    • Which Galaxy you preferred and why (EV or EVO)

Stop me if this one's been done before.
I'll start by saying that I thought that, when compared to EVC, the EVO races, planets, outfits and ships were a bit crass. Things like the fact that one race was called the 'Crescent' because the area of space they controlled was ... well ... shaped like a a crescent, really got to me. But, I never got too far into the EVO missions, and they may have been OK, so if someone has something to say about that I'd be interested to know...
By the way, I was kind of hoping for this to be more about expressing your opinions than voting and polling, so a few basic justifications/reasons behind each post would be great.

"...as we talked excitedly about shovels and precipitation..."

    • Actually, this is kind of a new take on the Classic v. Override thing. I'm pretty much in the same spot as you, Veillord: I didn't spend a lot of time on Override, and rather quickly returned to the universe of the Confeds and Rebels. But you have to admit that Override's galaxy is admirable for not settling for a simple blue v. red division. It's a more complex galaxy, if annoyingly spread out. And 'the Crescent' just sounds cool.

    • It's not that the species that inhabited that region was called the Crescent, it's just because it's how it was shaped. The inhabitants were the Zidagar, Igadzra, Adzgari, etc. It's similar to how some things are named here, such as Cape Horn and The Fertile Crescent.

    • Sorry, forge. I have only ever created 2 pilot files in EVO, as opposed to around 100 in EVC.

Well, PlanetPhil, it's nice to know that I wasn't the only person on Earth who didn't really appreciate the United Earth 'space hotdogs' and all that stuff. Nonetheless, I do see what you mean about the galaxies, races etc - I suppose all of those races and systems would have to interact and bear some relation to each other, leading to a more complex and hopefully more interesting galaxy (hmph).

Btw - do you actually think this thread will go anywhere?

"...as we talked excitedly about shovels and precipitation..."

    • Veillord, PlanetPhil, knotch up another mark for EVC! I never realy got into EVO either. If truth be known, I found it a little enoyingly hard. EVC was just that little bit simpler, and because of this, it just sucked me in. It was as easy or as difficult is you made it. I also prefered the graphics in EVC. The design of the ships in EVO seamed just a little orcward compaired with the simplcity of the ships in its predecesor.

      Ho hum...

    • I liked EVO more because EVO had way more system, more governments, more ships, more missions, and you can kill Andrew welch :D.

    • I like Escape Velocity more because I knew my way around a lot better. It was really better than EVO. EVO had to much systems and planets. To hard to remember your way around the Galaxy. Well that was my opinion. EV forever man.

      ------------------

    • I have to say that EV was always (in my opinion) a better game than EVO, because I found that it was a game that you could really get into, and it didn't feel like all the ships and outfits were cheap and tacky. EVO was a different story. Yes, I know you can get plug-ins that change all this, but I only have a performa 630 - I can't run any big plug-ins in EVO.
The universe in EVO was large, granted. Huge even. But it wasn't great. It was too expansive, and it just wasn't fun travelling around. In the end, I just made my own plug in EV-edit and brought over a couple of rebel ships from EV (destroyer and cruiser) and went around the galaxy looking for a good fight. I never found one.
A load of the races were stupid, you never felt that you were really fighting for a cause. In EV, you were either a rebel, a fed, or a privateer of one sort or another (I was a rebel) and you stuck to that cause. In EVO, I never felt attached to anyone, not UE, not the Zidagar, not the Voinians or the Emalghia. It got boring. For some reason, the idea of not finding other civilisations really worked. In theory, EV should have worked. In theory, communism works. But in practice, just like communism, EVO fell flat on it's face.
Until EV3, the original is still the best.

      ------------------

    • The EV galaxy had more subtle humor- the galactic news things, for example, and plenty of references to "Star Wars (i.e. a huge, conquering empire, a man named lucas, etc, etc.)

I ask you to look both ways- for the road to the atom leads through the stars, and the road to the stars leads through the atom.

    • Well, I've felt attached to certain governments in EVO. I like both games and EVO is a bit better for me because it has a (little) improved engine, more missions, more systems, more of everything. I also know that it's quite hard for someone with a performa 630 to play EVO, so the opinion of those ppl will be greatly in favor of EV.

    • I liked EVO better, in both the categories of scenario and engine. The Override scenario was much larger and I really like the use of vis-bits in it. The 1.0.2 engine is great, IMHO. I occasionally go back and play the original EV, but not very often.

    • Well... i've always loved EV. EVO just is too vast. Yes, i am playing EVO and trying to beat it because i already beat EV. EV is just smaller, you can fall in love with the galexy, there are only two main powers, you can take a side, they both like you in the begining. Well, those are my reasons. Not too long, but i just like ev. me and my mac-retarded (he likes pc's) friend are making a story and a plug called te Republic. it basically has the Republic (the rebels after they conquered more systems) destroying the confed's ass. eventually there will be a mission where you help the republic take earth, but i'm just writing the plot right now. Tasuki is being tourtured. BTW, that's where my sig came from... sept it's not republic yet... yet!

I agree, at some times, Override's size can get annoying -- especially when you have to haul cargo across the galaxy.

At the beginning of EVO, there are only two big powers (the UE and the Voinian Empire), you can take a side, and, at the beginning, they do both like you (the Voinians don't hate you until you take the first 'UE Shipping' mission).

    • EV and EVO are both great games. However, I like EV better. EV's smaller size allows you to get more familiar with the galaxy. I agree with everyone who has posted, saying that EVO is too big. The fact that there was not much of a plot was also kinda bad about EVO. I mean, EV's plot wasn't exactly long and epic (aliens attack, mankind bands together, gets corrupt, people start rebellion) but EVO's plot was not interesting at all (Voinians attacked mankind, mankind fought back). In addition to that, there are the 3 strands, who are warring for no apparent reason. The planets in EV were more interesting, both in terms of looks and in terms of descriptions and bars.

    • Both games are great, believe me I know. But Escape Velocity has that certain magic to it. It's much easier to write plugs for and stuff. You know the history, have the knowledge of characters such as Admrials Davies and Skye, and with this knowledge can be shaped into potential stories by authors. Don't get me wrong. I mean stories like the Omega Conspiracy are great, but the EV galaxy can be forged into something great becuase of its more realistic feel. That's what has produced great plugs like Pale, Empire Trilogy, EVGE, and Eye of Orion. (although Turner's Frozen Heart does have a great hint of how the future has.) With this knowledge we have forged great things.

To be or not to be...Good question, what's the answer.

    • I don't think EVO's galaxy was too big/complex, it was just spread out - there's a lot of uninhabited systems compared to EVC. Even though it's got more ships, they're spread more thinly over the galaxy and you only ever see certain types in certain systems, so the galaxy seems simpler. If EVO had more ship types it would rule, as it is I say the games are equal.

    • I don't think so. The EVO universe may be big, but it's not THAT bad. The EV universe is just a bit too small. Now how about a universe kinda in the middle....

    • That's it... maybe an intermediate step between the 2, with a galaxy more like Override's size, but not as large. Also it would preferably be EVC in any other respects... hey, this sounds a lot like the EVGE... lets all shut up and go play that plug! 😄
