Um... you always need some maneuverability, which the Fridge doesn't have.

One thing that all of you have missed is the fact that a Frigate is a lot bigger then a Kestrel on the screen, and therefore is easier to hit. The Kestrel is extremely thin, making it a harder target. Also, the Kestrel's lightningscould do serious damage to a Frigate by themselves. The when the Kestrel gets to gun range, boom, the Frigate is gone. Kestrels also have the advantage of not immediatly being fired on by Rebels even if you are a Decent Individual etc.
Anyways, my vote is clear, the kestrel.

I'm not sure comparing two Frigates to one Kestrel is entirely fair, despite the price difference... that doesn't really make much difference in AI vs. AI fights.

This whole thing about the prices is really ridiculous. Of course you would have to pay more for a Kestrel, because it's a ship that can be purchased by civilians. Frigates can be cheaper because a government wouldn't put extra cost in the Frigate, because they're not trying to make money, they're trying to make low cost warships. Lots of the money paid for a Kestrel goes into people's salaries, not to pay off the expenses of building the ship. All of a Frigate's cost goes to building the ship, because the government pays the people that builds them with government funds. So there!

There's no way I'm ever gonna be caught in a frigate, because they're useless. No wonder the feds keep losing; with a backbone like that, it needs to be consigned to a wheelchair forever.

But still the Kestral costs so much because the feds don't want it to fall in pirate hand cough so they put a huge tax on it, greatly inflating the cost. but since the frigate is a fed only ship, there is no tax, so that it costs ways less then the kestral

And as for your comment David... the fed frigate far from useless? Don't make me laugh. If I had the choice of starting the game with a shuttlecraft or a frigate, I'd take the shuttlecraft; at least I wouldn't have those far superior rebel destroyers (and cruisers) firing at me. I would never have one. Ever. Sorry David, but they're only one step up from space junk.
