    • Mine Layer

Okay, first off, if anybody wants to use this idea, go ahead, I am awful at graphics and this is just an idea. I've noticed that although there are lots of mines in the originals and plug-ins for EV/EVO nobody I know of has made a ship specifically for delivery of mines. The basic idea would be slow, about the speed of a transport, blocky design, about 1-3 turrets no long range weapons (except mines) and a LOT of mines. I don't think it would survive long in one on one combat against anything above a fighter but if you had a few large battles it could take out quite a lot of fighters with its mines (which could be escorts) πŸ™‚ There's my idea, do what you like to it.

      ------------------
      Destroyer of Worlds
      (or at least their ships)

    • If a player were to use this ship, it would be quite pointless, yet if the AI used it, it would also do nothing, since the weapon is invented. Mines are more of an all around weapon.

    • Not a bad idea.

However, I have yet to see an AI ship use mines. That is weapons with Guidance Type "5".

I've seen ships with work around weapons that are called mines but use different guidance systems. Galactic Scourge, I think, has one. And the plug I'm currently working on does.

Never seen actual mines used by the AI though.

      Anybody else?

    • I think a mine layer ship would be best if it were fast and maneuverable, but with little to no weapons other than mines.

    • Hmm.. the more that I think about this, the more I like it. I am almost tempted to head over to Res-Edit right now to make it. Must... resist... urge... πŸ™‚

i may attempt to use this idea in my up-coming plug-in....

    • A magnetic mine would be cool, one that slowly makes it's way toward the enemy, emphesis on "slowly".

    • It's been done... I think the space bombs in Empire 3 were guided, but slow. They were cool.

    • The Galactic Alliance plug-in. The Galactic Alliance use mine layers ships, and
      they are quite effective.

Darn those ships! Darn them to hell! πŸ™‚

Capt. Editor - I put that idea in Reign of Chaos, but all of a sudden RMA took it and
decided a couple of magnetic mines could hunt down a missile with hyperspace
      capabilities......... Oh dear........

    • That was oneof my ideas for a ship for my plug! i guess great minds really do think alike πŸ˜› lol.

Yes, but they're not really mines. You've got them set as unguided weapons (Guidance Type -1), not as true mines (Guidance Type 5). That's one of the "work arounds" that I mentioned in my earlier post. Set the way you have them, the AI will use them as you've described. I'm utilizing a similar method in the plug I'm currently working on.

My point is that the AI won't use true mines.

At least I've never been able to get computer-controlled ships to use them.

    • I guess that's why they are illegal in the games - the AI can't use them.

    • It would be cool if there was a misson where you had to get to a plante to save the people but the system would be littered with mines. So you would have to get through the maze without getting killed. I , if no one else, think its a cool idea!

Actually, that would be makeable with some creative shďp and oütf programming.

    • Are mines the same as space bombs?

Um? Why must a weapon be Guidance type 5 to be a "true" mine? Isn't a true mine something that blows up when another ship bumps it?

Yes, you could do that interesting idea of having disabled ships in a minefield... just make the mission's "auxships" be a custom ship that's immobile (via the engine speed being set to 0) and that fires a high-speed but extremely low-distance invisible turreted shot at the player. The shot would have immense damage potential and a huge blast radius... when fired, it would destroy the "mine" as well, thus simulating the mine blowing up. The only problem is that the player would be able to shoot the mines first... damn. Can anyone think of a workaround?

I say the best thing is to go with Guidance type -1 (unguided) with a speed of 0 and a lifespan of some huge integer. Maybe a big blast radius and proximity radius... and a big impact so the danger exists of being flung from one mine into another. But you still need a ship to lay them. An added bonus is that the firing ship could be immune to the blast via the appropriate flag.

Have an ultra-fast regen, but the blast does enough damage to destroy it at once.

    • Hm. I think I'll use those mine ships in an upcoming plug...

Yeah... but the weapons would still push the mine off course, and it wouldn't stop. And if you set the mass high enough that it's not an issue, it would take forever to blow up. Mines shouldn't flame for half an hour before exploding. πŸ™‚

But maybe that could be cool. The strategy in rescuing the ships would be to shoot the mines with enough firepower to knock them out of the way while not destroying the ships you're trying to board. Hmmm...
