I was speculating as to David's thoughts, asking him. IMO, the Rebels are mostly right, Confeds mostly wrong (if not totally evil), and the BII is definitely most evil.

    • Apparently, the one thing we agree on is that the BII is evil. 😉

      Agreed.

    • David Author ably covered the scenario issues, so I will skip them.

EV:O 1.0.2 graphics and sound are inferior to EV 1.0.5 graphics and sound. EV:O is marred by high-pitched screechy sounds like the phase cannon and UE blaze cannon. They gave me a headache. It is not so much that EV:O's graphics were ugly (the UE ships are awful), but that the graphics did not seem appropriate. The ship and station graphics would have looked good at a costume party. In the game, ships and stations had the out-of-context feel of bad clipart.

The EV:O Galaxy is badly structured. A ship that operates well in UE/Voinian space cannot function in Crescent space because you cannot buy ammunition. Crescent ships do not work well in UE space for the same reason. The player is forced to rely exclusively on primary weapons since he cannot count on being able to reload the secondaries. Some have claimed this is more "realistic" but it is not Fun having to strip and refit your ship for a trip across the galaxy. Especially as there are some missions that require you to fly between UE and Crescent space. The Miranu traders would/should have noticed the opportunity for profit...

Well said; EV ships are crisp, clean, sleek and glossy; EV:O ships are clunky, chunky, dithered and dull.

    • As I've said countless times before in the distant past, EV is a far superior game. Most of the points have already been posted, but the definitive one is this;
EV:O does not have a rebel destroyer.
And besides, in comparison to EV 1.0.5, it looks and sounds awful. It's like they made up the universe and the storylines, then just couldn't be bothered to make the ships look good, or the weapons sound good. And the crescent warship is a hopeless facsimile of the kestrel, the UE destroyer a copy of a rebel destroyer and so on. It's very unoriginal.
The storylines involving any race other than Zachit, UE or Emalghia is pants, boring and uninspiring to behold. The universe is far too spread out, so some of the crescent missions take forver to complete. And where's a corvette when you need one? I refuse to buy a Lazira because they look hideous, and none of the crescent ships pack any armour, which is stupid. And it's easy to win fights in the crescent; buy a UE ship of some sort, and then pick a fight, because all of the crescent weapons do little damage to armour, so when you get down to armour there's little that opponents can do. Anyway, that's what I think...
And lastly... you can't get a 'Which government is better post' going for EV:O because there isn't a definitive battle. Unfortunatly. Some of the Fed vs Rebel posts have been absolutely brilliant, involving Skyblade and a few others against David Arthur. That's just missing from EVO. Sadly.
Lets hope that EVN brings back the passion from the first game; I already want to be a passive informer for the rebels.

    • I agree with all the above posts about EV, but for me it was simply the combination of the original thrill of playing such a great game, the fact that the graphics in EVO were less "clean", too cazy and brillatly colored, and most of all the fact i could invent an identity for my pilot and stick to it, as opposed to acceptin evry/any mission like in EVo.

    • Personally, by the end of the game, I consider the true enemy to be the Aliens. My motivations by then are to be in a Rebel Cruiser and have a mixed escort of Confed and Rebel Capital ships

EV is better than EVO for all the reasons stated above.. the main reasons in my mind are:
-Graphics look more like a complete set in EV
-Plot leaves alot of open questions that makes you want to keep playing

    • I play EV more because the plugs I'm working on are for EV. But I'm really looking forward to when I get the time to convert them (along with the EV universe 😛 ) to EV:O. The engine is significantly better.

I haven't played EV:O in a couple years, so I don't really remember what I liked and didn't like about it. I think the EV graphics are overrated, though. They're too simple -- they're just a bunch of simple geometric solids with OK textures. Plug-ins like Magma really improve on the original graphics. And the plotline, while it does draw upon one of the archetypal conflicts in human society -- the underclass desires freedom while the upper class desires law and order, each being convinced of their own virtue -- is also rather derivative, and the basic idea has been done many times before, and often better.

That said, the game itself is a blast to play. It's just plain fun. I think a big part of that is the way it pokes fun/homages so many classic SF stories... Let's see my list. Ah... Dune, HGTG, LOTR, The Mote in God's Eye, THX-1138 and Star Wars, ST:TNG and DS9, classic bad B-movies like Manos: Hands of Fate ("My name is Torgo. I look after things while the Master is away."), Japanese monster movies, even a offhand reference to Marathon (another great game), and probably a few that I've missed. Little things like that keep you entertained while you're going through the tedious process of building up enough money to buy a ship with which to kick ass. There aren't enough of those in EV:O, as I recall, and I hope that EV:N will have at least some.

(edit)I just noticed one such homage has already been revealed: there's a Navy unit in EV:N called "Raczak's Roughnecks" -- a reference to RAH's Starship Troopers (The book is much better than the movie, in case you were wondering).

    • Agree with everything said so far. Here's my bit:

EVO just lacked class. The United Earth 'space hotdogs' and the Voinan triangle thingies were completely uninspired. Probably the tackiest thing about it, though, was the explanation for the naming of the Crescent race, offered by the manual - something to the effect of 'look at the galaxy map through one eye and place a fist over UE space, and you'll see a crescent shape.' Ugh. The outfit piccies were ugly too - take the octagonal prism rocket thingie for example...

I don't think anyone will try to say that EV's graphics and plot are really top-notch. That's what Nova is for. The point is, though, that they're better than EVO's, nad EVO, despite the better engine, doesn't have near enough of an improvement in gameplay to compensate. EV's graphics may be simplistic, but the default graphics in EVO are worse in most respects, and the sounds - especially in the Crescent - are uninspired and even downright annoying. Blaze Turrets and Phase fire drive me nuts after I've had to listen to much. EV's standard weapon sounds are probably the best out of EV, EVO, EV MAGMA, and EVO MAGMA. I'd take those sounds over any of the others any day. EV's story is also simple, but nice and complex under the surface, with a fair amount of depth. In EVO, none of the governments have any depth or feel to them, and there are so many different conflicts taht you can't get attached to any one of them. Though I do kinda like the Azdgari. 🙂
