Hmmm, some of you do seem to be rather into the Lethe-Cydonian
conflict. For all the time I've been playing EV I have never
really taken much notice of their little war. But, one day I just
happened to be in a mood for writing and I wrote a story based
on the Lethe-Cydonian conflict.
(I know the names are terrible but I've never been good at it)
Basically I had the idea that both New Cydonia and Lethe Prime had suffered
in the Great War with the Aliens. Both planets had been bombed and occuppied
by the Alien forces. On Cydonia various resistance movements hampered the Aliens
progress and when the Confederation was formed they were easily pushed out of Aries.
But, Cydonia was left with a large contingent of patriotic exremeists who believed
in military rule as a way of making New Cydonia powerful. But after the war some
of the members of the former government who had survived the occupation had set up
a democratic system of government which encouraged close relations with its agricultural
neighbor, Lethe Prime (this explains the treaty which allowed New Cydonia access to its water). In my story New Cydonia is lead by a Planetary President who came to power through democratic election, her name was Vilora Cotez, a firm supporter of democracy and who was
very popular with the people but hated by the extremeists who opposed the democratic rule
in the name of a tougher leadership.
The story on Lethe Prime was quite different. It was also occupied by the Aliens during
which time its government was overthrown and nearly all of its members were executed.
When the Aliens were finally gone a government was hurriedly ushered into office and a two party system was established. But the party which came to power was the Letean Beaurecratic Party and as its name states it was just that. It was led by Rezan Bicor a greedy and corrupt polititian who rigged elections to keep him in office and the Lethean Democratic Union out. The people absolutely hated him and were dismayed as to how he stayed in power. It was then that one man used this to his own advantage. Bicor allowed a thrid party to be created, which was known as the Lethean Nationalist Party led by an extreme patriot, Marvorn Radivka. The people rallied behind him and his "Lethe from planet to nation" stance
and soon the Nationalist Party grew. Now Bicor was in trouble as the people began to threaten him with a possible revolution as Radivka's party grew beyond Bicor's control. Bicor resigned and fled the planet, as he feared the bloodshed, and soon Radivka had total control as a near-dictator. He soon had almost complete following and worked the Lethe
into an agressively nationalistic planet. So when Vilor Cotez of New Cydonia critisied his near-autoratic rule he accussed her of being a weak leader.
This soon escalated into an idealogical conflict. Soon New Cydonia was hit by severe
drought and was forced to import more water from Lethe Prime. When Radivka refused
to help the Cydonians the extremeists on New Cydonia soon began illegally stealing water
from Lethe Prime. When the Letheans and Radivka found out they declared Vilora Cotez responsible and declared war. The Cydonians had no choice but to defend their homeworld and
neither did the Letheans as they feared a campaign of terror from Radivka if they did not
do as he asked. Therefore the Lethe-Cydonian conflict is not the fault of either the Letheans or Cydonians themselves but the Cydonian extremeists and the autoratic Marvorn Radivka!
(Phew!)
As you can tell this is just my absurd idea of the origin of the conflict!
