I think the "great equalizers" for the Rebel Cruiser are: 1) It can unleash all its fighters nearly simultaneously and, 2) It unloasd bucketfuls of torpedos as soon as it spots a Confed ship.

These two tactics usually "tip the scales" in a dogfight.

The Rebel Cruiser's turn rate also gives it a decisive lead over the Confederation Cruiser. When you watch the two battle and make passes on each other, the Rebel Cruiser always turns around much faster, unleashing torpedoes and heavy rockets at a rate the Confed Cruiser can't handle. If it weren't for the Confed Cruiser's superb shields, the Rebels would have a leading edge in capital ships (even though they already do).

Just a few days ago, I watched a Rebel Cruiser and two Destroyers take on a Confederation Cruiser. It was really awesome...

Stock Rebel Cruiser has no torpedos, only Missiles, Rockets, Turrets and Mantas.

magicianeer, I disagree bulls are fast(not superfast) the Con cruiser IS like a cow, its hind legs(up close) are the only things you have to worry about and the flies(patrol ships)

I agree with the Kestrel-- it's rep is great-- a tough fighting ship that even comes with fighters! But it's not very good. My Rebel Cruiser USED to bo only ok, but now, it kicks nasty Caonfed butt!! With a couple of upgrades to the speed, accel, and turning, and a few bonus proton cannons and turrets, it'll kill just about anything.

Actually the Alien Cruiser is the most overrated ship. A defender could take it out jst by staying behind it where its beam weapon doesnt reach.

I think the kestrel is overrated. Its definately a really good ship, but i spent forever saving up for one, i got 6 million credits and a 2 million trade in, and then i beat the alien mission with my corvette for the rebels, and i just bought a cruiser, and ive taken over about 15 systems, in about a minute each. The corvette doesnt get much notice, but it actually is really good. I took down fed cruisers, frigates, kestrels(you name it) and i did the alien cruiser mission and that mission where you have to kill the 15 or whatever pirate kestrels, all in my corvette.I also think rockets, torpedos and missiles are overrated, they take up tons and tons of your space, and they arent that effective.(except agains fighters and "the great cow"). Decoy flares are another underrated add on, for 1 ton, you can stop 50 missiles, and Jav rockets are good too(999 rockets for 5 tons). just my bit.

I agree completely! The first time I played, all I wanted to do was get a Kestrel! Then I got it and- well, it was terrible. If you want to be a trader, then it's really cool, but it is not a good warship.

Yeah, I agree. But I reckon that it's not bad having 6 Kestrel escorts, each with a couple of lightning fighters, when you r in a Rebel Crusier and demanding tribute from a planet. But, then again, I'd rather have 6 Confed Crusiers as escorts. Why not?

Most overrated ship: The Rapier. I mean, lots of people on the boards love it, I think, but it just doesn't cut it. The AI Lightning is better in combat (compare enemy rapiers with lightnings and you know what I mean), it's not a trader and too expensive for what you get out of it so it'll always must be a 'second-buy'. I always use a Clipper or Courier to get enough cash to get to the Corvette, but the Rapier could be used, if you like aggressive- only play with a ship of 800000 creds. But it just doesn't pay off yet. I mean in it's Shipyard stats, it stays clumsy, has a bad arrangement of weapons, thus is in overall way overrated. Not that you couldn't change some of it with upgrades, and take more out of that ship, but still..

Those who like the rapier, love the corvette. The rapier is a smaller, more affordable corvette. It is the cheapest ship you can get that can really threaten destroyers and frigates. Lesser priced ships must patiently use monty python. If you play violently, and dont have the patience for monty, then the rapier is a must buy (if you are a maniac, you fly a lightning) The rapier as an escort ship is only useful if you are hunting big game like kestrels.

You cannot really appreciate the AI rapier until you get a cruiser. Then you discover what its bad arrangement of weapons can do first hand. The most frustrating thing is to have your Ship of Domination chased around a system by rapier torpedoes.

To tell the truth, I believe no ship is overrated. I can find a use for any ship, including ones like the defender, the hawk, and the executive transport. But heh, that's just my oppion.

I would have a hard time picking one ship as the most overrated. Maybe listing them will help.

Confed Cruiser
Confed Frigate
Confed Gunboat
Confed Patrol Ship
(according to shipyard notes, these are all the most awesome ships ever, in truth most of them totally suck.)
Kestrel
Clipper
Lightning

I think that's about all. I still can't pick one to be most overrated. Kestrel, Clipper, and Confed Cruiser are good ships, but cost way more than they're worth. The Frigate and Confed Fighters just suck.

As for the Lightning, I know there are some people here who use it(SilverDragon, I think?), and are very good with it, which I guess is due to their superior piloting skills. It makes a good shipboard fighter or escort, but as a player ship, it just doesn't cut it for most of us.
