    • I too hate the Kestrel. What a reediculous price, $10M. Go the Corvette, all the way! You might like to read this little story: Maskirovka vs. Atinoda: (url="http://"http://www.literatureclassics.com/showcreative.asp?IDNo=109")http://www.literatur...ve.asp?IDNo=109(/url)

    • I'd say the corvette. It is s***. I had my arse kicked by two pirate argosys, and i"m the one who'se taken over the galaxy, for god's sake. The damn thing is soooo expensive for a few little missile pods. I think the confeds would do well to have these as their standard patrol ships, though, because against the smaller ships, (the shuttle  ) it has a slightly higher chance. (That is a shuttle with one laser cannon and a layer of armaplast.)

Are you sure you did not mean to enter "Clipper"?

If you really meant to enter the 'Vette, then IMHO you did not properly outfit/upgrade your 'Vette. I believe the Corvette is one of the very best ships one can use in EV.

I think he must have done worse than outfit it wrong. Even with the standard weapons, I can easily take 2 Argosies, without even using any secondaries. With an upgraded 'Vette anything below government Cruiser is easy, and those can be dealt with, just take a little more work. And your opinion isn't so humble KK, most of us here really like the Corvette.

    • Overall, I would say that the most overrated ship is the clipper, mainly because I doubt it has enough shielding or armor to fight a larger ship like a 'vette, and it doesn't have quite enough room for extended dogfighting (I mean more than just a few missiles or torps to kill a rapier or two). Of course, that is probably just becuase I don't really know how to outfit/fly a clipper.

On the same type of subject, I would say that the corvette is slightly overrated. IMHO, the 'vette doesn't have enough primary weapons to suit my tastes. In addition, I cannot use secondary weapons very well, either. Instead I prefer to use a Kestrel, and the extra turret seems to make a large difference. I have not noticed that the decrease in speed hurts me too much, and the extra armor and shields has saved me many a time. However, I would like to know how the people that love the 'vette outfit and fly it. If you care to respond in favor of the 'vette, please tell me how you outfit your vessel, preferably in detail, rather than, "DUDE! VETTE KICKS!!! LIKE, YA KNOW, IT LIKE WASTES EVERYTHING! MY FORKLIFT COULD KILL YOU SOOOOO FAST! P.S. KESTREL LOOKS FUNNY LIKE!", I would prefer a response like, "I throw 2 proton turrets, the manouvering (sp?) upgrades, titanium, the four shield strength upgrades, the shield recharge upgrade, and as many torps as possible on my 'vette. I typically just primary anything smaller than a 'vette, possibly excluding rapiers, and use my torps with primaries for anything larger.", though variations are, of course, welcome :^) .

      Thank you for your time.

Depends on what mood I'm in...
For the basics, I sell the Heavy/Javelin Rockets and Launchers, leaving 93 tons of space. Then I get RCS, Thrust, Missile Jammer, IFF, Density Scanner, 2 Shield Capacitors, and a couple more Missiles. That leaves 85 tons, and I do this part every time. I also usually get I think a fuel pod and Armaplast, sometimes a Ram Scoop.
At this point, sometimes I get a Hawk Bay, Sometimes I go for Torpedoes, then fill the rest of my space with ammo. Depending on your preferences, getting a Mass Expansion for a bit more ammo room and/or upgrading the Turrets to Proton are also possible. I also get the Engine Upgraded with torpedoes sometimes but not with Hawks. It always seems disconcerting to me when my capital ship is outstripping might fighters. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope this helps you, the 'Vette is one of the best ships in the game if used right.

The Clipper is the ship that everyone wants to like. In it's description, we are told that it is a multipurpose ship that can be used as a courier or a light warship, the ultimate privateer vessel. In reality, it is neither. It is a poor courier when placed against the scoutship or the Courier, and as a warship it is too slow and poorly armed to do much real damage. Add to that the fact that it costs 400,000 credits and gives little room to expand, and you have a ship that really doesn't pass muster. You buy it expecting an Arada, but get, well, the Clipper.

As for the Corvette, I always sell the rocket launchers and the laser turrets, and buy two proton turrets and four laser cannons. A layer of durasteel is a must, plus the engine upgrades. The javelins stay or go depending on my mood. Same goes for the missile launchers. They're a good weapon, but I find I can fit a lot more upgrades without them.

