    • MacAddict and Ev

Just got the new MacAddict. On page 26 150 shareware "gems" are featured. In the Best games section Ares is featured as a Must Have. EV is featured in the Worth a Try section which is quite a compliment considering it's age, a copy is also on the CD. What is even more interesting is there is no mention of EVO.

Not meaning to start a debate as it's been beaten to death, but I have always found EV to be more Mac like than EVO. The look and feel just fit better with the machine. I wonder if the editors of MacAddict feel the same?

    • Really? I read that issue a while ago (and threw it away so I'm not sure) but I thought it was EVO they mentioned, because I remember being mad that they had selected EVO as opposed to EV, but maybe I'm just insane.

NO, actually, it was the original. I was enfuriated that they ranked ares over EV though. For gosh sakes, it doesn't take half a brain to figure out which is more popular. The entire post count on all 6 ares boards combined (counting newswire and chronicles) is several thousand less than this one EV board. If you add up all the EV boards, we almost certainly have more than the rest of the ASW board system combined. Plus, Ares is $5 more! Usually MacAddict does a pretty good job reviewing, but they blew it there.

    • Yeah, ares was a good game, but no way did it measure up to EV. EVO, but not EV. I don't know if anything will ever beat EV, unless EVN exceeds my expectations.

Expect it to exceed your expectations then. Trust me. You don't read the Nova board much do you? 😉

    • No mention of EVO? Heh, maybe our friends at MacAddict know that Escape Velocity is the better game. 😉

Now they have to learn that it's better than Ares.

Tell me about it. Ares is a blast to play, but it certainly doesn't compare to the original Escape Velocity...

Agreed. We'll do it at one of the Boozerama's, since I lack real AK 47s. 😉 Onward, men! 😛

You'll have to help me here, I'm not up on my modern weaponry. What's an MP5? WWII Naval/Air weaponry, yes, very much so. 😉 Modern, no.

Now I'm more of a WWII historian myself, but everyone should know what an MP5 is. 😉

It's built by the German Heckler and Koch (the Heckler company was the same one which manufactured many of the old German World War II sub-machine guns) company, and is used by almost all special forces teams, including teams such as Delta Force. It's much more accurate and reliable than the Russian and Chinese-built AK-47, and uses the deadly 9mm peribellum round. You don't want to mess with this gun. 😉

Here's some small (url="http://"http://www.hecklerkoch-usa.com/Pages/sub.html")info(/url) on an MP5, along with a picture. This is the type used by special forces, and there are many different types...

    • The only reason that EV is better than Ares is that it has an indepth story line, a lot of weapons and upgrades and a massive amount of ships(civilian and or otherwise).

Ares has very strong points as well. You can stop the ship!! (I love that) Also having controll over the escourts wich we willt only see in EVN. The zoom features are exelent! Also the interaction with the planets is very welcoming.

Concidering EV's age I think it was a good call from MacAddict.

    • Yeah, controlling escorts should be awesome. As of now, you can tell them to stop doing whatever it is they're doing, or to do whatever they want. I saw in an EVN screenshot that you can tell your escorts to defend you. Like if you're a big fat freighter, they will hover over you and blow away attackers instead of abandoning you to attack them.

Macavenger, I'm afraid that it will take the same path as EVO. It will surely be better than EVO, but will it be able to measure up to ev? Is it going to have a lot new features and significantly improve gameplay, or will it just add a few things you hardly notice like EVO did? And, no, I don't read the nova board much.

RC, Ares is better in some respects, but there's no way it measures up to EV overall. I find EVs gameplay generally superior as well, and found zooming very annoying.

When I started playing the game I too was annoyed by the zoom, but once I got the hang of it it was very handy. The "to closest enemy" zoom is very cool.

Also I've forgot to mention the indepth scans which tell you about the weapos, target of the ship and over all power of the enemy ship.

Agreed. I actually liked the zoom feature of Ares ever since day one. It seemed to re-define space action from the old, fixed camera views we're all used to.
