Rapier!Rapier!Rapier!Rapier! They are better armed
and with the speed, accselaration, and turning upgrade
they are just as menuverable as the lightning.
Although it is fun to see the Defender with all of
those upgrades.

That's quite true, at least along the length (longest direction). Going the short way though, they are fairly fragile. It's too bad everyone notices this and neglects the way the curves give much strength to the long direction. I've heard that it's virtually impossible to crush an egg lengthwise in your hand, though I've never tested that since I don't handle eggs very often.

Anyway, I wouldn't fly a Defender with the speed upgrade. That's just too damn faast for the weapons that can go on it. Azdaras rock because they hold Swivel Phase Cannons, but for straight shooting stuff, 500 or higher is just way too fast.

Rapier.
The Rapier is better flown as a corvette than as a fighter. The shield+armor of a rapier is ~20 units more than for the Lightning. That extra bit of protection lets the rapier get upclose and personal with destroyer-class ships. Lesser fighters must do hit and run or monty python.
The rapier has much more weapon space than the lightning. Selling the torpedo system frees 30 tons. Swapping proton cannons for laser cannons gives yet more space (and more firepower). The rapier also has adequate cargo space, so you can still do most misn strings, or mass expand it for even more weapon space.
I sell either the rockets or torpedoes and buy missiles, armaplast, and shield booster. I will frequently refit the ship, switching between rockets and torps as needed. The cash loss on refitting is 0%-20% depending on where you do the refit (best done on very high tech worlds). Rocket and torpedo launchers are very cheap so the loss is insignificant.
IMO the clipper and scout should have been included in the poll as players use them as fighters. I actually prefer the Scout over the Rapier. It is good enough, and I can save the 1.2M for a Corvette.

Good point, I'll take a scout over any of these any day. Just as good if not better, and a lot cheaper. Though the Clipper does suck, at least for the price.

A 20 pound sledge will crush an egg, just like a torp shatters a defender.

What? Too fast? Never! :rolleyes: Ok, so I like to make things difficult for no reason.
But, if you try it for a week those rapiers will seem incredibly slow.
If you're adding scoutships to the poll I'll change my vote.
