I always start with shuttle, scout, clipper.
After that, I may go for a rapier, or save for a corvette if money is coming in fast.
After the corvette, I fly anything I can get that is better, (rarely the kestrel, too expensive)
When playing a new plugin, I buy a freighter type ship instead of the clipper and play less aggressively.

What I don't get is why the Kestrel is almost five times as expensive as the Rebel Destroyer, yet the Destroyer is by far the better ship.

Yeah, I know of the cheap Kestrel mission.
I've only ever done it once, but I've seen it lots of times with Resedit and
EVEdit.

Well, if you want a gov't ship, you have to do the alien missions, and for that you need a Kestral, unless you can capture a Cruiser or something. Actually, I was in a 'Vette, but I had a little help from a piece of contruction equipment. cough cough FORKLIFT cough cough

I will prove the Alien mission can be done in a 'Vette -- with no Fork. I'll start a new pilot today. (Don't hold your breath. I don't have THAT MUCH free time....)
(KK was previously "psyched out" by all the posts claiming one must at least have the Kestrel for this mission. So that is what KK did. Only later did I see a post by someone saying he killed the Alien Cruiser in a Rapier. And -- knowing how easily the Kestrel did the job -- KK believes it.)

And I can do it in a Lightning.

My ship order seems a bit odd:
Shuttle--->for about a day.
Clipper--->for a long while
Kestrel---->Currently a great ship, but I want a cruiser. I like the mass turrets of the
Confed Cruiser. I'm half way through the Confed String missions, I think. Not that i'm a Confed player, its just that I'm banned from a majority of the rebel
territories. It all happened in my clipper days, when I pirated in different places looking for a home. I found the empty system galacticaly west of atropolis quite satisfactory. The particle beam is quite a interesting gadgit. (Right out of the range of Argosies)

I've always completed the Alien missions in a upgraded Kestrel, but always got a Rebel Destroyer and sometimes a cruiser once I finished the missions. It's nice that government vessels are so cheap...(Minus the Confederation Frigate and Cruiser).

Krestels Are okay, but do not mach the power of any gov. ship. While doing the gov. strings the Krestel is the best ship to have, before the Rebel Cruiser.

Oh, I just don't like flying around in a ship that's a something cruiser or a
something frigate.
I still use the Destroyer a lot, but the Kestrel is hard to resist.

I routinely beat the alien in a corvette. I tried it once in a rapier and was making progress, but gave up because it was taking too long.
I dont fly the kestrel because I rarely have the money for it, and by the time I get the money, I can buy better things.

Errrrr........ I finally captured a gov't ship, Confed Frigate, and it sucks. :frown: Even upgraded it doesn't have as much space as a Kestrel. Back to the drawing board. I'll try to catch a Reb Destroyer.
