'm on Netscape 4.7, BTW)

RC, I'm free anytime tonight, up untill about 10:00. Then I have to do my DW. That's pretty much the same everyday, as I don;t get time to post untill about 6. Sometimes earlier, 3 at the least. And mornings are- well, lets not even go there.

It works ~perfectly~ for me on every version of Netscape 4.7 I've been able to find. Do you have the latest version (4.77)? If so, try reinstalling it perhaps?

Ok, try this. Go to Netscape's Preferences (Edit menu), scroll down and click on advanced, find the little box that says "Enable Style Sheets" and check it. Then try the page again. I bet it works better. 😉

Which ship did you want for your flagship again?