    • The lightning.
Anyone who disagrees with me is messed up in the head.
It may be fast, but a destroyer with the manoeverabilty upgrades is better. Ditto for the corvette.
It might have a heavy rocket launcher, but so does the rapier, and the corvette.
It has missiles, but not nearly enough. The rapier's torp launcher and torps are much better for dogfights.
It has no shields and no armour. It is too weak.
And at just over a million, it's blimmin' expensive.
I never want to have to get into one of those in my life.

    • The Kestrel is the most overrated ship. Granted, it is nearly a must-buy in the game, but it is way overpriced. My major gripe with it is the weapons space it has, or lack thereof. By the time you bring its shields and armor up to par, there isn't enough space left of it to have adequate secondary weapons for a ship of its size. Capturing or buying a Destroyer or a Frigate not only saves you money but probably gets you a better ship for your cash. Bring the price down by about 3 million and add some more shields and the kesrtel would be wonderful, but at 10mi., it just isn't worth the effort.

The kestrel is overpriced, but 3 million is too low. I figure it is worth 5-6 million.
The kestrel shield/armor is deceptive. All you really need is the shield booster and durasteel, maybe armaplast as well. Whenever you fight a large ship, use the lightnings-- they are 50 points of your shields, and can be instantly regenerated.

No way the confed frigate is better than the kestrel either. The frigate is slower than the argosy, carries the same number of guns as the kestrel (6 fixed, 3 turrets). It has more space and shields, but speed kills.

Of course, the Rebel Destroyer Rewls over the Kestrel.

      ------------------

    • The Confed Patrol Ship is the most overrated. I mean, come on - it costs almost 4 times as much as a Manta, and the Manta is at least as good.

He meant lower the price by 3 million, which would make it about 7 mil.
I find that, on the rare occasion when I have a Kestrel, I don't need any armor upgrades. I upgrade the shields some and give most of the rest to weapons.
And of course, the Rebel Destroyer Rewls over everything. ๐Ÿ™‚

Heh, you could say about the same for the Confed Gunboat. Costs about as much as a Lightning, and is about a fourth as good. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • When I said 'bring the price down by about 3 million', I didn't mean that the Kestrel's cost should be brought down to 3mil. I meant that the cost should be reduced by 3mil, i.e. the Kestrel should cost about 7 million credits. Also, even though the Frigate is probably pound-for-pound worse than the Kestrel, in terms of getting the most for your money, the Frigate beats the Kestrel.

    • All the Confed ships and the Kestrel are all overrated, but the most overrated ship is the Confed cruiser. Slow, pathetic weapons, and it's "Fighters" are just armed suicide pods. I could take it out with a Rebel destroyer no problem.

All true, though taking it out with a Rebel Destroyer isn't much of a statement, since that holds true for every other ship in the game too. You can do some decent stuff upgrading it by selling the Neutron Blasters, but the weapons on the stock model are rather pathetic, it's true. And the speed and turning make me sick. The fighters are probably the best part of the package.

    • Alternatively, you could buy the speed and maneuvering upgrades, changing it from having all of the speed and maneuverability of an eighty year-old pig with foot-and-mouth disease to having all of the speed and maneuverability of a cow with foot-and-mouth disease. The only problem there is that you have to venture to Palshife or Evildrome to get the upgrades. Palshife is almost out of the question, because flying your big blue "shoot me" sign deep into rebel space would probably mean that a manta pilot would get lucky somewhere along the way. Evildrome would be easier to reach in your slow, hulking bullseye, but even so...

The cruiser does have some things in its defence though: 1) It has the most powerful weapons array of any ship you can get in the game w/o cheating; 2) It has a few fighters that, when intelligently used, can be used to good effect versus AI fighters, though the AI fighters will probably have left a gash in the cruiser's armor; and 3) The cruiser never pretends to be anything but slow, and given the AI in EV 1.05 or any other version, you should be able to take advantage of its strengths while minimizing its weaknessess (I.E. the enemies fly strait at you, so if they're still around by the first pass, then you know to hit the self destruct ๐Ÿ™‚ ).

    • Even with all the speed upgrades, the Cruiser still manuvers like a 60 year old pig, or maybe worse. There's no denying that it has the best weapons and shields, but for a ship that slow, 20 mil is too much. It's not so much misrepresented as it is overpriced.
